I'm not sure too many got more right than they get wrong. I know not many last 5 decades doing it. Very simple logic indeed.

Our recruitment team at the time WAS a joke.B.M wrote: ↑Tue 15 Aug 2023 10:42am Retiring - nearly 350 games 780 odd goals 3 or 4 Coleman medals
Why a thread about him
He SHOULD have been a fkn SAINT!!!!
We had pick 9
He went pick 13
He was a STAR in TAS as an 17yo played senior footy for Clarence and kicked 5 in a senior GF
His dad played 300+ games for Clarence and is a tas footy Hall of Famer
His cousin was our best player!
He did work experience at Moorabbin
He was a known quantity
We decided on David Armitage- ok selection
And ignored what was right under our nose!
Our recruiter at the time
Couldn’t see a position for him at AFL level.
And didn’t think it’d be a good idea to have the cousins together at StK
What a joke
Another woeful decision- which cost 1 maybe two flags!
Only interested in the ego boost from finding a roughy player that no other club was interested in.
Even worse was the waste of our second pick.

Brad Howard
It was clear JB had gone to Queensland or to a Qld game at the carnival
D.Armitage
B.Howard
Like in 2002 when he must have seen a Gippy Power game
B.Goddard
M.Ferguson
Look he had some great selections
B.Hall, M.Hudghton, L.Montagna, S.Fisher
Real standouts
And of course Milney as a rookie!
But comparing to Geelong
X.Clarke at pick 5 Geelong took Bartel at 8
NDS at pick 13 Geelong Kelly at 17
M.Maguire at Pick 21 Geelong Stevie J at 24
Montagna at Pick 37 Geelong Gary Ablett jnr at 40 (I know he’s a f/S)
J.Houlihan at Pick 49 Geelong M McCarthy at pick 69
Plus Geelong took C.Gardner and H.Playfair in the 2001 draft
That draft is why Geelong won 3 premierships in the ensuing decade
And unfortunately why we won 0

Re: Jack Reiwoldt
5 decades?
50 years recruiting?
Are you sure???
Wasn’t Ian Stewart the main recruiter in the late 70s and early 80s
I know he got Burns, Cunningham, Frawley and Plugger
Was Colling a recruiter as well in the 80s

Re: Jack Reiwoldt
50 years service, the last 30 in recruiting.
From 65-81, he was a statistician for the club and would give Jeans stats sheets. They forged a friendship. Jeans would refer to him.as the 'Professor' due to his memory preparation and football brain.
82-91, he was appointed by Drake as the first Junior Development Manager at Club level in 82 and built a huge network of scouts in our zones.
His recruits are legendary.
Just a quick fact. Between 2001 and 2012 only one team won more than 11 games every year. It was St.Kilda and Bevo had a hand in recruiting most of the players.

Re: Jack Reiwoldt
He did have
Pick 1 & 2 in 2000 finished last
Pick 2, 5, 13, 21 in 2001 (super draft) overlooking Judd
Pick 1 & 22 in 2002
Pick 8 in 2003
That’s 9 top end selections in 3 drafts - blind Freddy wouldn’t have fkd that up!
His selection of Fisher at 55 in 2003 was great
Gwilt at pick 63 very good
He picked a few absolute duds too though
Howard, Sweeney, Raymond, Heyne and Connors
But they were speculative though - so no issue
It was
The non selection of
Chris Judd
Jack Reiwoldt or James Frawley
Cyril Rioli
That really hurt
Go back to the 90s
Absolutely hit and miss - like a bad perm!
Only high picks
Good
Hall, Hudghton, Hayes, Baker, Blake
Poor
Beetham, Walton, Begley, Atkinson, Healy
Some of those picks were absolute busts - that’s the difference between winning and losing
Forget all the coach failures and sackings over the years for poor performance and I’ll tell you straight - we got it all wrong
Show me a great coach - and I’ll show you a master recruiter at that club!
Stephen Wells, Kinnear Beatson, Graham Wright best in the business imo
And their secret - just pick the best player
I mean Luke Parker FFS went at pick 40!!!!
We took Jamie Cripps at 24!

I’ll go through EVERY draft pick from the draft era when Bevo was recruiting 86-2007 - when I have time
But I’ll tell you what it’s the choices at the top end of the draft that are key - one fkd decision and the team after you get a champion!!!
Ball 2- Judd 3
McEvoy 9 - Danger 10
Billing 3 - Bont 4 - not JB
McCartin 1 Petracca 2
In depth analysis this weekend
A 50%
Everitt, like Peckett came through our u19s not even sure he was drafted?

Re: Jack Reiwoldt
Everitt and Peckett were developed in squads of 15 and 17 year olds that lived in our zone.
Got any idea who bought these squads together, that's right, Bevo.
He and Drake revolutionised zone development.
First to appoint a full-time manager, first to set up scouts in all our areas, first to put together zone squads. A few years later the whole league was doing it.
Everitt was the last free hit from zone development we got.

Re: Jack Reiwoldt
So you are going to go through drafts starting from 37 years ago to prove what, that recruiting is an inexact practice and its hard to judge how a 17-18 year old will develop physically and mentally? Sounds like a real worthwhile endeavour. Be sure to go through every other recruiters picks as well to prove how wrong we got it, I know it will make you feel better to prove you know better, as pretty much all the players you are looking at have now retired and you know what happened to their careers.B.M wrote: ↑Thu 17 Aug 2023 8:53am I’ll go through EVERY draft pick from the draft era when Bevo was recruiting 86-2007 - when I have time

Be sure to post who should be recruited this year as well, not just saying best player available, actual names.

Re: Jack Reiwoldt
Bit unfair on X Clarke due to injuries. He was freakish and reckon we win both 2009 and 2010 with him. Same with Goose verging on elite before a broken leg.B.M wrote: ↑Thu 17 Aug 2023 12:35am Brad Howard

No
I’m going back through drafts to examine how poor our drafting has been
But really
The proof is in the pudding
0 premierships
Bit like Freo who we have something in common with

Re: Jack Reiwoldt
Every player has injury
Xavier did a knee in 2009
Had a few other minor injuries prior to that
But prior to 09 in 8 years he played 105 games
He again did his knee at Brisbane
But, that was at 27yo
In perspective
Lenny Hayes did a knee in 2006 & 2011 at 26 and 31
He won a B&F in 2012 at 30 and played until he was 34
Point being
You can recover from injury - in the end he was delisted at Brisbane
I think X Clarke was skilful - but Bartel was a champion!
He had won a premiership and a Brownlow before Xavier did his first knee

Just an observation.
For someone who claims to not care what other posters think, you sure do post a lot of times when your opinion isn't accepted unconditionally.

You could say the same about a lot of your revision but yet, here we are again.
Of course, you'd think your bleatings about 23 years ago is probably necessary and if we learn from the sermons you give here, we will improve.
Perhaps we can go back and fix it.
Unnecessary. Lol thats fresh coming from you.
