Re: 8 more years of Max King
How many other long term marquee deals have needed to be accompanied with so many ‘ifs’, ‘whens’ and ‘maybes’ to be justified?
I think King can be good, but he could easily go the other way too. I think the ‘Winx’ that we were sold is also off the table. And I don’t put this all on him, I think his type of player isn’t utilised well in Ross’s game style.

Re: 8 more years of Max King
If we are going to continue to play collapse-back football, which is the main plank of Lyon's defensive game plan, then King needs to be played higher up the ground and needs to move around a lot more, the same way Roo used to play. Under Lyon, Kosi could play in the ruck at least.
King needs to reinvent himself a bit, methinks; he’s too one dimensional and easy to defend against.

Re: 8 more years of Max King
Sometime soon an AFL club will find themselves in a bind when these long term deals start to hurt, I don't care if it's the Saints that cop it, simply because history says they are shite at simple decision making .
Will we pick up a player in the SSP window

Re: 8 more years of Max King
Yesterday in the prelim Daniher played an integral role after Oscar McInerney went off the ground in the first quarter.
Rhys Stanley had crazy-high ruck 'tap out' numbers but it didn't translate to Geelong getting the advantage in the centre ...or around the ground.
There's no way Brisbane fight back in the second half without someone as experienced at ruck work as Joe. Looking at clearance numbers, you'd have to say that he did a great job nullifying most contests.
We have a bloke the height of a ruckman, and Ross Lyon and match committee refuse to use King as our second ruck. The crazy thing is that it is probably going to benefit his game as a forward.
Max needs to be more physical to shake off those pesky defenders. It's not going to happen by accident. Lethal Leigh's idea in June was to put King in the ruck to 'force feed' physicality into his game.

Re: 8 more years of Max King
I dont know about Leigh Mathew's suggestion.
He'd be risking popping shoulders every second week in the ruck (even pinch hitting).
I'd rather we try him at CHB, where he'd be "forced" into the game by the urgency to defend.
We'll need someone tall in the backline, around CHB.
Hopefully Membrey continues next year ... the chemistry and efficiency up forward improved when there was no "static" King to focus on.
This way, King might fulfill a need down back with Battle missing.
(Wouldn't it be better if he added something down back for us, rather than risk taking away from our improved efficiency up forward)?

Re: 8 more years of Max King
Genuine question, as I've never played in the ruck.
Why would Max K having a bit of a gallop in the ruck lead to him "popping shoulders every second week" any more so than him playing in the forward line?
And, if he really is that likely to re-do a shoulder, then no way should we be offering him a mega deal! A straight swap for Harley Reid before the competition catches on, more like.

You can get injured anytime in any position or even at training
Can’t hide in AFL footy, can’t be in cotton wool
It’s a ballistic game - injuries happen!
You are not unlucky if you get injured- you’re lucky if you don’t

Re: 8 more years of Max King
Oscar McInerney dislocated his shoulder trying to lay a tackle. It didn't look like a lot of weight or stress was placed on the joint like you see when a player lands awkwardly with their arm out stretched.
Most probably the joint wasn't stable due to the ligaments being stretched or already having a partial tear.
Maybe he copped front on contact just prior to it initially popping out or maybe a marking contest or the ruck contests may have caused instability.
That's all courtesy of Dr. Google

Re: 8 more years of Max King
Max would probably be in another 10 contests playing in the ruck, that's all, on top of the main thing he'll be doing (playing as a key position forward, etc..).
He"s injury prone as it is.
I have a feeling that he could star at CHB and I'd rather he'd be tried there (and I'll say/argue anything to make that happen).

Re: 8 more years of Max King
IF, Hawthorn offered Battle $900k (IF that is correct) what would a club like PA who are a couple of key forwards away from a premiership offer King in free agency?
Imagine Sydney grabbing King, as their key forwards are serviceable, compete hard but are not A grade.
Pretty fair defensive move if we believe Max will become the player he can be.

Re: 8 more years of Max King
How much would Battle be worth if he was a 40-50 goal forward?
I'm sure he could have managed that as a forward ... I mean Membrey at 188cms managed to do that, didn't he?
I dont think Battle would have been worth $900k as a forward.
The point is, Battle's best position is CHB ... that's why he commanded the $900K. He is elite in that position.
We are kicking as many goals with or without King at FF/CHF.
Maybe, as with Battle, his best position and where we can get the most out of him and thereby benefit our team the most could be CHB?
Isn't it worth a try? He might prove to be elite, too, in that position.
I'd rather do that than look to trade him off, as others have suggested.

Re: 8 more years of Max King
Battle is not elite in that position
He is good
McGovern, Stewart, Sicily are elite in that position
AAs and B&Fs
Battle will finish 6/7th in our B&F and we finished 10th
