2017 Draft
#7 Hunter Clark
#8 Nick Coffield
#36 Oscar Clavarino
#46 Ben Paton
Rookie: Daulton Langlands
Looking like a decent draft haul at the end of 2020 season.
Coffield played his breakout game against the Dogs at the Gabba in the elimination final.
Clark looking like the matrix at half back.
Paton establishing himself as a reliable lock down defender and Clavarino and Langlands showing some development potential in their first couple of seasons.
Albeit 4 defenders selected, Paton played wing in U18 level.
Fast forward, Langlands & Clavarino gonsksi.
Coffield wrecked by injury and also gone.
Paton’s progress halted by Roughead.
Clark handy but lacks the running power to be a force at AFL level, was up for trade last year.
Things can turn!

Re: 2017 Draft
A very poingnent point you make with regards to procuring a list capable of contending and its why I have this current resolve not to let my expectations rise too far until a much a bigger sample size is completed with the likes of NWM, Pou, Owens and Windy and just list builds in general. All these names have had great starts but the time to judge their GF capabilities will be in 2 to 3 years time.D.B.Cooper wrote: ↑Fri 06 Oct 2023 2:50pm #7 Hunter Clark

Too many false dawns to get sucked in early, it's coming up to around 20 to 25 years since we had any success in putting a list together that can make it to the last day in September.
We need to invest heavily in the list management department and make it the strongest component of the club and make it a business unit that is independent of the revolving coach door, and that is not to suggest the head coach doesn't get any input, far from it, but more that the list management department is owned and operated by the club and not a contractor. Change coaches, don't gut the list management department at the same time.

When s*** trucks like Ginnivan Frampton Markov Lipinski Cameron Cox can play in a premiership anything can happen.

How Fagan wasn’t able to exploit their lack of height in the backline on a hot day was a big fail.

Re: 2017 Draft
Who says the 2023 draft will be any different
Maybe we will strike gold
Maybe after 6 years the will be no one from this draft on the list
The National Draft is no guarantee of success. It is an important mechanism to build a list but it’s not the only way you build a premiership list

Re: 2017 Draft
list build strategy has to be viable also, players taken high in the national draft should only be given 2 to 3 years to prove they are capable of becoming a GF type, Coffield playing 52 games over 6 seasons is way too long to hang onto a high DP that hasn't given commensurate value.B.M wrote: ↑Sat 07 Oct 2023 9:38am Who says the 2023 draft will be any different

frequency of turnover needs to be higher to get more looks close up at prospective GF types.
40 odd positions on a list is relatively few considering only 23 get picked each week and you need about 25 GF types to contend so hanging onto players too long doesn't give you more opportunity to find players, especially when you don't have your own VFL side as a club.

What is a GF type. Bobby Hill? Jason Johannisen? Tom Boyd? Stewart Dew?Vortex wrote: ↑Sat 07 Oct 2023 9:54amlist build strategy has to be viable also, players taken high in the national draft should only be given 2 to 3 years to prove they are capable of becoming a GF type, Coffield playing 52 games over 6 seasons is way too long to hang onto a high DP that hasn't given commensurate value.B.M wrote: ↑Sat 07 Oct 2023 9:38am Who says the 2023 draft will be any different

No doubt you had them all pegged as GF types but what did you recognize in them before they starred in Grand Finals?
What do we do with all these players after 3 years of not showing they are a GF type?
Where does Cooper Sharman fit? Maybe he's just an EF type player.

Shane Ellis and Will Langford were grand final types and spuds during the regular season.

Re: 2017 Draft
Yeah I don’t really get it
Nick Riewoldt played in 2 grand finals and a draw rematch… didn’t tear one up.
Gram was a decent player but no super star… could have been a Norm Smith Medallist in 09.
Plenty of players in many grand final teams that are GOP or not much more.
There’s an occasional GOP threat turns on the performance of a life time in a GF.
I don’t really get what we’re going for here
IMO one of the biggest myths out there is the team of champions vs a champion team ethos that people push from time to time.
Most premiership teams have around 7-8 champions… another 6-7 that are good players and then the rest are those that are good enough to do their job.
Seems to me that this is the mantra that Lyon believes in most. He tends to try and build teams around his champions.

Shane Ellen in 97.
The list changes for 2025 have begun, always an interesting time for an avid supporter.

Re: 2017 Draft
off original topic but agree. I have had this discussion with the trouble and strife - she has a theory you need a person (or 2or 3) but you also need people. You cant win without people even if you have 2 persons but can win with only people ( although very hard).skeptic wrote: ↑Thu 12 Oct 2023 1:59pm Yeah I don’t really get it

Seems to me that this is the mantra that Lyon believes in most. He tends to try and build teams around his champions.
For example:
Richmond had persons - Dusty, Rance, Cotchin (Stars), but they also had people - Jack, Grimes, Basha, Edwards(A grade players)
Collingwood - Persons - Moore, De Geoy, Daicos, ,People - Sidebottom, Daicos, Pendels
You get the idea
At the moment we have some people but need 1 to move to Person status and more people:
Person - Steele, Sinclair
People- Wilkie, Marshall
Potential rises: King, NWM, Owens,
