Re: Mids
They do as they're told
Restrict, harrass, bump, push, and block
Pity all those things involve focus on your opponent rather than focusing on the pill
Today we didn't back our mids to take them on. We started well and our intensity was quite good, but Port had 31 inside 50's in the first half. We had only 20. You're not going to win games of footy like that
Ross refuses to let our boys play.

Re: Mids
Not an easy fix
No mid FAs want to come
We can draft mids but they are going to take time ... a lot of time to develop and match it with more mature mid set ups
Quite a depressing situation we are in
That said there are a number of teams with already decent established mid fields that aren't or won't get the job done to take them to a Premiership ... and they will soon need to rebuild as well
Our younger players are showing promise so we need to keep adding to this group and fingers crossed we soon start to pass other teams currently above us on their way down ... these next few drafts are crucial

Re: Mids
Saints are NOT a destination club. We need to build our own recruit well through the draft. Once we have them make sure we develop properly. Set goals expectations and development measures. Stop gifting games to rush to magical 50 games.
After 50 average - poor games will not suddenly result in a brilliant player. It will just result in an average poor ~75 game career.
We need another inside bull

Re: Mids
Our young senior players are getting plenty of experience which will hold them in good stead
Finals now absolutely out of the equation so time to give some of our other youngsters a sniff
Phillipou to play the rest of the year as a mid
Garcia
Keeler
Heath
Hotton
Give them a few games ... for the experience at least
If some of our senior players are carrying niggles/injuries then rest them and get them right for next season
Not a lot to lose currently

Re: Mids
Yeah. Really disappointed in Dow. Hasn’t come on at all like I hoped.
A fully fit Crouch would have been the difference

Re: Mids
There was the obvious breakaway from Butters - tbh I’m not even sure who got that tap?
And a couple of other clear breakaways
But it’s a bit easier when you have 3 elite mids at your feet

Re: Mids
The defining period was when Marshall was replaced by Campbell
Three goals in minutes due to centre clearances and sweeping around the back of the contest and into space, the 3rd goal remonstrate by Hill either because of the (lack of) length of the pressured disposal or because Hill had touched it
Either way Hill remonstrated by gesticulating to the Umpire - and fair enough too
Those 3 goals established a margin - then Marshall returned

Re: Mids
Our best mid is given a defensive role, and got touched up.

Re: Mids
We've got a bull but he gets zero opportunity at playing as a midfielder under Ross the boss
The really, really strange thing is...we recruited him because of his size and strength and explosiveness. He's perfect as an inside mid but we want to turn him into Tim Membrey
He was even under the radar from opposition clubs prior to St Kilda picking him in the draft. They saw him as the prototype modern day midfielder
https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/draft/ ... 529d7a2ec0
St Kilda’s top academy prospect could be pinched from the Saints’ grasp, with clubs considering whether to take gun running midfielder Mitchito Owens inside the top 20, reports the Herald Sun.
Owens has surged into first-round calculations after a terrific back-end to his 2021 campaign, averaging 23.3 disposals, 5.7 marks and 3/7 inside 50s from his final three NAB League games.

Re: Mids
With Ross nearing the end and Crouch injured, we have one true AFL quality midfielder in the team.
I see Henry, Hill, Pou as wingers, high half forwards who can rotate through there, same with Clark & Sinclair who are half backs can also take their turn and Windhager as a defensive mid. Wilson is promising.
We don’t have a Butters or JHF type explosive mid and there is very little in the VFL squad that fits this mould.
I agree with trying Owens, he has the physical attributes, perhaps disposal and tank are the concerns.
We are obviously not going to attract a free agent like McLuggage or LDU so we need to again hit the draft.
If Battle leaves and we get 2 picks inside the top 10 let’s hope we don’t f*** it up like we did in 2017 and we get a couple of VG young mids.

Re: Mids
Port has their deficiencies outside of their midfield.
We are stronger in other areas.
We only need 1 or 2 more topline midfielders to move past them.
Swap midfields (and coaches or adopt a more attacking game plan) and we win by 10 goals.
