Re: Battle
Can't wait for the Free Agency period to come and go, then Battle will be irrelevant and we can all move on.
How can a failed forward be worth $900k per season, the AFL are being reamed by player managers.
Once multiple clubs get burnt by these expensive long term deals, maybe the some sensible balance will return.

Will we pick up a player in the SSP window

You initially said they are now level. You rate them equally. I disagreed. I still disagree.
They're not rated equally by opposition clubs or our coaches (with votes for Steele in AFLCA being more than double that of Battle in 2024). There's already evidence for you...but you just conveniently ignore that to stick to your flawed opinion.
Josh Battle is not rated equally by those that matter. It'll be confirmed at The Trevor Barker Medal. I won't bring Brownlow votes into it because you'll claim the umpires only vote for midfielders.
How many coaches votes did Dunstan get the year Ratten dumped him?

Re: Battle
Is that what we’re using as a measuring stick?
After a hot start the votes from round 7 were 20 for Steele and 15.5 for Battle, by a group I’m saying undervalues him, and just again shows Steele dropping off from a few years ago and as the season went along.

Re: Battle
That could be a suggestion you could put forward for the FootyWire website to allow extra filters.the votes from round 7
Next time anyone wants to compare 2 players they could choose that period. I think it could work

We will now have about half a premiership backline. Hawthorn will have a complete premiership backline with the addition of Battle.

Jared Crouch, Ben Matthews, Lewis Roberts-Thompson, Craig Bolton, Tadhg Kennelly and Leo Barry - 2005 Premiership team
And
Rhyce Shaw, Ted Richards, Martin Mattner
Alex Johnson Heath Grundy Nick Smith - 2012 Premiership team
I think Wilkie, Howard, NWM, and Sinclair are better. They have the capabilities. We're not far off
Ari Shoenmaker to take Battle's spot and we also need a lock down defender with a good left foot to take Webster's spot.
Anything's possible as long as we have a gun midfield

Re: Battle
That's harsh Bob.
Firstly, 'failed' is far too strong a term, IMHO.
Secondly, in today's footballing market, I reckon that you would be very much "worth $900K per season".
It's Dave, man. Will you open up? I got the stuff with me! -------Who?

Battle didn't poll as well in other awards but at least Ross Lyon agrees with you

Re: Battle
Announcement today.
I was told last night by an AFL club official (not Saints) that we have been awarded #8.
Hope he is correct

Lets hope so If that is the case and this is a deep draft do we go to Richmond and offer one of the early picks for there 21-29 as they will get more picks anyway that would give us 7or 8,21,24,29,43 not bad.

Re: Battle
In the just posted Saints TV interview with President Bassett the Pres said Josh was seduced by Hawthorn and maintained he was staying right to the last minute.
Seduced is an interesting descriptor. Keeping mum on his leaving probably explains him not attending the B&F, would probably have made for serious awkwardness.
President is a far better interviewee than Jake an interviewer (seemed nervous/awestruck).

Re: Battle
No need for the drive by comment on Jake.
I thought his interview was excellent. Asked a bunch of the right questions, and got answers I wanted to hear about. Having listened to plenty of his stuff, and met him, that is his natural cadence of talk.

I agree with Yorkeys. I couldn't watch it. Seemed too much like an awestruck supporter. The 5 minutes I watched didn't captivate me. I tried reading the transcript at the same time to get some insights but that didn't work. Good luck to the young guy. I prefer his YouTube updates on players.

NOT a fact.
in my opinion, he performed admirably

Re: Battle
Fair enough.
My weak defence is that Jake often asks for feedback: he and Saints TV are otherwise excellent and much appreciated.
I just wondered if some of the cringeworthy stuff might make Mr Bassett think twice in the future. It was a coup getting him on and I am confident I couldn't do better. Mea culpa.

Re: Battle
I’ve only watch half the interview, but from what I’ve seen so far, I thought it was quite good.
Interesting comment from Bassett regarding the previous mindset of the club - that success is cyclical and as long as we don’t piss people off, our time will come.
A perspective that really seemed to resonate with the previous “cuddle culture” administration.
