To answer that I'd like to do a deep dive into the list differences each coach had available to them in their flag years and then also the team's that lined up on their GF days.

For example the Pies were the better team in 66 and had our measure but couldn't get it done on GF day, we also had a couple of important players out. And Jeansy clearly had an impact on the day especially the 3/4 time address. Some similarities to the 2009 season, we clearly had the better season but Geelong were better on the day, arguably a better list in the end.

With regards to Jeansy's Hawks side, I reckon I could have coached them to a flag or two.

Allan Joyce's flag probably was similar to Scott's 2011 Geelong flag, the sides coached themselves.

Allan Joyce coached two flags
88 and 91

And yes, you are right, Tim Watson could’ve coached a flag at Hawthorn in the 80’

Whilst Norm Smith couldn’t have coached StK to the finals in the 80s

List and list health
Far more important than coach

A great coach can coach a good list to a GF
A great coach can coach an average list to finals
A great coach might steal a few wins with a s*** list

What they can’t do is turn s*** into strawberry jam!
