Wilkie should be our 2024 captain
Right now there are too many questions re Jack Steele
In the history of the game has there ever been a club captain/midfielder in such an important game collect no possessions in the final quarter
It is almost inconceivable
Add to that no possessions to Crouch amongst others…
I look at the other captains (Bont, Cripps etc) just will themselves to contests and win the ball
Wilkie to my eyes takes no prisoners and demands excellence
Finally would it be inconceivable to look at trading Steele (IF his ongoing injuries are too much)

Agree with this - like Steele as a player, but he has always struck me as a reluctant captain. They asked for a volunteer and everyone else took one step backwards......

Trade Steele to Norf or GC.
He's never shown a glimpse of game-changing brilliance like Bont, Cripps, Danger, none of them.

Further to this
Both Crouch and Steele had over 80% TOG in 4th quarter, adding to my incredulousness
Don’t get me wrong I like both players but if someone said to you before the game that neither would have a possession in over 80% of game time you would automatically say “well we can’t win a close game then”

Re: Wilkie should be our 2024 captain
2 time All-Australian, equal 3rd in a brownlow, 5th in the AFLPA MVP and 4th in the coaches award in 2020, clearly has influenced and changed games. Might be that he is not the best choice as captain going forward, but I think his performance has had more to do with his body being pretty beaten up this year rather than him being a 'plodder'. The rest of your most is just trying to have a hot take. Trading him would really be a foolish move.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Tue 08 Aug 2023 2:02pm Trade Steele to Norf or GC.

Re: Wilkie should be our 2024 captain
I think its sensible Curly and could relieve pressure on him
Crouch was tagged second half by Hewett to be fair
Steele had little excuse
Even commentators noted he seemed more fixated on Cripps than winning the ball
Lyon wanted him head to head ….in the end tried Sinclair to nullify
Steele had 11 for the whole game …I could understand if he tagged but he wasn’t
I think we need sone on field leaders quickly

Wouldn't be against this. Reckon he is the smartest and most vocal out there. Would do all the extra things off field a good captain would do

Re: Wilkie should be our 2024 captain
+1
Now that there's a pile on started, I recall something RTB said in his media interviews last week after the Hawks game - or maybe it was after the North game.
He said the sports guys told him Marshall needed to come off the ground and Steele was due for a rotation and "I made the call to leave them out there".
I watched the replay of the Carlton game and the coach had both in the centre at most centre bounces and stoppages in the 3rd and in the last quarter. That's too high a workload.
Steele was good with some important chase downs and tackles in the last quarter, but there was no spark. No freedom. We were hunting to defend. They were hunting the footy
Anyway...point being....coach has admitted he makes the call to do these things. Leave players out there, even though they are due for a rest.
So... It's not inconceivable that Lyon made the call once too often in Q1 and Q2 and Q3 and both Steele and Crouch had nothing left.
Righto Watch the RTB fanboys come at me and dismiss that explanation

Re: Wilkie should be our 2024 captain
The players and the coaches would have a better handle on who should be the captain.terry smith rules wrote: ↑Tue 08 Aug 2023 12:42pm Right now there are too many questions re Jack Steele

Also...Backmen don't do as much running as mids.
Cripps has had periods of games in the last 3 years when his captaincy was also questioned. Cripps and Bont aren't robots and neither is Jack Steele or Brad Crouch
ALL players (especially midfielders) need to take allocated time off the ground to be effective up until the final siren
It would be good to see what their average TOG for the last 2 years (Jack and Brad I'm talking about) has been compared to this match.

Re: Wilkie should be our 2024 captain
I think Wilkie would make a great captain but there's no need to get rid of Steele.
Wilkie played really well those weeks that Steele was out injured earlier on and then, IMHO Wilkie went down hill a bit when Steele came back.
I think appointing Wilkie captain would increase his input (which is already high) and would also be valuable for Steele (with not as much pressure on him).

It's obvious to all (including the commentators that Steele had a role to fulfil). That's the nature of the bloke coaching. 'Ryan Crowley' ring a bell...maybe Clint Jones ring a bell??
Only a muppet would think that Steele was hunting the footy first

Re: Wilkie should be our 2024 captain
Feel sorry for him, his injuries have reduced him to something far less than those AA years.
But he didn't win his AAs for his leadership ability and that really is what is being questioned.
Doesn't mean he can't be replaced as Captain to focus on himself and still be an integral part of the future.

I personally said I like him as a player, doesn't make him a great captain. Banger was an awesome player, but you'd never have made him captain.

Re: Wilkie should be our 2024 captain
Steele has had some really significant injuries this year, and has been down on out put.
God forbid he hasn’t matched his 2 x AA seasons, so it’s time to demote him as captain.
Only those internal would have a true indication of his performance.
