Yes...I know they've been missing for large parts of the year, but other squads have had the same problems.

If we beat Carlton we'll be above them on the ladder
Interesting take, I reckon Melbourne’s midfield this season was close to the worse on paper of any side. Oliver was ranked in the bottom 5% of mids this season on AFL x ratings (flawed system I know but he ranked worse player on the ground 6 times this year), Viney is nothing more than a solid plodder (think prime Seb Ross type), trac missed quite a few games and their best mid Trent rivers is still learning his craft. May and lever had injury troubles through the year and the dees forward line is worse than ours. I thought Goodwin overachieved this season. Melbourne will now be a bottom 4 side for at least the next 3 years.
Uhhhhmmm... Hello......

You are talking about stars who have been awarded multiple All Australian jackets in Gawn, Oliver and Petracca...and all of a sudden they are the 'worse on paper'

I don't think so. You don't lose your talent or abilities overnight. People were saying Nick Riewoldt was washed up late in his career and he won his 5th All Australian jacket five years after winning his 4th.

I understand if people have reservations about them for next year, but after we played them in round 10... Melbourne were sitting pretty at 7 wins, 3 losses.
Not doubting those three are champions but Oliver is completely cooked and won’t be that player ever again. Petracca only played 13 games and Gawn also had injury troubles and is 32 with dodgy knees. Plus all that crap that went on in the off season. I think winning 11 games isn’t a bad effort all things considered.

I also think they have worse list proposition of anyone currently going into next season. With Neal-bullen and Pickett also potentially on the way out.

They couldn't possibly lose to brown and gold. Worst colour combination in history!

A lot of the coaches mentioned in this chain have coached an awful lot of wins.

Port have to travel every second week, and regularly finish in the top four at the end of H&A seasons.

Melbourne have been a regular finalist since 2018 and won a Grand Final by over 12 goals.

Plenty of worse coaches than those two.

I reckon Bevo is a ripping coach as well. The Dogs are just unlucky to have copped the form team in week 1 of the finals. Two grand finals in eight years, a drought breaking premiership and plenty of other finals appearances. I'd take that.

Yes, but because his name is Voss he (by the way of the media) won't get the blowtorch on him like others

I note that the 3 players who used to be given god-like status in the game (Buckley, Voss, Hird) will be seen as unsuccessful coaches

Buckley - 206 games coached for one Grand Final appearance
Hird - 1 losing final coached and brought the game and his Club into disrepute
Voss - failed at Brisbane, has not improved Carlton since last year, and won't improve them next year either

Still, carry on!

Voss stuffed up big time. On selection, on the sub and on general play. Effing glad he is not the Saints coach.

Few coaches under clouds:
Voss, Bevo, Clarkson. Yze, Hinkley, Goodwin, BScott, possibly Longmuir. Understandable that contenders are not rushing for the Eagles gig, several vacancies opening in 2025.

Wouldn’t surprise me if the Power bounce back this week. Lot of talent in that team that would be quite shamed by the performance.

Reckon Rozee will come out breathing fire.

Hinkley
Had a long time, decent lists, no flag

Beveridge
Has the best list in it, can’t get it done

Bad coaches .. The Melbourne bloke, Goodwin. The Essendon Scott brother (Brad?)has no idea, I reckon Alister Clarkson has lost the plot, and Hardwick isn't far behind.

Michael Voss was just terrible on the weekend, at selection and on game day, Carlton deserved to be humiliated with that appalling lack of judgement.

And I hate to admit it, but the other Scott brother at Geelong might be the best coach. His players are very well drilled and disciplined, and Scott has a good knack to get the best out his players. Look at Rhys Stanley as an example, at St Kilda we all pointed out his deficiencies, yet Scott has the ability to exploit his abilities and mask his weakness, ultimately helping him to a +200 game career and with more premiership medallions than Nick Riewoldt.

I'll take that bet, he often starts on the bench.

Isn’t a bad coach just a coach with a bad team?

Alistair Clarkson and Damien Hardwick are exactly the same

Just without the champions

Same with Ross

Slightly off point: is it faulty perception or are most AFL coaches getting noticeably tubby, like Ratts was?
The trim ones seem scarce, Chris Scott, jockey-like McRea, others? Goodwin?
Might be a function of sponsor dinners and or age but I think fitness staff have a job to do keeping the bosses match fit, some stairs to the boxes look steep.

A coach is only as good as their team.
Richo - and I'm going to be controversial now - at least knew how to develop players, as in get the best/most out of them (if only as individuals, getting the best out of themselves).

Not all players are going to reach A grade ... it's about getting the most out of them. Finding their ceiling.

Very underrated and not credited for his development, IMHO.

Based on the last month, available talent, significant leads blowing, and stakes involved, then I nominate Adam Kingsley. If he and his team can come back from such a disastrous fortnight, well that will be an excellent coaching effort. Where to start picking up the pieces. That Daniel guy who gave the opposition 11 points in a minute when it was desperate is going to need special care to regain confidence?

But he’s run his race imo
