Grand Final 2024
Based on what I saw in week 1, I’m tipping a Sydney vs Brisbane GF this year?
I think Hawks make it to a prelim and get knocked off by Sydney…and (obviously) I think Brisbane beat GWS next week and then they roll the Cats who usually don’t have answers against teams that pile on the pressure.
Who’s your tip for the two teams who progress to make it to the Grand Final?

Re: Grand Final 2024
Cats and Hawks.
No team is in better form than the Hawks atm. They'll take of Port easily this week. Sydney did very little to be fearful of and with no key fwds they aren't much chop. Very lucky to be in a prelim.
Brisbane very flakey. GWS and Cats very even. Cats by virtue that they have a home final and a weeks rest. Brisbane to lose this week.

Re: Grand Final 2024
What do you call Hayward, Heeney and Papley? They may not be tall forwards, but they're certainly key to the Swans forward line success.
Jeremy Cameron plays like a midfielder or half forward. He doesn't take big pack marks or contested marks. If you combine Geelong's goals against Port...just from Miers, Stengle and Mannagh, it's double or more of their talls. The strength of Geelong's forward line lies with their smalls, just like it does with the Swans.
Don't underestimate McDonald and Amartey. They both contribute. If they don't clunk big marks, at least they don't get out marked and they bring the ball to ground to provide opportunities for the Swans forwards.
Even McLean plays his role well. He's had a very good year.
The Swans have class players. At their best, Heeney, Papley, Chad Warner and Errol Gulden are stars of the competition.
They went up a gear when they had to and if there were any doubts in people's minds about whether they were worthy, those doubts were eliminated with that final quarter.
We will see how Hawthorn goes up against the Swans... away from the MCG

Well said, scollop.
High impact forwards don't come in extra-large sizes only.
The ball spends more time on the ground in the finals ... you need classy ground-level players or even a team full of B and C grade hard-nosed, hard-running players all over the ground, playing as if they're all midfielders, as the Hawks are currently showing us.

Re: Grand Final 2024
The Saints beat Geelong and Sydney, so they're no good- Hawks and GWS only just beat us, but PA beat us twice and Bris flogged us-so I'll go with Lions v PA as the PA didn't turn up for the Geelong game last week, but will this week.

Re: Grand Final 2024
Very few if any teams win flags with no decent KP forwards. And in my opinion that's exactly what the Swans have, two duds as their key position fwds. McDonald in particular is a very average player at this point of his career. McLean can be useful. Agreed that their mid and small fwds are top class. Warner, Heeney and Papley, and Gulden are great players. I also reckon Grundy is one of the most overhyped players in the comp. Doesn't take marks around the ground and the game moves too quickly for him. Only adequate in the ruck. They fell over the line against GWS and they can't rely on that. Cats also have Neale who took 9 marks in their first final. Cameron has kicked 62 goals this year, more than any other Cats player. You can twist stats any way you like, but Cameron was integral to them winning in 2022 and will be again if they are to advance.Scollop wrote: ↑Tue 10 Sep 2024 2:13amWhat do you call Hayward, Heeney and Papley? Just haven't rated the Swans for awhile now. They fell in with dodgy umpiring against Collingwood and haven't been anything like their first half of the year form imo.
Look at previous premiers. Miochek (average key fwd but better than those two) Hawkins and Cameron, Ben Brown and Fritsch were important in their flag, Riewoldt and Lynch for Tigers and Riewoldt alone in 17. Kennedy and Darling in 18. It's about having the ability to relieve pressure around the ground as much as it is taking screamers in front of goal. I don't believe that the Swans have that and if they make the GF I definitely can't see them winning it.

I know it’s David King and people will have their pre determined biases because they don’t like him. But it’s a factor not just I’m talking about. Just by coincidence ( maybe those Facebook algorithms…) it popped up in my newsfeed

Re: Grand Final 2024
BUMP
Amartey, McDonald and McLean kicked 6 goals ...could have possibly had 8 goals on the board.
All three missed set shots.
That's more Swans goals scored by their talls ...rather than the smalls. Their mids and half back flanker (Lloyd) also contributing with majors.
People will probably say that Port are crap, and their tall defenders (apart from Aliir) are hopeless, but I think the Swans talls have.proven a lot of people wrong
Swans now one step away from the premiership.

Re: Grand Final 2024
Swans 8.0 from set shots at half time. Most from outside 30. Hard to lose with that level of accuracy.

Re: Grand Final 2024
Well I'm glad it's not going to be Hawks, dislike the lot. Glad it's not Port, dislike all their mids and supporters. Glad it's not Bne, dislike Rayner, Zorko, Cameron. And Hawkins won't be playing and we beat both grand finalists. So Emerald City v Sleepy Hollow. Fagin's future? Statue to either Longmire or Scott. Darling Harbour or Spirit of Tassie terminal ?

Inside 50's are equal.
Brisbane controlled the footy and had more contested possessions but couldn't capitalise.
Brisbane had 14 inside 50 entries in the first q for 3 goals. Geelong had 14 i50's in the second quarter for 7 goals.
Brisbane's decision making and errors gifting the Cats easy goals. Answorth punched the ball back into the corridor from a high kick from the Cats mids and Cameron got a soda. Miers and Henry totally arsy because of turnovers up the ground

Zorko gifts another goal to Cats
Too many turnovers in dangerous spots on the ground making Geelong look good

AFL umpires don’t even try to hide their agenda.
Geelong destroyed by some of the worst decisions you’ll see.

I didn't really give a s*** who won. I would rather watch F1 practice or the ODI against those pommie asswipes.

Re: Grand Final 2024
Yeah... you're right. The umpire smothered the ball in the middle - not Daniher. The umpire kicked it forward to Cameron - not Answorth.
The ump was composed and kicked it to Cal Ah Chee. And the ump kicked the goal for Ah Chee
The ump made Stanley miss from 10m out.
The ump also kicked the winner - not Cam Rayner

The free kick against Stewart in the first was nothing short of embarrassing.
The HTB against Holmes.
The non mark to Guthrie
The dangerous tackle on Danger
All baffling in fact embarrassing calls all gave Brisbane goals.
