Re: Four delisted
I agree with the Bonner delisting.
It hopefully means the club will allow our 2 x AA HBF to remain playing where he plays his best football.
The other thing is that that HBF role is the best position to let young guys get a quarter here and there to just get their hands on the football.
It is a particularly good training position for a young outside mid and Bonner was just taking a spot both in the Senior squad and at Sandy.

Re: Four delisted
I coud be way off track unable to attend training etc but it looked like RL wanted to really know this year whether there is a chance for Bonner and in his view the answer seems to be NO. I'm sure the coaching staff knew we were unlikely to make finals, never loan win the flag.shrodes wrote: ↑Tue 27 Aug 2024 7:16pm From the club: https://www.saints.com.au/news/1640958/ ... st-changes
Really perplexing that they put so many games into Bonner this year
The others are not really a surprise to me personally. Big opportunity to grasp the fulltime ruck role next year for Keeler and Heath if they stay on

Re: Four delisted
The delisting of Allison & Van Es to me indicates poor recruitment & or medical conditioning.
Allison drafted at mid 20's? & Van Es at pick 31.
As a club (recruitment, medical, development) we simply have to do more with these picks in this range.
Other than just recently (Owens, Windhager) our record of developing players in this range over the years has been quite ordinary

Logan Austin too. Which Port half back who can't defend will we take and play for a season before delisting this year?D.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Tue 27 Aug 2024 9:22pm No surprise with the first 4.
Agree it is perplexing to play Bonner so regularly then delist him. Similar to another PA backman Leinert.

Tom Campbell article from July this year.
Great clubman, well respected.
Who knows, we may still rookie him again for next season.

Not offered a new contract. So I presume he can look elsewhere if he wishes. I really like him but his disposal was not really good enough sometimes.

Re: Four delisted
Unfortunately for Seb, his position was taken by Windhager as a midfield tagger, he was going to find it difficult to break back into the side.
He has been a great servant of the club and hopefully will get a gig elsewhere like Nth Melbourne, Richmond or Gold Coast.

Hastie is the effing obvious answer to anyone with a tad of football knowledge .Vortex wrote: ↑Tue 27 Aug 2024 7:45pmIf we accept Lyon is being 100% honest when he repeatedly states he picks teams to win games then I look at the Bonner experiment as an illustration of two things, firstly the depth of proven talent available for recruitment is getting thinner every season, Tasmania will further dilute the talent pool. Playing him for several games this season has thwarted the development of another young player with promise. Dare I say he even cost the team in some of the close games.
This aspect of Lyon's thinking with Bonner continually getting a game I just don't understand at all and makes no sense whatsoever.
With that in mind, as well as acknowledging Lyon's game plan probes for fast ball movement off the back half, I'd suggest Bonner was seen as a stop gap and was also considered better than any other option on the list most weeks to fill that role in his pursuit to try and win every game rather than just throw random kids into the game who couldn't play that specific role just for the sake of "getting games into kids" who neither are ready for AFL and/or can play the role
Question is, who will he his replacement, do the recruiters already have someone they think can play the role better or has Lyon identified that player internally?

Geez you jumped of the Bonner bandwagon pretty quickly Curly.
Back in May he was a key part of our future.
Note: you still never miss a chance to bag Byrnes!

= chances to make it
Problem was he couldnt fully execute and over commited too often causing a need for difficult disposals and he didnt have the skill to execute those precise actions.

Re: Four delisted
Bonner's short kicks were accurate. The rest resulted in a lot of turnovers. Unfortunately, he cost us the game against Essendon by having a record 17 turnovers by foot. That is an AFL record he'll keep for a very long time. At least he'll get to keep his name in the history books
He was wasn't very effective in one on one contests, either.
Still, he had some good games and he squeezed out another 19 games after being delisted by Port and got to play his 100th game, so he can be proud to reach that milestone

Re: Four delisted
He played a very good game for us against Carlton and has shown good signs of improvement.
You know it's possible for players to improve once they've played around 50 games. Some improve markedly between 50-80 and some even further after 80 games. Ronnie is on 63
Saying he 'hopefully' plays majority in the VFL totally ignores reality and is a sh*t comment to make, to try and say "I was right".
Your views on Bonner changed, so perhaps try and remain open to the possibility that Byrnes continues to perform to a good standard in the seniors
