Saints list reset
In todays Herald Sun, Jon Ralph writes about St Kilda's 'list reset', it confirms the overall consensus of the footy media that bringing Ross Lyon back to coach our footy team was a very good move:
"Saints list reset
Ross Lyon is falling in love with his list and all the possibilities it contains. Call it his anti-Dan Hannebery moment.
When he arrived at St Kilda the message to player managers across the nation was clear – Ross wants one of everything.
A key back, a key forward, a star mid, and he might be prepared to pay up for them.
He was open about his bemusement that St Kilda paid the same $14 million in salary cap as a Geelong side that was so vastly superior to his mob.
And yet as he made clear last week, St Kilda is going back to the draft.
So instead of paying $800,000 for a big splash in the trade space, Lyon’s coaching will combine with elite drafting, and who knows where it will take the Saints?
Making finals gives him a free pass to build slowly, so consider that forward line in 2026 with Max King, Mattaes Phillipou with 70 games under his belt, Mitch Owens as a 22-year-old and Anthony Caminiti.
Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera will be a sight to behold charging off half-back by then, if he isn’t already. Teams win premierships by combining elite drafting with great development and A-grade coaching.
St Kilda is a fair way from a premiership, but if Ross the Boss ever considered a quick fix at Moorabbin, this season has convinced him otherwise."

Jon Ralph is a d**khead. He was the one that said that Jack Reiwoldt would play next year only for him to retire the next day.

Going to the draft
With pick 11
Pick 31
Pick 39 (Compo for Gresham)
Pick 41 (Clark)
2 x Picks in 50s (one for Billings)
That’s 6 picks
But not exactly a strong draft hand
You might get some good players from that, but not sure you’ll get many stars
Others that will be looked at to get some capital
Howard, Steele, Paton
But I doubt there will be any movement there
Free agents
None really worth it
Trades
DeKonning and Flanders gone
Henry likely Freo
Dow will stay a blue most likely
With pick 11

Not a strong top 20 draft hand but theres been phenonmenal players in the draft era between pick 30-60.B.M wrote: ↑Tue 05 Sep 2023 4:59pm Going to the draft

We have had many ourselves.
Imagine another Sam Fischer ( pick 55) or Andrew Thompson ( pick 62) or Adam Scheneider (pick 60) or Austinn Jones (pick 48) or Jack Steven (pick 42) or Leigh Montagna ( pick 37) or god forbid looking at other players in pick 30-79 range...Ablett, King, Scott, Harvey, Enright, Fevola, Scott, Hawkins, Libertore, Parker, Chapman, Watson, O'Loughlin....the list of players taken in 31-79 is said by many to contain most of the greatest afl players of the modern era.

Re: Saints list reset
Does what Ralph says about us being a fair way off mean weeks or the distance between Moorabbin and the MCG. He is not clear on his unit of measurement.

Agree. I am just looking at my tickets for the Elimination Final this week. How does that make us "a fair way off a premiership?

There's power in a big group of youngsters from the same cohort, they feel like part of the journey together and while all won't make it, you increase the chances of finding another Marshall, Wilkie, Sinclair, Milne, or Geary.

Re: Saints list reset
Has he resigned
He’s probably still pissed we never traded him last season
Best mate
LDU
Wants a fresh start imo
Be disappointed if he left - but also disappointed in the way he presents as an élite athlete especially being a midfielder
I have a problem with professional athletes (like Cordy and Luke Dunstan in yesteryear) who don’t present themselves in mint condition
Not good enough imo
If you are paid 300k plus and all you have to do is train and be in peak physical condition- I mean fk me

Re: Saints list reset
I like what our recruiters have done the last couple of years , but I hope you are wrong with trading those players for picks and taking them to the draft. They are all ready made players being swapped for kids that may or may not come good in 3 years , and the odds are stacked against the draft replacements for Gresh Billings and Clark all making the grade. We still need to wait another 2 years before we know if Hotton & Keeler for example make the grade. What I hope happens is they swap the pick they get for Gresh for example for another ready made player eg Dow.B.M wrote: ↑Tue 05 Sep 2023 4:59pm Going to the draft

Re: Saints list reset
Is it just me or has Cordy looked fitter these last few weeks ? Slight change in body shape since Round 1 ?
Or is it just that he is more comfortable in defence - which he clearly is - which makes it look like he knows when to go and when to conserve his energy?

Regardless your response confirms your original post is opinion stated as fact. Which is your right and you may well be right, as it is the rest of ours to call it out.

Yep, you don't have to be a rocket surgeon , or a brain scientist for that matter, to work out our list wasn't as piss poor as some on here (plus the initial views of the coach ) were sprouting.Trev from the Bush wrote: ↑Tue 05 Sep 2023 7:38pmAgree. I don't recall myself or Ross Lyon or footy commentators like Jon Ralph ever saying that St Kilda's list is "piss poor", but irrespective it is nowhere near the quality of the top teams.saynta wrote: ↑Wed 06 Sep 2023 11:07amYep, you don't have to be a rocket surgeon , or a brain scientist for that matter, to work out our list wasn't as piss poor as some on here (plus the initial views of the coach ) were sprouting.Trev from the Bush wrote: ↑Tue 05 Sep 2023 7:38pmAgree. Nor is it unreasonable to suggest that right now St Kilda is still a fair way off being a serious premiership contender.
99.99% of commentators did not expect St Kilda to finish in the top eight this year, and that goes for a hell of a lot of Saints supporters as well.
The gap between the top four teams and St Kilda is still substantial.
The fact that the team achieved 6th place at the end of the H&A season is in a considerable way due to the club changing its coaching panel at the end of last year.
The players have confirmed that since Lyon became coach the standards of training have markedly improved, and while I'm not a fan of Fox Footy's 'On the Couch' I agree entirely with their statements on Monday night that one of Lyon's hallmarks is that he has always held his players to account, and that St Kilda is a very hard team to play against.

To me it was fairly obvious we would be playing at least one final this year
