skeptic wrote: Mon 07 Aug 2023 9:00am Byrnes is the most overrated player on the list at the moment.

Has way too many games where he can’t get near it.

It’s why I’d rather try harder with a guy like Bytel. Sure Bytel is not a winger but can he do any worse going into the Centre here and there vs a winger than can’t get near it
I know you’re a Bytel fan Skeptic but Bytel is way off the pace and not going to make it either, he’s really good at VFL level but just a step off it when at AFL.

Agree on Byrnes though, I heard that he was given a multi year dear a few weeks which if true concerns me greatly and not a good start for Lyon and what he values.

Bytel probably gets a chance this week but he probably needs Bytel to get dropped which is highly likely but they aren’t like for like. If he gets a shot he needs to have a breakout game because he’s running out of time to change minds.
This was less about Bytel making it but rather a commentary on the role inflexibility that can be an RTB staple. In the end, it may all be as effective as shuffling deck chairs on the titanic… but the approach that sees one player get ample opportunities and another get very limited has always really bothered me.
Say what you will RE Bytel, he could only have contributed at least what Byrnes has with the same opportunity. I’d always take the gamble with the player earning opportunity vs the one squandering it
Should get a call up this week, if he doesn’t I think you’ll know what RTB is thinking with regards to his future at the Saints. As I say he’s fast running out of time to change minds so let’s hope he gets selected and can have a breakout game.
Bytel is miles away from being an AFL midfielder. Clean but slow and doesn't cover the ground at all.
Totally agree, was just suggesting he might get one last chance this week if Lyon applies selection integrity and drops a midfielder based on yesterdays disappointing performance by our midfielders.

So I’m saying if Bytel gets a game this week it’s because of team rules more than it is about Bytels future because I’m very confident his papers were stamped much earlier in the season.
Selection integrity is an alien concept down at the Saints, unfortunately.

That's so hilarious 😂😆

You just put your foot in your mouth and made your hero look silly

Round 17 and 18 we were up against Melbourne and the Gold Coast Suns in consecutive weeks. Two teams with the best credentialled inside mids and among the best in the league at winning clearances and winning contested footy.

Ronnie Byrnes played in both games. Meanwhile Bytel is BOG for Sandringham in consecutive weeks and voted best player for the month of June.

You'd think we might want to use a young kid hungry to perform on the big stage and to showcase his strengths at winning clearances and winning contested footy. Unfortunately this kid isn't a winger or a speedy forward. Unfortunately the coach had other ideas and Bytel was playing for Sandringham

Lyon dropped Ronnie from the team to play North in Round 19 ...and who replaces him on a wing?

Yep... you guessed it...none other than Jack Bytel...the guy with a reputation for being a winger... 🚫 NOT!!!

In other words...Ross Lyon has done well in areas, but he's also made mistakes. Not playing Bytel in matches where we need to match up well with inside mid opposition bulls is a mistake. Playing him on a wing as a like for like with Byrnes is a MISTAKE

We have a full contingent of players at Sandringham who have not had as many opportunities as Cordy, Pou, Higgins, Byrnes, Crouch, Steele, Seb Ross and Brad Hill etc...

Crouch, Steele, and Seb Ross and even Brad Hill have had stretches of weeks where their form was patchy and at times poor. The only one who has been 'managed' or rested this year has been Hill.

The long year and 22 games (so far) including practice matches takes its toll. There's still 3 games left and our mids are cooked

Anhoo...Maybe you should put your hand up to coach Teffers because I think the guy in charge is either setting us up to fail or he he's playing favourites and it's costing our club a spot in finals

Also cost a flag or two in the past as well. Anyway good post. All true unfortunately.

Billings would be better than Byrnes

Byrnes is the ultimate headless chook

His game yesterday was poor beyond belief

He plays one decent game followed by 2 or 3 below average ones

To me, this is just an example of not seeing the forest from the trees.

This role mantra thing that RTB has going (and has form in) is one of the more weaker aspects of his style as it results in a certain degree of inflexibility. Bytel may not be the solution and as I’ve posted elsewhere isn’t like for like… but it is a loser argument of the highest to suggest other midfielders shouldn’t be trialed more often or with the same leniency as a player that is chosen and is monumentally failing in the role they’re chosen for.

Frankly… if that is what os bring dished up, I’d rather see Bytel, Billings, Peris and Hotton have a crack. Heck Paton would have been more effective

Edit
Oh and for the record.
RTB still sits at exceeded expectations for me at this point. Obviously unhappy to lose yesterday but I think he’s done pretty well to date

Midfield were poor after HT yesterday ( crouch after 3q time)

Thought I mentioned that too???? Are you actually reading the posts fully???

Questions
Has Steele doe it in the past?
Has Crouch?
Has Sinclair?

I don’t bag them because they’ve been there and done it

Teflon
Have you ever played a bad game? Or played a game at all???

You have off days, although Crouch was mighty for 3qtrs and the decision to play him across HF in the last for a period was dumb!

I don’t bag players who have credits in the bank and have EARNED respect!!!!

I actually wasn’t really bagging any player, maybe Cordy a bit because he’s ordinary

Phillipou looks very good Caminiti a maybe?

Just staying a fact
Regardless of who and why
3 of our starting forwards are rated below average

As long as you don't specifically identify Lyon for his current or his past coaching mistakes then all's good

If you are saying the selection committee are making errors then that's probably Banger and Lenny's fault

Lyon is a good coach - proven

Great coach - no - never won

What he’s good at
Coaching a defensive mechanism
Leadership and communication
Conviction
Tactics and strategy match day

What he’s no good at
Coaching offensively - ball winning/ball movement
Flexibility- pigeon holes player - some times incorrectly
Development- over the journey has preferred role players
List management decisions

That’s a lovely theory and assumes you have a cupboard full of midfield talent to replace our existing staring mids
From yesterday - prior to the game - who in the mids did you have being dropped from:

Steele
Crouch
Owens
Windhager
Clarke

Who was being replaced from that lot by Bytel ??? Hotton??? FMD
Oh and before you say…Billibgs for Gresham ….Billing’s was dropped last week cause he could t get near it ..
Lovely theory
Crap in reality

As long as you keep p!ss!ng and moaning bout the coach
Ignore our captain who had 11 touches for the game 0 in the last along with the rest of the so called “senior leading midfielders”
You’re Ok
Hater gonna hate I guess …
This is fun just p!ck a shyte narrative and away you go !!!

You don’t bag them cause your footy analysis is lazy and birdbath deep bathed in cliches and Heral Sun popular opinions
You don’t bag cause you can’t explain how our “so called “ senior midfield brigade failed so miserably
You don’t bag them cause it’s easy pickings on 1st and 2nd year players
You fail to mention that 3 of our kiddie forwards have had to hold the forte all year
It’s a nothing post telling us nothing new and ignorant of the reason we actually lost the game and have lost multiple games this year
Carry on
