Re: RoMa in the ruck
The team on Talking Footy just discussed the same issue. Show is available on 7 Plus on replay
Joel Selwood and Trent Cotchin agreed he’d be more value passing the ball to one of his mids.
Selwood was asked a direct question after they showed vision of Marshall’s clearances and he said something like ‘if he’s got time to grab it and do a dump kick, then he’s got time to pass it to one of his team mates’. Selwood or Cotchin I think
They said if Marshall gets the clearance in the forward line, that probably means you have more numbers and it’s more likely you can score in that part of the field from a dump kick

Re: RoMa in the ruck
Exactly what percentage are we talking here?
I see he got 8 clearances from 39 hit outs
So at the very most 20% of the time
Let’s say in those 8 times he did a hit out instead?!
About 30-40% of those would be sharked by the opponent midfielders maybe more because they are better players
A few would have been repeat ball ups. And we would got 4 or so clearances maybe 2 clean.

Re: RoMa in the ruck
Team vs Individual
It permeates throughout the team if ALL players are sharing the footy. It’s a mindset.
He’s able to pick an opportunity to grab the footy out of the ruck. It’s a really good talent that Roma has.
Cotchin and Selwood also mentioned Max Gawn. They said Max could probably do the same thing at centre bounces as Rowan, but he doesn’t. If Max grabs the ball at centre bounces he’ll be looking to get it to one of his team mates.
We can take advantage of Roma’s ability to get first use out of the middle. Our mids (especially Sinclair and Steele - the good users) will be alert and be running forward of that congestion and Roma will get the handball off to a guy on the run who can deliver a precision kick to a forward in space.
Obviously, easier said than done, but that’s the perfect scenario. The other thing I get frustrated with, is that we’ve seen Rowan do this on many occasions (grab the ball out of the ruck at centre bounce and do a dump kick forward) and yet we don’t have a KPF at the old true Centre Half Forward position. How good would it be if Roma grabs it, kicks to the 50m arc and King marks and has a set shot

Re: RoMa in the ruck
Haha, what great analysis that is!
“The reality is for St Kilda at the moment is they are the second least damaging team from clearance. Only North Melbourne get a worse scoreboard return from their clearances.
“To put that into further context, his performance against Hawthorn the week before he had 23 contested possessions but didn’t have one score involvement. That’s never been done before in a game of footy.
“The numbers on the surface at times can look good and can potentially wow you, but once you dig a little bit deeper there’s a little bit more in it.”
I guess BM is one of the ‘wowed’!

Re: RoMa in the ruck
Blame lies with the entire playing and coaching group, with Marshall funnily enough being one of those.
We continually complain about the rubbish delivery the forward line receives, but aren't allowed to criticise Marshall hacking it in there instead of feeding a mid in a better position?

Re: RoMa in the ruck
Marshall must be operating under instruction when he grabs the ball and hacks it forward. Either that or he hasn’t been instructed NOT to do it. Whichever it is, he’s our only elite midfielder as it stands.
I’d have loved to have seen Crouch and Clark added for this week’s game. I’m assuming it’s only match fitness that is keeping them out of an undermanned midfield that is lacking in ball-winning ability.
