Leo Connolly is a case in point - can kick but lacks competitiveness- which is why he’s been put inside at Sandy, to see if he can win his own ball and tackle. He cannot!

Being a great athlete alone doesn’t either
Otherwise Steven Gaertner and Spencer White would’ve made it

You MUST tick a lot of boxes to make it as a player - that’s the art of recruiting

But the most important trait - can they consistently impact a game - because that’s what good players do

Poor Siposs...earning 2.52 million but likely to lose his spot in 2023 about literally the worst punt in Superbowl history costing the Eagles the game. Hes been an excellent punter outside that one gaff. Maybe Sharman would like to earn millions instead of waiting in the VFL for a few scraps off the big boys table?

I would suggest that neither Bytel nor Sharman bring to the table what Byrnes (and Wood) bring

The fact that Byrnes continues to be selected is its own commentary - and selected ahead of Bytel and Sharman

Sharman was played in defence at the end of last year because we had no height (due to injuries) and he could make up for a lack of KPP weight with his ability to jump (and punch)

I think you’re right but also believe this to be the most overrated consideration in football and IMO an enduring weakness for RTB.
You cannot have a player on the wing whose primary contribution is defensive running. Unless Byrnes has outright shut an opposition key mid out of the game and based on the numbers, that’s unlikely, that contribution isn’t enough.

If doing a defensive job, you still need to hurt the opposition the other way otherwise all he’s doing is occupying a spot to slightly curb the decision making if players that are winning more ball than him.

Give me a lace out pass to a forward over 10min of pressuring the opposition mids so that one of their 3 kicks goes to a contest instead of straight to a team mate

12 possessions on the wing is not good enough - and it included no intercept possessions which are what wingers are there for when doing defensive running - they fill the fat side hole in d50

Then it was stated that he was a good kick - which he is pretty good

I was making the point that being a good kick doesn’t make you a good player

Sharman has capabilities but also has deficiencies which limit him imo

I think as long as Cooper has “Application and drive” (as you put it) he can secure a contract extension. In the long term, I’d like to see him as the third tall in our forward line.

While all true, a current fact is that too many of our players in our current team are poor users of the ball. Sharman is one of the few who is a good user of the ball.

Lyon in remoulding the team must improve our ball use if we want to become a genuine contender.

Now Sharman may or may not be part of that future. But unless Lyon and our recruiters can inject better ball use we are not going to be a genuine threat (except to my mental health and level of contentment!).
