There's a game teams are playing with the salary cap, by increasing the price on free agents. Most of the time it's a bluff, create cap pressure to help future trade situations. And if they nab someone, all the better.

Sydney is the master of it.

A guy on FB says the CEO spoke to supporters a few hrs ago and the feeling was that Battle will prob leave- he was saying it's gonna drag on till start of trade time.

See, this is why I say King is a liability.
He's got too much $$ (more than he's worth) which leaves less money for Battle.
It doesn't help that Hill is on such a huge wage

WTF?

This makes no sense.

1. We could offer Battle 6 yrs at $2 per season or, 6 yrs at $2M per season. He’s a FA and can leave to play for whomever he wants for whatever he wants to be paid. We’re irrelevant.

2. Hill’s contract in 2025 and beyond is much reduced from his current contract.

Hill 'WAS' on a huge wage. The salary Hill will be earning from 2025 onwards won't affect our ability to retain Battle or attract Free Agents.

I reckon his contract extension just announced, is significantly less money per annum for the first 2 years, and probably half of what he's currently getting for the 3rd year.

I expect they believe he has 2 good years left in him and he will be paid more as an assistant coach in his 3rd year, rather than for his output on field. This makes sense because the soft cap is where clubs are struggling to stay within the limits set by the AFL.

*Edit. I see SaintMatt just posted the same re Hill

Got any numbers on King and Hills current contracts? Or just throwing out rubbish?

King hasn't signed his big free agency contract, and last I heard that could be something like $10m over 9 years. Average $1.1m per year is good but not budget breaking for a key player.

Hill was on good money when he signed 4 seasons ago, but those contracts are always structured to be heavily front loaded, so he should be on reasonable money now.

Battle was offered a good deal, I believe something like $800-850k per season average which would be great money for a teams third best defender. If the Hawks value him at $900-950k (maybe because he would be their number 2 defender) then that is great luck for him.

If he is really being offered $900K per year then it should be "Thanks Josh we wish you all the best."
He is a good player but is certainly not irreplaceable.
He plays the same role as Wilkie but not as well and we already have a couple of young guys coming through who may be able to play that role.
It just does not justify making him one of our highest paid players.

Wouldn’t Schoenmaker just play that role?

Caminiti will have to play that role next year, because Schoenmaker is two years away from being ready to play CHB.

So if Battle is worth 900k per season for 6 years, what should Wilkie’s manager be asking for?
All those demanding we match/beat unrealistic offers from opposition clubs need to understand the ramifications of caving into these management created blackmail situations.
Josh Battle is not worth 900k per season from us
He’s been great for us this season but he’s not the equivalent of Steven May or the other top CHB around the league
Hawthorn are desperate for a CHB
Collingwood may also come looking
We cannot afford to pay well overs to keep him because of the list ramifications
If we do there will be posters moaning about being unable to keep other players or attract big names because we’re overpaying Battle.

By that same logic, if King is worth $1M+ a season, there should be about a dozen player managers asking questions of the club.

Agree

Battle is at most a 700k player

Never been on the podium in the B&F
Never been in the AA squad

Has had a good year, but really at 193/92 is an undersized key defender
If he was 196+ 95kg+ like Harris Andrews
He would be a 900k player

There is discussion that 6 yrs rather than five years
May lead to a pick after our first

apparently age contract length also taken into consideration

Contract length no longer a criteria when assessing free agency compensation for clubs.

Laura Kaned changed the rules a few weeks ago to make sure Norf wasn’t impacted.

Do you seriously believe that.

Skunk is about 187 cm but can always outmark a lot of taller guys due to better judgement.

That is only after the 5th year. Only the first 5 years will count for compo calculation

OK so assuming Hawthorn front load Battle, which is likely.. then his 6th year would be not very much and his average for the first 5 would be higher?
e.g. if his contract is averaged at 850 per year over 6 years, but when front loaded he only gets 600 in the final year. Then the first 5 years he gets 900 per year.

So does that the figure they use of they only count 5 years??

acually the info is here:
https://www.afl.com.au/news/1185310/lon ... ants-compo

So Battle still will get the maximum allowed extra points for contract length,... to add to the average guaranteed wage
He is also young dfor free agency at 25 so should get points for that?
So it must be very close

But we know there is the St Kilda tax...laughable if McKay gets pick 3 then a year later Battle gets pick 25

Don't we have a war chest?

Didn't we offer Weitering $1.3m a year ? (for Battles spot)

Key position players don't come along easily.

From what I can see we only have Arie coming through and Webster's only got a year or two left.

How the f*** do North Melbourne get pick 3 for a dud like Ben McKay! It smacks of corruption. Get rid of Laura Kane. She has no f****** idea what as she's doing. I'm sick of this crap.
