He was at the Saints and that is what Roo was referring to.

Looked like Tarzan but played like Jane.

Roo was disappointed as he tried to nurture him.

My thoughts on the Stanley trade are exactly the same as the Hickey, Long, Bruce, Newnes, Dunstan, Acres (trades / delistings), whilst some thought the sky is falling and these players would suddenly be A graders that we have traded out, the fact is they weren't.

I hope our List Manager and Coach realise we can trade out players and that's OK because keeping the same list is not the answer.

Keep turning the sods and keep the fingers crossed.

I was against Acres and Bruce but the rest didn’t bother me so much (though I thought Dunstan was worth more than just letting him go). Your point is well made though.

I think this also highlights the significance of correctly identifying the value of a player.

Stanley absolutely was a player we should have kept as the third forward/utility player that can go into the ruck and be decent in the hit outs…
But as most have pointed out, he’d have been maligned ++, pbly harshly because expectations would have been higher than what he was reasonably capable of.

Both underrating is as big a problem as overrating players. I reckon we’ve not be great at both for a long time

I was against the Acres trade for three reasons; He was an after thought (the steak knives in the Hill trade. I liked him as he was one of the few we had who would several players to him before disposing of the ball. He genuinely liked playing at St Kilda, shared a house with RoMa and seemed invested in the Club.

I will likely be guilty of my defence of Paton, Clark, Coffield and Billings but to be honest, I want a well balanced list in position, age and each player's contract to commensurate with ability and their future at St Kilda. Hopefully Toce, Silvagni & Roughead(?) can achieve such a thing.

An epic fail from our illustrious recruitment team that chose McCartin over “you know who” in that same period.

Just a sh*tty football club.
Why do you bother ?
I wish I couldn’t. But I’m stuck with this club. Doesn’t mean I have to justify their crappy decisions, or defend their crappy management.
Its 2023, we are 5th and Mc Cartin was 10 year ago
Maybe a counsellor could help? Just saying.
Yes, it’s 2023, we haven’t made the finals since 2011 (unless you want to include the COVID hub year) and we’ve lost four of the last five. Remember we were 8-3 at some point last year. How did we go in the finals?
Those are questions that will be better saved for a qualified therapist.
He/she will talk about 'living in the moment' and 'prioritising your concerns' in line with things you can control and letting the things you cant control, go.

Enjoy the win this week. You can whine about Petracca and McCartin next week.
I am living in the moment. The moment is that we barrack for a poorly administered football club and I’m calling it for what it is.

Yes, I can’t control it, but nor do I have to defend 12 years of crappy management.

Clearly, you're emotionally involved. Maybe a little over the top. I can understand that but I dont recall asking you to defend anything.

You actually posted about something that happened a decade ago.

Russell Greene - woeful trade

But it sure started at Ian Stewart

WTF would you get rid of a dual Brownlow medallist?

Only for his replacement to play two games

While he won another and two more premierships!!!!

I think there were some off field issues.

Didn’t effect him at Richmond

He won a Brownlow and played in back to back flags and played about 100 more games

Then he came back to StK and worked for the club

Did have a falling out with Jeans as did a number of players in the early 70s
And Baldock finishing up didn’t help us retain Ian

I don’t remember what we got from the trade but it’s pbly a net loss for us

Edit… traded with pick 61 for a return of pick 21 that saw us net Hugh Goddard = disaster
Which recruiter picked a slow draft horse in Hugh Goddard instead of a thorough bred with pick 21.
Oh, it was the same incompetent clowns who insisted on Paddy McCartin ahead of Christian Petracca.

You're on the money here!

#21 for Stanley seemed quite generous compensation for a talented athlete, but under performing player.
The fact we stuffed up the pick is the issue, not the trade value.

Goddard was an elite junior talent. Was seen as a steal at 21. Ruptured his Achilles which is a bastard of an injury.

Hugh Goddard was slow

He played about 10 AFL games

Stanley has played 140 at Geelong 2 GFs and a premiership

Would he be handy as a back up to Rowan - I think so

The pick was adequate- the selection was the issue.
