Is Owens our new Hamill?

Having just watched the replay of the game on Saturday night, I couldn't help noticing how hard Mitchito crashed the packs in our forward line. He was a menacing presence against the pussies all night, but two efforts in particular, at critical stages of the last quarter stood out.

Both of these lead to crucial goals, one to Cooper Sharman and one to Jack Higgins. It reminded me of Aaron Hamill in his heyday. Although Mitchito didn't get a huge amount of the ball, he did snag a couple of goals and certainly made his presence felt. It was a typical, "Hamill-like" performance.

This is what an "enforcer" looks like in the modern game. One whose aggression and attack on the ball makes the opposition tentative, while staying within the rules.

As long as he keeps his actions legal, he can continue to wreak havoc on opposition defences and midfields. I note he started at the center bounce from the start, standing Dangerfield.

He is another piece of the puzzle, as RTB has stated he sees Michito mainly as a forward, with occasional CBAs and spells in the midfield.

His physical attack on the ball has never been questioned. He now has the physique to match. Another leader in development. His efforts on Saturday night were inspirational, effective and entertaining!

At 191 cm and 91 kg Michito Owens is going to become a powerhouse utlity class player capable of playing pretty well anywhere on the ground, has the same physical profile as Nathan Fyfe and has natural aggression to win contests.

It was reported in the last pre-season that he came back to training ripped and raring to go, having spent the summer working on his body and endurance.

He is 7 cm taller than Hamill and a much better mark, really strong hands!

Next year he will start his 4th season and aged just 21 is destined to become exactly the sort of attack weapon the team needs to make finals.

The 2021 draft that gave St Kilda Wanganeen Milera, Owens and Windhager has to be up there with the best ever for the club since the introduction of the draft in 1986.

Mitch has better hands than Hamill? If there's one area Sammy has him covered it's in the marking stakes. Sammy had very strong hands.

One of the areas I'd like to see Mitch improve in is sticking his marks more often. He gets his hands on the ball in contests quite often, without completing the mark. Kicking for goal as well needs work, but Mitch has time on his side to improve in both areas.

The last three drafts have seen us do well. The 2021 draft was the one draft we were dealt some luck. Covid kept Mitch and Windy out of the spotlight in their draft year enabling us to pick up two beauties in the 30s and 40s range. I can't imagine they'd go as low if the same draft was held today.

In the meantime, go "Sammy" Owens!

Gotta love the way Owens is developing, but personally I'd rather not use him in the ruck. Some of those big, bad opposition rucks are boarderline thugs and will deliberately use their knees to maim an opponent.

Owens is too valuable to risk injury, we need to find an alternate 2nd ruck.

If Mitch becomes as good a player as Hamill it will go a long way to us climbing the ladder. He definitely has a bullicking game style.

He also laid a heavy tackle on Henry which resulted in a goal to Butler, then kicked a goal of his own, meaning he had a hand in 4 consecutive goals in the final term.

Not a bad call. He's taller and more agile than Hamill but it certainly seems that he's playing as the super physical third forward who provides fierce defensive pressure, which was Hamill's trademark. Similar wonky set shot too
