Re: All Australian Saints
Wilkie is a great story. Picked out of SANFL as a full time accountant. Played every game since, now All Australian full back.
What a gun.

Great work Wilks, thoroughly deserved it.
Selected at Full Back also, which suggests he was first picked in the last line.

Re: All Australian Saints
nothing between roma and english so you'd think they'd give him a spot on the bench, especially as he finished the stronger and led us into finals with those last games.

Re: All Australian Saints
Marshall, Sinclair & Wilke all of the rookie list.
Some kudos to our recruiting staff is probably appropriate.
Just imagine how good we'd be if they got the pointy end right .. With Bontempelli & Patracca we'd probably be a complete side and flag favorites ..

Re: All Australian Saints
Our two all Australians were rookies as was Rowan Marshall.
I think the last player we had in the team who was drafted in the national draft was Riewoldt in 2014. Before that Dal Santo in 2011.
Seb Ross and Jack Steven were nominated but never made the team.
It would be nice to see Owens or NWM or Max King in the team next year.

Re: All Australian Saints
The flowery presenter of AFL 360 reckons Cal Wilkie is the most ‘contentious’ of the 18 named on the field.
Joey reminded him that Wilkie was named in the squad of 44 two years running and Cal’s numbers stack up against Tom Stewart and other KP backs.
Being a Geelong supporter and rubbish AFL commentator he has no fvcken idea obviously
Tom Stewart gets a third of his touches from kicking in. He ALWAYS takes a step outside the box.
Wilkie doesn’t kick out from Full Back as much as Stewart. We have NWM and Sincs as first preference and Webster also kicks out because Wilkie becomes a marking option for all 3 guys kicking in
The other thing about Wilkes is that he beats his opponents 1-1 and he usually takes the oppositions best forwards. Steven May or Wietering would be the only other options but their intercept marks or disposal numbers aren't as good. Harris Andrews and a few others don't defend as well 1-1.

Re: All Australian Saints
Two years running Tom Stewart is lucky to be named All Australian
I think May or Andrews should've been named next to Wilkie

Re: All Australian Saints
Some players build a rep and live off that
Tom Stewart is a good player - better than Wilkie
But has he had a better year - no
You don’t just pick the best players and biggest names in the AA side
But the players who actually had the best seasons!
But the AFL likes to celebrate its stars

Re: All Australian Saints
Why do they find it essential to have half the AA team as mids or back up mids?
Is there a real side in the AFL that has a team structure similar to this mock team? Has there been a real side in the last 5 years that has so many mids?
They keep doing this now the last few years and it's rubbish. Getting as bad as the Brownlow
The interchange in 2023 is exclusively occupied by specialist midfielders. No back up defender on the bench and no back up ruckman.
Two hybrid midfielders named on the half forward line, although these days, Rozee plays exclusively as a midfielder
Of the 3 full forwards in the team, none play as back up ruckmen or have the skills of a tap ruckman.

Re: All Australian Saints
Tim English deserves to be in
Marshall stiff to miss out on a place on the bench. RoMa has had a better year overall than most others who play first ruck
Of the current top 8 teams if I had to choose someone other than RoMa as ruck specialist, it would be Gawn followed by The Big O

Re: All Australian Saints
Absolutely stoked about Wilkie. Was unlucky to miss out last year. What a player he has turned out to be. He’s played 108 games for St.Kilda and is yet to miss a single game!
Curb your enthusiasm - you’re a St.Kilda supporter!!

Re: All Australian Saints
As with all AFL awards, the selection process doesn’t work very well.
For instance, more than half the players in the AA team come from clubs that didn’t finish in the top 4. Likewise the Rising Star. Ans it’s not uncommon for a Brownlow winner to come from an underachieving club.
I find it difficult to take these awards all that seriously. But well done Wilkie and Sinclair nevertheless.
