I just looked up the trade and we got 3 picks 5,13, and 48 and a handful of nothing players. That brought us Joel Smith who was a great player that we screwed over and Aussie Jones and we wasted pick 13. We were not screwed in the deal as Plugger only played another 98 games and we got two 200 gamers. The deal was fine but we could have done more with it.
How did we screw Joel Smith?
I thought he screwed us, if anything.
We screwed him by cutting a player due to him needing a knee reconstruction.
He blew his knee playing for our club and we cut him.
That is us screwing over a player whichever way you look at it.

48 was always a saints pick.
2 x 200 gamers....bulshit.
Don't try re writting history FFS. Smith played only 58 games for the saints.
Hardly fair compensation as I saId before.
Take the massive chip off your shoulder.
Smith played over 200 games. The fact he only played 58 for us is our issue and nothing to do with the fairness of the trade.
He was pick 5 and played 200 plus games.
We cut him because he blew his knee out and we decided to be ruthless.
That was St Kilda shooting itself in the foot nothing to do with the fairness of the trade.
IIRC, it wasn't our choice for Plugger to leave.
It was entirely his (or his manager Hession).
He was on his way to Collingwood until one of their board members decided he would rather have his son playing in the team than Plugger.
Then someone at AFL/VFL House decided it might be a good idea to get him to Sydney.
They first had to convince the Coach of the move (he seemed to do a 180 degree turn on his thoughts very quickly)
Saynta is correct - we got reamed by the authorities who decided it was in the 'game's best interests' to get Plugger to Sydney (whatever it took)
No picks they were going to come up with were going to give us fair compensation for losing the greatest full forward of his era.
