Something changed

Post: # 2066459Post Big Max »

Our game plan against Brisbane, especially after quarter time just seemed different.

Was there a difference, and if so how do the Saintsational experts explain this difference?

We had Campbell in the Ruck, and we won a lot of clearances, certainly a lot more that usual, but I'm not so sure that was the big change.

We kicked a lot of goals, that's different. But why? Could it be that our forwards actually spent time in our forward line, where they could lead toward the ball carrier?

It also appeared to me that our backs didn't mark-and-kick possession game, but rather brought the ball forward quicker.

RTB demonstrating that he is not a one-dimensional one-trick defensive pony. I think he was very disappointed with our inability to score against Suns and tried a few things.

Our clearance wins didn’t hurt them
They walked out there in the end and scored goals so whilst our mids won clearance….the quality was poor and we often turned it over off them by fumbling, over running ball, handballs to players who were hot - that’s all decisions and execution,
I watched one play where Z Jones was picking up a bar of soap ….Niel just swoops in …so clean ..15 m handball 1 take thats class we know this
Our backline Q1 was defensively poor - Lions marked with ease
Hence the Q1 spray from Lyon
We kicked 7 in the last
If you go back …we did very similar against GWS debunking the myth we can’t score
1 thing that we did do was inject more run around the ball/outside with Henry second half. It worked
It’s what we lack - Steele Crouch Ross Clark Dow (lesser) are in / under mids. Poor from congestion
If we had a Rozee/Horn Francis who could compliment them…our whole mid dynamic changes

Any coach who needs to resort to giving his team a spray after the first quarter at this level, is clearly not getting his message through.

So what you're saying is there are 18 coaches in the AFL not getting their message through. Even Longmire has given the top team the Swans a spray at several quarter times due to their slow start.

Rarely seen Lyon do it- just businesslike and serious normally, but not last night. Longmire, pretty normal stuff for him and always has been.

Would much rather watch that every week than what we served up last week.

Every coach does it. Lyon plenty of times. All teams have bad quarters/halves/games.

The loss of 3defenders maybe had something to do with it ?

And yes all coaches give a spray…it seemed to have had the required effect

Little bit of luck and it would have been closer on the scoreboard.

Daniher, Hipwood, Rayner and Morris were marking and converting. They dominated marks inside 50 in the first half.

Daniher was marking everything and kicking them from ridiculous angles.

We had 12 inside 50's in the first quarter for 2 goals (our worse conversion quarter for the game) They had 14 inside 50s in the first quarter for 7 goals (their best conversion rate of any quarter).

Our clearance wins were a threat and Fagan mentioned it in his presser. We had 6 centre clearances in the first quarter versus 1 for them.

Our forwards didn't capitalise and yes...we bombed it forward most of the time in that first half which unfortunately didn't pay off...but it's a good sign and TC was part of the improvement for centre clearance numbers

Steele was tagged by Berry. Windy was busy doing a tagging job, so it was up to Dow and Clark in the first half. Unfortunately they weren't as damaging as the Brisbane mids, but they got us on turnover, not at stoppage.

It was our turnovers all over the ground that cost us.

Most teams rely on turnovers for scoring opportunities. Brisbane are no different there.

We dominated clearances q1 and were 5 goals down at qtr time

In q2 we got the ball back off them a bit and were able to score.

Once upon a time there were playing Coaches - and you could cop a right royal "spray" in the first minute

These days with Runners restricted, you are absolved until a break.

Couple of things , campbell coming in freed up rowan who did more around the ground stuff …. Our backs were giving away a lot of height to be lions forwards we were shorter , cammo going down with a screwed ankle wasn’t the best answer but while he was beaten maybe it will do him some good

I saw the look in Rossy's eyes when Brisbane kicked their seventh in the last few seconds of the quarter. He was seething. There were a fair few F bombs in his quarter time address and fair enough. Our decision making had sometimes descended into supreme idiocy, our back six were been slaughtered in the air and our pressure was below par.

We won the game from thereon, lost the 4 points in that first quarter, too big a head start for a quality opponent. Without Howard and NWM (which took Sinclair out of the middle). We may have seen a pivotal turn in this team's development under Lyon. Nothing changed in our system, just a better execution of gameplan, a far better balance of when to play safe and when to go quick. Of course Dow, Clark and particularly Henry, playing together a bit helps.

It looks like we've found a player with a weapon, Schoenmaker and found a key defender in Camminiti.

This was arguably the best game they've played this year, including earlier win against Collingwood.

I saw a couple of things that I hadn't seen much of recently, like:

* Jack Higgins snapping a goal from his non-preferred left foot
* Max King leading to take a chest mark
* Key tall defender (The Shoe) regularly passing to team mates up the ground
* Tom Campbell (who resembles a draft horse) galloping along taking the odd mark and winning a lot of tap outs, allowing Marshall to go forward and back
* Ross Lyon giving the players a good old fashioned spray at quarter time
* Kicking 7 goals in the last quarter

There were a lot of positives for me from this game.

To stay in the contest after the Lions scored 7 goals to 2 in the first quarter was super impressive, no mean feat when you consider they were without their in-form half back prime mover Nasiah Wanganeen Milera, who, if he had been there could have resulted in St Kilda winning the game.

Lions would have been disappointed with this performance overall, a home game and a bevy of experienced elite players in their team, playing a considerably weaker opponent should have won by a country mile.

It’s very hard to believe that the game plan or preferred style is to kick a low score and restrict the opponents to a low score (though I’m sure restricting the opposition is a part of it).

Perhaps this is an example of the team better executing the game plan and being more effective up forward and in the middle

Shows coaching is based on opposition and own players that are available, not a rigid prescribed rote delivered formula.

Yep
Lyon said same - forward-mid connection far better
We won some midfield ball (entries were not great and still turned over but we did ok for a change)
We had sone zip /pace around outside from Henry etc
Just gotta weed out some of the remaining Richo plodders and draft well

Our Defenders were to small Hipwood over 200cm Danaher over 200cm Battle 193 cm and cammaniti 196cm or cordy 195cm Ari 194cm no wonder they out marked us.
We need to go to the draft and get a big 200cm defender and trade for one as well not easy but its got to be done.
Great move to bring in Campbell it allowed Marshall to go around the ground.
If Cammaniti goes back which tall forwards do we have only king, now that Keeler is no longer playing forward he is playing as a CHB we have non on the list except Hayes who carnt get on the park.
Membery is not big enough at 188cm.

Tom Campbell actually does look like an old draft horse the way he lumbers around… what an analogy! Haha

Wonder if Schenmaker could play at CHF?

Word is he's a bit loose as a defender, but he's about the same height as Riewoldt, he can mark and can kick.

Who knows. I wouldn’t rule it out at this stage of his career. Way too early to pigeonhole him as solely a defender who gets lots of kicks off half back. We’ve plenty of those, notably Sinclair and NWM as well as Bonner and various others who could likely play that role.

He seems a natural footballer who racks up large numbers and kicks like a mule. Will be interesting to see how the club develops him. Hopefully it’s somewhere that he can use his attacking instincts to the club’s best advantage.

What's his best position? Where is he the most damaging to opposition in the modern game?

Where do Hawthorn play James Sicily?

I'm not equating the young draftee on our books today with the experienced captain we see playing at Hawthorn today, but both have a booming left foot...both are similar size (actually Shooy is taller).

Sicily was played at CHF early in his AFL career but I think we've seen what he brings playing in the backline. He won his first best and fairest in 2022 as a 27 year old and last year he was named All Australian
