We have just seen that the inability to successfully play the game at the AFL level is no barrier to being a successful coach.

Mini was a decent player

Had a ripper 09 as a small forward

Was very good in 08 as a tagger

If that's a swipe at Mini then that's a bit harsh ..... btw both Liam Baker and Jack Graham have now indicated their preference to get to West Coast

Loved at St Kilda and Richmond

Rapt for McQ, great result for both coach and club

Tom Haffey, Alistair Clarkson, Alan Jeans were far from champion players, but all have claims of greatness in the coaching rank.

Then there is Leigh Matthew’s as player and coaching royalty.

Congratulations Mini!

Good luck Mini - you’ll need it here in the West.

listening to ABC Radio this morning & on 2 different programs they are asking listeners to ring in their opinion on McQualter as the new Eagles coach. Majority don’t like the appointment. Parochial lot here - only want an ex-eagle as their coach - their hearts were shattered when Dean Cox didn’t want the job.

I’m conflicted - I want Mini to succeed- but I don’t want Eagles winning games - their supporters are insufferable 😩

I can't remember where I read it, but there is a theory in soccer that defenders make the best coaches because they are always watching the game unfold in front of them and (and this part might be more relevant in McQualter's case) they tend to be less physically or technically gifted than the forwards they play on so they need to read and understand the game better to compete.

You obviously need other qualities like good leadership, and obviously you can be physically gifted and have a high footy IQ (that might be what separates the really good players from the all time greats), but just an interesting thing to think about.

He was a small forward.

Yeah, I was trying to give the whole theory for context, and the part after (and this part might be more relevant in McQualter's case) was where I tried to relate it to McQualter. His position is less relevant and more the point that he might not have been the most gifted player, but he had to make up for that deficiency by trying to play smarter, and this might set him up to be a good coach.

He didn't do much at the Tigers when he took over. But good luck Mini (just not too much of it against the Saints).

I think he's an underwhelming appointment. There's not much out there.

Thant's very condescending, you know very well there is no experienced successful coaches who have made themselves available.

Seems like a risky proposition as WCE are just spitting out coaches lately…
Wouldn’t be my first choice if I was trying to make it as a career coach. I wonder if Mini accepts this and figures it may be an opportunity he may not otherwise get. Either he succeeds and makes a name for himself or I bet if RTB is around, that’s the safety net

How does anyone know whether it’s a good appointment or not?!

He could turn out to be Allen Jeans or Damien Drum

Well done Mini.

Sounds/reads like the critics are lining up before you've even started your new job.

The list changes for 2025 have begun, always an interesting time for an avid supporter.

He did extremely well as caretaker coach.

When he took over, Richmond had only 3 wins and they'd lost 6. Mini won the the next 5 out of 7 to put them in contention for a shot at finals...

Cotchin and a few others retired before the season finished.

I think the club was obviously focused on the future and prioritised their youth so I'm not sure the people in charge wanted the team to finish 8th or 9th that year.

I think he’s a smart coach and I was wishing we’d get him.

Very underwhelmed by Yze notwithstanding the tough position he has landed.

Will no doubt score his first win with the Weagles against us next year.
