Would Ross Lyon make the difference at Melbourne?
Are we watching another club that doesn't know how to win a flag with a talent laden list?
I know many supporters are steadfast in their belief we are assured a flag now we have Ross as coach so just wondering if the logic applies to a club like Melbourne, would Ross guarantee Melbourne a flag with their current list.
Or just like us, is Melbourne incapable of taking that next step when gifted a highly talented list due to inadequate club culture and irrespective of who the coach is?
Noting Covid cups aren't real flags, and pretty sure the Melbourne players will have life long regrets if the Covid Cup is the only silverware that list ends up winning.

I was making comparison to the clubs 2nd most talented list managed by Ross the first time around, the 1st being the 66 premiership team. The Fireman wrote: ↑Sat 16 Sep 2023 8:17am so now we have a highly talented list ? You've changed your tune.

I would happily have taken a ‘covid’ cup
They were premiers, that’s all the history books will say!
Should’ve won last night
Kicked themselves out of it!

Melbourne won a flag - nothing to prove
Their forward line is crap

Re: Would Ross Lyon make the difference at Melbourne?
Yes and no.
Throw Ross in there just for his discipline and standards, yes.
Add in the rest of his role, no.
IMO Melbourne doesn't have that great a list beyond their top 5. Petracca, Oliver, Gawn, May, Lever, but have been able to build a team around it.
These are the list management decisions we need to make. You don't win premierships with half back flankers and pressure forwards. They're needed but can be in your bottom 6.

They won a Grand Final by 13 goals.
They lost two finals this year by under 8 points. Same as last year.
They're going alright.

Brayshaw, Salem, and Grundy are all very good players. Pickett and Fritsch are good players.Otiman wrote: ↑Sat 16 Sep 2023 9:26am Yes and no.

Won a Flag by 78 points. They'll be up again next season.

Re: Would Ross Lyon make the difference at Melbourne?
Compared to other teams in the top 4 their talent drops away quickly, just like the Bulldogs. The only difference is Melbourne have managed to build the team around the talent and support with reliable role players.samuraisaint wrote: ↑Sat 16 Sep 2023 9:42amBrayshaw, Salem, and Grundy are all very good players. Lol, I think Secret_Vortex just hadn’t tried his “no one cares COVID cup” conspiracies in a while so he needed to start this thread!
I would love to be as “unsuccessful” at finals as Melbourne have been in recent times.

But don't down play the leg up the blue baggers got from the maggots.
Mighty deep pockets some blues fans have.

The club's second most talented List, I would actually assert the most talented, was managed by Grant Thomas.Vortex wrote: ↑Sat 16 Sep 2023 8:55amI was making comparison to the clubs 2nd most talented list managed by Ross the first time around, the 1st being the 66 premiership team. The Fireman wrote: ↑Sat 16 Sep 2023 8:17am so now we have a highly talented list ? Re: Would Ross Lyon make the difference at Melbourne?
I think Melbourne's issues have more to do with a lack of any genuine quality big forwards than their coaching.
Rossy may have got them over the line against Collingwood (without Daicos) last week or against Carlton last night. I doubt he'd get them a Premiership with that lack of any good big forwards.

Re: Would Ross Lyon make the difference at Melbourne?
Yes, because Ross has proven he can win premierships.
He is also proven to fix sides goal kicking and improve teams attacking capabilities.

Re: Would Ross Lyon make the difference at Melbourne?
You'd take one a bit like we took our Ansett Cup but Melbourne players consistently comment how they are desperate to win one at the MCG....kinda of confirms the players value an MCG flag much much higher than a Covid Cup whoch is kind of obvious. And it's why that Melbourne list will have hurtful regrets if the Covid Cup is all they win.
Yeah they are missing some forward options but also not easy to procure the sum of all the parts and so hence my question, would Lyons super magic coaching powers compensate for Melbourne's lack of forward option's.

Re: Would Ross Lyon make the difference at Melbourne?
If only we had bought Steven May and not Dougal Howard.
Melbourne seemed to be robbed of one goal and possibly two. I couldn't see any bent fingers in the one that was declared touched and Max Gawn hit to ball onto the post but could have been behind the line when he did it.
It shows how teams must be at their peak to win flags. Clayton Oliver missed many games and is nowhere near his best. "Our" Christian Petracca is also carrying something otherwise he would spend more time on the ball. I'm not sure why Crusty Clown isn't getting a game, he was crucial in their flag year.

That win against the Dogs who were stuck at Adelaide during the GF week, were flown in late from memory - Dogs didn't have an equitable chance on the day of the dance and the Audi-ski-racks peaked that year. They look slightly better than us on our rebuild year at best in my eyes.samuraisaint wrote: ↑Sat 16 Sep 2023 9:39am They won a Grand Final by 13 goals.
