Jack Steele and centre clearance
I just watched the replay of our game. I'm watching us get carved up in the first half at centre clearance.
Just for one bloody game, I'd love the coach to allow Jack Steele to hunt the footy. Forget about the hard tag. Just win your own ball
I noticed all he was doing first quarter and most of the second quarter was minding Bontempelli.
Treloar was the dominant clearance player...so what happens? Steele goes to Treloar. Windy went to Mccrae. I think Riley Garcia was up against Zak Jones and Sebby against Ted Richards. I also saw Windy against Ted Richards just before half time.
I thought to myself if our mids know that Marshall is either going to break even in thr centre taps or lose the ruck battle, why don't they just play to the opposition's tap out? Why not assume you're losing each tap out and watch the opposition ruckman's hand?
So...I went back to the opening bounce. I paused and went to slow motion and watched Jack Steele. He didn't have his eyes on the footy or on the ruck battle. He's jostling with Marcus and he virtually had his back to the 2 ruckman at the point of when they're contesting.
How is that going to be beneficial to the St Kilda team when your best mid is more interested in what Bont is doing, rather than trying to get first use in the centre? FFS!
We know Steele is capable. Let him win first use for us. Get Windy or Sebby to do the tagging.
Anyhow...you see a fair bit more on the replay than you do live at the game. It's pretty clear that our turnovers really cost us early... probably the main reason for the loss...but gee wiz...we got seriously reamed by the umps didn't we?!!
Very skewed free kick count
They just kept calling play on when Marshall was pushed out, Caminiti pushed in the back, our players getting hit high, the Dogs players getting caught with the footy...and that lovely throw by Treloar...we got screwed royally.

Re: Jack Steele and centre clearance
Always second to the contest, evident in his high tackle count. He was coached that way at GWS and then by Richo and has never really found a second string to his bow.
Remember Lyon saying in a presser last year he'd like Steele to light it up towards goal.
An honest toiler and is growing in the Captaincy role but its not his go to be the creative type.
This is why I'd like to see Windy be given the licence to work the inside AND outside and drive field position with an attacking mindset.

Re: Jack Steele and centre clearance
bs.
He wasn't second to the contest 'Always'.
A 'honest toiler'? JFC!
Have you forgotten he won 2 All Australian blazers under a coach who allowed him to play the ball?

Re: Jack Steele and centre clearance
What's his stats for lighting it up as Ross calls it?
He's playing good the last couple of weeks, maybe he is learning to light it up...what's the point of your OP again?

Re: Jack Steele and centre clearance
Jack Steele hasn’t been able to replicate his 2020-21 form, where he was a game winner.
At this point he’s a very good workman with zero x-factor, unfortunately.

Re: Jack Steele and centre clearance
Injuries really stuffed him up last few years but his form has been good this year.
He really needs some help in there too. Crouch has been out and Dow has yet to play.

Holder of unacceptable views and other thought crimes.

Re: Jack Steele and centre clearance
Same player. Different coach to 2020-21
Different game plan
Comparison of stats below implies he was first to the footy more in 2021 than what he's doing now. More centre clearances per game - 1.7 now versus 2.7 per game in 2021. More frees for.
More kicks more goals. He spent more time forward. More inside 50's and more tackles inside 50. He was a more attacking player.
Small 'sample size' for current season but it's better using this year rather than last year when he was recovering from a broken collarbone and he had other injuries.

If people don't watch replays and don't see what's happening...sorry ... can't help you

Re: Jack Steele and centre clearance
He does what he's asked to do
Who ever thinks of a tagger as having X factor?
The current coach wanted him to be leaner. The current coach asked him to become a track and field athlete so he can run the length of the ground repeatedly.
When you see him turning his back on the footy and you see that he's more interested in containment rather than winning the ball, it's obvious isn't
Free him up and get some of that bulk back and he'll show you what he's capable of in the centre

David King called out Seb Ross ... claimed he's ineffectual and the stats prove it. Said a hard call needs to be made.

Re: Jack Steele and centre clearance
Everyone in the midfield is ineffective when the coach wants you to play the man and not the ball. The game plan is to nothing more than try to interrupt the opportunities for the opposition to score. Our style is manic attack on the player like a bunch of 8 year olds playing football. We are like a dog chasing a car, we chase the ball but have no clue what do with it when we catch one. While we have this totally negative game plan we will not progress because unlike last time he was here he hasn't been handed a team of stars.

Re: Jack Steele and centre clearance
Seb had zero tackles in the first half of footy against the Dogs. He had only 2 contested possessions up until half time.
He was at the centre bounce 6 times. He got zero centre clearances. Also zero stoppage clearances

Re: Jack Steele and centre clearance
Mitch Owens attended centre bounces ONCE Only for the whole of the first half. Not as a mid. He was contesting the ruck against Sam Darcy
Why haven't we tried the 2 best mates in the centre? Windy and Owens could be a good midfield combo ... But the coach refuses to use Owens as a pure mid

Re: Jack Steele and centre clearance
I already explained it in my op.
I go to the game to socialise and cheer and support the team but I also like to assess individual players.
I don't always watch every game and I don't watch 120 minutes of our losses (that's for sure)

Re: Jack Steele and centre clearance
Didn’t Seb play on the wing a fair bit?
The fact he attended only six CBs out of 29 suggests that
Wingman are probably the lowest tackling players in footy
(Probably along with HBs) they are transition players and they play off the stoppage
Inside Mids obviously have the highest tackle numbers, followed by small forwards
Wingman and HBs also have the lowest CP count. As I said, they are transitional running players.
Seb has played inside mostly this season - the want to get Garcia inside saw Seb pushed to the outside- a role he played I think in 2021.
Wingman generally get 20-25 maybe 2/3 tackles very low clearances but have high metres gained. And are normally good kicks
He did take Bontempelli when he went in though
I don’t think Seb is a great wingman. Can play the role but is not crash hot at it.
I think he should be a 2nd string inside mid

Re: Jack Steele and centre clearance
BTW
Steele is a dominant two way mid
He’d be in the AA squad of 40 atm - check his numbers
They are pretty elite
Not as flashy as some but is more complete and consistent and gets it done both ends of the court (some of the AFL elite mids don’t know where defence is and how to do it, and think a tackle is a c**k!)
