I’m far from a Dougal fan but happy for him to stay but on lesser money…he’s not suited to play on the gorilla forwards

At 199 who should he play on?
He should be a stopper - who hopefully doesn’t get it much

Re: Dougle on the market article
he ain't going anywhere, Lyon already refers to him as Zac as in Zac Dawson, loves a peel-off defender who has elite dispatching skills.Saintmike65 wrote: ↑Sat 26 Aug 2023 10:20am I’m far from a Dougal fan but happy for him to stay but on lesser money…he’s not suited to play on the gorilla forwards
and plus as far as the fans and their 3 second memories are concerned, Cordy is only a game away from returning to their hate list.

Put a quick skillful player on him and he's cactus. Thilthorpe looked like a superstar when he played on him in Cairns. He made Dougal look stupid.
Maybe a straight swap for Tarryn Thomas from the Kangas, if they lose McKay they'll be looking for a KPD, I know his got baggage but the boy can play

No way, Dougal is better than McKay. McKay takes a lot of intercept marks, but aside from that, doesn't defend very well.

Re: Dougle on the market article
Van Es is reportedly 198cm now and came at 101kgs. He leaps, takes marks and punches and is very quick over 20m. I guess we will take our chances when his ankle heals.Killa wrote: ↑Fri 25 Aug 2023 8:36pm Perhaps these “journalists” get their stories from sites such at this - so rubbish in and rubbish out
Port Adelaide were most unhappy to lose Howard, who they rated (he captained the Club after all and at a very young age)
I do not know the specifics of why Howard sought to leave Port Adelaide - all I do know from a former Norwood player then an executive at Alberton was that it was a personal issue which those at Port Adelaide could not resolve (to their disappointment)
Howard is a 199cm defender
The general comment across the AFL is that there is a dearth of such defenders - hence the market for the North Melbourne player
So given that is the market, if we move Howard on who do we replace him with?
Yes, we have Cordy on a Contract WB would not give but Cordy gives defensive KPP depth which is why we recruited him (to replace the short term emergency Frawley)
Maybe Lyon has seen enough of Adams and Van Es to conclude that they will be AFL ready by Round 1, 2024, both still needing to add some weight in my opinion before coming to grips with the key forwards of the competition
But back to the key question, if Howard is moved on as many on here suggest, how do we replace Howard at 199cm and 95kgs?
And particularly given such players are at a premium across the competition?
I also note that until injury Howard held preference over Cordy
Caminiti would also physically replace Howard with a bit of defensive training.
Howard was lacking in one on one strength as a key but had other attributes to counter with.

Re: Dougle on the market article
Cordy has looked good in the last two games when our midfield has rodgered the opposition mercilessly. He hasn't had to play with a midfield getting flogged which Howard did all year and apart from against Adelaide has not been beaten.
I would want a top 10 pick for Howard, good key defenders are rare commodities which is why they are talking $800K a year for Ben McKay.

Re: Dougle on the market article
That’s how I see it too
People saying “he should be a stopper” don’t get it
He’s not the gorilla home defender aka Browne of a few years ago
He’s a rangy, attacking CHB probably better playing off his Nan than wrestling and running and jumping at the ball to mark or spoil
We’ve had no option at times but to play him as a stay home gorilla and he’s been burnt a few times for strength, positioning and he pannicks and does dumb shyte on the last line
Trade if deal is great if not …keep …
“Yeah….nah””

Re: Dougle on the market article
The position of CHB hasn’t existed for a decade
We’ve moved slightly passed the Chas Brownlow positions from the early 1900s
Dougal is well behind Battle and Wilkie in 2nd or 3rd tall defender positions
He is a key defender - and at 199cm definitely should be
If you want him to be an attacking tall defender - Ala Sicily
Ask yourself- do you want him making decisions coming out of defence with the ball - do you want him kicking it?!
To me he is a poor man’s Harris Andrew’s or Darcy Moore

Didn't he come on a long term contract?
Unlike most, he hasn't improved with age - only got worse.

You're right about "CHB" so how about a third defender/intercept defender.B.M wrote: ↑Sat 26 Aug 2023 4:19pm The position of CHB hasn’t existed for a decade

Watch his first batch of games where he played up the ground more & even kicked a goal or two.

Cordy looks more assured in the backline than Howard. He defends better.

Re: Dougle on the market article
We already have Wilkie and Battle as Second/Third defenders
Howard is nowhere near as a good as either and probably not as good as Highmore in that role.
Dougal’s main attribute is his height and reach

And kicking, he’s elite in that area and that’s one of his roles to be one of the dispatchers especially taking the riskier kick.

Re: Dougle on the market article
Can’t say that I’ve ever noticed that Howard is especially good by foot.
When he takes the kick ins, seems like all he ever does is bomb it long to a contest. Players like Sinclair, NWM etc can do that but also have the nerve to go short or run it out on occasion.
Personally am not a fan of Howard kicking out

By Champion Data's definition, a long kick to a 50/50 contest is considered an effective disposal.

He's a very good field kick. That's different to kicking in...
Kicking in after an oppo behind involves elite decision making. That's not a strong point for Doug's, but he has his strengths
He's got good closing speed and he gets a fist in to spoil where others can't reach. He's quicker and taller than Cordy. He's the perfect match for a couple of the tallest KPF's like Joe Daniher
As I said, he's also good by foot when he has a team mate leading straight towards him. See target -hit target

He did most of the kick-ins after a point.
That changed this yr.
It's now Sincs, Nas, etc.
If Boris took that task off him, well, I trust Boris' judgement and infer that Dougie wasn't the best option.
Boris would've discussed it with Lenny the mids coach, cos they needed to work out set plays n tactics for kick-ins

Re: Dougle on the market article
If he comes in next week I’ll spew up.
An absolute dud. Plain & simple.
Does not provide anything of value.
No good on power forwards, no good on agile forwards, doesn’t provide any rebound or run & carry to hurt opposition the other way.
If slightly out of position is then rendered completely useless.
Anyone can crab sideways and get their 80% kicking efficiency
