Sub Rule……..

Post: # 2072495Post saintbob »

Is a disgrace and the sooner the AFL gets rid of it the better.
Poor old Garcia sat on the bench all day and I know it would have been harsh to bring someone off as they were all pretty good but surely someone out there would’ve been a bit sore.
The fact that players across the league have spent the whole match on the bench in their debut games is a slight on the game.

Let them have 5 on the bench and reduce the number of interchanges per game to 40.

Garcia sat on the bench all game, because no one needed to come off, and the game was completely in our control.
We also had the luxury knowing if he wasn’t used, he could get a full game the next day at Sandy, which he did.

Agree.
Hugo seems mentally strong enough though to cope.

It’s a fkn joke

The Sub rule was vanquished once - and they brought it back

And what’s worse

We have debuted 3 players as Sub this year - s*** house

Scott Pendlebury was on SEN this morning rubbishing the Sub and said image having to debut as Sub!!!

Unless you play in a GF it’s the most significant game of your career - and you spend 3 quarters and change sitting on the pine!!! Knowing you’ve got 20 minutes to get a kick!

Collard was thrown to the wolves. His debut ended up being a nightmare

I'm sure Garcia would have come on if Sandy has already played or the game was in any doubt. They probably felt it was better for him to have a full game at Sandy than a quarter at Marvel.

It's no different to the holdover emergency that they have most weeks except Garcia actually got to play a game.

I’d like to believe that the people in charge at our Club knew what they were doing and deliberately did not make a substitution so that Garcia could play the following day for Sandringham

A sub has played both days previously

I think it was Hastie who played a quarter in the AFL
And played the next day in the VFL

I don't see what is so bad about it.
It's still a game in the seniors.
The rule allows for a change up for the side if used tactically (like Crows did against us)
Or it's there as a back up in case of injuries early.

We generally use our sub poorly.
Collard for instance was a poor choice.

If clubs played them, like they do in soccer, where an older player who has slowed down a bit, but still has some moves (think Gascoyne) I think it would be better.
From memory when it was first introduced, Footscray used to use the sub on an older, almost retired player who was almost specialist sub (Giansiricusa?) , and he would provide a real impact after 3Q time

I wonder if without the sub we would be game to play a debutante as often as we did given they have to play out the whole game.

Maybe we'd be more reluctant to, and rather use the sub on an older player with more endurance who can last the entirety

(FWIW I also hate having debutantes as subs)

Aside from the farce that is playing debutants as sub, I'm more than comfortable (Thanks Laura) with the way subs are used.

If they persist with the sub rule make it more flexible if a player is a tactual sub and the player coming off is not injured then if there is a injury after to a player on the filed, the subbed player should be able to come back in and go into rotations it would make sense and the coaches might be more tactical and use it earlier.

It is really dangerous when a player is injured and the club has to make a decision to go with 1 less or put the player back on it doesn't make sense when you have a fit player that has been subbed out but carnt come back on.

The AFL made the sub a tactical sub so show some flexibility with it or get rid of it and have 5 on interchange.
