Who is the worst coach in the AFL

Post: # 2071618Post Scollop »

Only current Coaches qualify

My number 1 is Simon Goodwin

In 2018 they made a prelim and then for 2 years in a row they missed finals. In 2019 they finished 17th. In 2020 they nearly sacked him...but that's when they decided to bring in Mark (Choco) Williams

They won the flag in spite of the fact that he was coaching in 2021. Choco Williams was the driver of that premiership

When Melbourne destroyed The Bulldogs in that Grand Final, many commentators were calling this the beginning of another Golden era for the Melbourne FC.

This year, even without Angus Brayshaw they're now looking at missing the finals again. He's failed dismally considering the talent he had at his disposal. I know they've had injuries, but who doesn't?

Their style of play, his team selection, his game plan and game day coaching have baffled their own supporter base

Yze
Mccrae - lucked in, now has no clue. Once injuries hit, luck normalised, Daicos tagged and teams worked out their system not so good. Enjoy his most recent pressers though, actually born to be an evangelical minister. Pies supporters would be a natural congregation base.
Fagin - wealth of talent, greatly under achieved, I am not deceived by 7 wins in a row. I stubbornly believe its masking the choke factor. Sooner or later.
Schofield - not eligible due to full sleeve tattoo and anyone can be flogged by a Ross trained side.

It's looking very much like Melbourne will only have one Covid Cup to show for this current list build.

And as as we know the Covid Cup Melbourne won was not only in a season that was significantly compromised but also the Bulldogs preparation during GF week was significantly impacted making their preparation significantly harder, unequal and unfair leading into the GF, virtually gifting the GF victory to Melbourne.

One of the most insane events in mankind's history that whole Covid period, big asterisk next to 2020 and 2021 flags.

I dont know what the temperature is like with SA supporters, but I believe both Adelaide & Port have seriously under acheived this year.

BUMP

Could turn out that the Bulldogs go deep in finals. All their best players are coming into red hot form

Same with Port Adelaide who I think have one of the most talented lists in the AFL.

The team sitting on top of the ladder (for the time being) has definitely one of the most talented as well…but Longmire has done a damn good job of stuffing up their form.

Why would you thrash a Ferrari when you're already 2 laps in front with 8 laps to go? This Port thrashing could make some of his players doubt themselves. Trying to play your stars every single week to help them win individual awards has backfired. You can’t flick the switch and get your form back in September.

A few here will recall me repeating this same message about our 2009 lead in to finals. We weren’t peaking at the right time of the year. It could have been better handled.

This below is what I sent to my mate who barracks for Sydney that weekend that we beat them

I think Horse is a d**khead. He needs to forcefully rest a few players. Heeney and Gulden and Chad probably want match payments and they want to win awards like the Coaches association and best and fairests and the Brownlow of course…But for f**** sake. This is a team game. He needs to bring in VFL players over the next 4 weeks. There’s no point being out of form. Gulden only had 1 disposal last quarter. I would rest him next week and if Heeney doesn’t get suspended, I’d rest Warner as well. Papley and Blakey need a week off as well. Just don’t play them. Keep them hungry. Keep them keen. Reinforce strategy leading up to finals. Reinforce making personal sacrifices now for the sake of the team to have hot form in August

How do you judge a coach?!

Win/loss?

Style of play?

Inconsistent performances?

Premiership success??

Interested to know?!

And how would we actually know?!

Ask the media, they reckon they know.
The hacks go after at least one coach every year, that's them telling us who they think
is the worst coach in the AFL.

The list changes for 2025 have begun, always an interesting time for an avid supporter.

Pointless post from you. Why do you bother joining in on discussions if you can't come up with an original idea 😭😭😂

It's all about the obvious. Fagan, Kingsley, and Sam Mitchell seem to be getting the best out of their available talent.

Hinkley, and Beveridge were underperforming based on their lists. Now they're back on track

Now it looks like Longmire has derailed the Swans form and confidence. Sort of similar to St Kilda in 2009. We were the best team in home and away by a mile and we struggled for form leading in to the finals

If the original idea is pointless, why bother? BM listed some of the issues, and you have provided further examples.

Beveridge at one stage could have been the worst coach, Hinkley more recently (not now), McRea during a slump, now it's Longmire, or is it? Yze? No, rebuild, or maybe not? Clarkson, previously one the best coaches, now the worst? Pointless.
Could be any of them, any week.

You choose.

It changes and is evolving for some and it could be justification for opinions already made on others

Like this opinion...
Fagin - wealth of talent, greatly under achieved, I am not deceived by 7 wins in a row. I stubbornly believe its masking the choke factor. Sooner or later.

Saw Adam on AFL360. He's refreshing. He doesn't talk bs. Doesn't give standard cliche answers to questions but most importantly...He's a bloody good coach.*

Kingsley is currently getting the best out of players that were struggling at their previous clubs. He's had to deal with major injuries to star players for extended periods. He's also got a very young list.

As far as average age of their players (list profile) is concerned, they started the year with the 6th youngest list. And as far as games played is concerned GWS are the 14th most experienced.

Our average age is 2 positions higher. We started the year with the 8th youngest list and we sit in 11th spot for games played experience.

Yup.......AND!

Most importantly he's got free access to a boundless supply of elite talent due to his club being owned by the AFL.

Just a small point.

Imagine having to work with a midfield of Greene, Coniglio, Kelly, Ward, Callaghan with Whitfield , Toby Greene, Aish, Daniel Cummings etc

I know right, without Kingsley stumbling into the joint only 18 months ago, that bunch would be nowhere...

Kingers is looking like he can coach at the level, but I know Lyon envies the he'll out of his list and the endless supply of AFL gifts in the draft he will be afforded along the way.

This season on results, Yze and Lyon are the under-performers, as both teams have gone backwards. Like it or not, if we have player issues, as history shows, it will be the coach who gets moved on and not the players.

Melbourne? Collingwood?

Something Tiges and us have in common are injuries to the key forward and to serious playmakers eg Dusty and Crouch/Henry.

My guess is it will be players that get moved on and Ross will see out his 4 year commitment.

I also guess the president has no time for plenty that played Sunday and will make that clear to the list managers. Possibly even the baby in the bath water is in jeopardy after that non effort.

One of the reasons Melbourne killed the Dogs was because they arrived fresh in Perth a day earlier, wheras I think the Dogs were moved from an Adelaide Hotel and dumbped in Perth within hours of the match from my memory, the details are a bit hazy now but the disparity was glaring to me at the time. There were other anomolies as well but it just goes to show that simply calling the 'best' coach' is too narrow a parameter to me when other anomolies are so expansive. Each coach has different circumstances and different teams and etc. I think one could roughly define the best coach for any specific skill.

Melbourne and Collingwood can point to their recent premiership trophies, we can't. Rather have a lull after a premiership than a lull after an almost there but not quite etc. Lyon was supposedly brought in as Bassat amongst other things was sick of blowout losses- he has egg on his face with this crap$y season served up to us.
