Hit Outs
I watched the game last night between Carlton and Essendon
I was particularly interested in the ruck
Goldy dominated the hit outs 35-19 against DeKonning
In fact it was in total Ess 48 Carl 22
DeKonning was the best player on the ground.
I would take a gun footballer in the ruck, who is a presence around the ground and get his own footy over a tap ruckman who doesn’t contribute as much around the ground
The Hit Out stat is proven to be the most overrated stat in footy and has no correlation to outcome- not even clearances
After the ball leaves the hand in a ruck contest 90% of the time it’s still a contested ball win/loss at stoppage
Gun mids win ball at stoppage anyway regardless of who wins the hit out.
Only Gawn and Witts give their team a distinct advantage

Re: Hit Outs
Hit outs and hit outs to advantage are important but they don't win you matches on their own
I agree with B.M
Alan Richardson...back in 2016/2017 had a different view
In 2017, Billy Longer had the second best ruck contest win rate percentage from all ruckmen listed below.
Paddy Ryder was All Australian in 2017 and his win rate % was a tick better than Billy's
Sam Jacobs from Adelaide was in the GF. He had the best 'to advantage' percentage. Toby Nankervis from Richmond was the premiership ruckman
Billy's Hitouts and win rate were elite in 2017 (Seb Ross wasn't complaining), but his overall contribution was below average

Re: Hit Outs
It’s funny
We celebrate out of about 60-70 ruck contests
Half a dozen taps to advantage
In reality the opposing team has them as well so there is a net comparison
Would you rather
A ruckman get 30-40 hit outs and 5-10 possessions
Or
One to get 20 Hit Outs and 20 possessions
Considering the avg HO to advantage is about 10% - give me the around the ground dominance any day. Especially if there is contested marks involved.
I thought Marshall beat Moyle easily Sat - not sure the HO numbers but he was clearly better

Re: Hit Outs
Hit outs pfft … around the ground presence is the winner for me … they fill a hole in the chb area taking timely marks or pop up in the forward area taking marks and hopefully kicking truely for goals

Re: Hit Outs
I'd be interested in the stat "hit outs to disadvantage " , because I reckon Roma would be right up the top of that list.
Seems to have an unhappy knack of punching or kicking to the opposition out of the ruck.
Yes, he makes up for it around the ground.

Re: Hit Outs
Spot on. Marshall is extremely valuable, but the blind kicks out of the ruck are not. He does it so often that our opposition now set up for it.Banger9798 wrote: ↑Wed 12 Jun 2024 11:17am I'd be interested in the stat "hit outs to disadvantage " , because I reckon Roma would be right up the top of that list.

It cost us two goals on Saturday night, where on both occasions he fumbled his attempt to grab the ball.
I counted one instance where we retained possession, when Owens marked at half forward in Q3, that's it.
If Marshall can get himself into a position where he can grab the ball, there's no reason why he can't handball or tap it to our mids.

Re: Hit Outs
Getting a weird feeling of deja vu reading this.
You might be in to something B.M. with no hit outs why bother with mids around the ruck. Get on to RTB and tell him to post his midfielders up 30-40m from the ruck contest so they can at least be at the drop of the ball to provide an outnumber when Marshall hacks it out to no-one in particular.

Re: Hit Outs
Bulldogs lost the HOs today 56-31
Won the game by 67
And English - only 24 HOs was the third highest ranked player

Re: Hit Outs
Both Lobb and English got plenty of the ball. Lobb also had one of his best games ever. Kicked 3 goals and had 11 score involvements.
Teddy Richards and other Dogs mids add depth. Richards had 3 goal assists and 12 score involvements.
The old firm of Bont, Treloar, and Tom Liberatore schooled the young Freo pups ( most are young apart from Fyfe who had stats similar to Hunter Clark)
Bont was amazing. 30 disposals. 3 goal assists, 15 score involvements and kicked 3 goals for himself. Chalk that down to 3 Brownlow votes
