He is looking strong and plays in a premiership team . Sliding doors if we kept him...our team would look vastly different .

I don’t know that he’s ever really gotten that much better than when he was with us. Still inconsistent.

But we’ve absolutely screamed for a player like him so me he left. Essentially a key position player that specialises in hit outs.
I don’t remember what we got from the trade but it’s pbly a net loss for us

Edit… traded with pick 61 for a return of pick 21 that saw us net Hugh Goddard = disaster

Watching tonight's game there is nearly always an ex Saint winning the ruck contest, something that's quite foreign at the Saints of late.

Will we pick up a player in the SSP window :?:

Can't even remember what we got for him. Has had a middling career and would have fit in well with our mediocrity years. Would have been a whipping boy.

Everyone thought we got a great deal at the time. We also had Hickey, Longer and Pearce at the time.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work out but you take that deal any day.

Gave up Stanley and pick 60 for pick 21 which we turned into Hugh Goddard in the 2014 draft. We delisted him in 2017 where he was picked by Carlton as the first pick in the rookie draft.
Pick 60 became pick 59 and was used by Geelong on Jordan Cunico.

Not sure Stanley would have helped us in the 2014-2017 years. We were playing Hickey and Longer as our ruckmen.

Was a bit timid with ground balls, played one good game. Got good coaching elsewhere, blossomed. Another player we held back because we just couldn't develop/ use him well. Good he was given release from our then system which was crap.

That was my point, would have been average with the rest of the team.

Your typical good ordinary player as old jack dyer would say . Got lucky to be traded to a team capable of winning a flag . He took a few years to become established at the Saints , so if you look at his stats for the last two years he played with us , then compare them to his career at Geelong they are very similar.
If he'd stayed with us his career probably would have been over sooner and obviously without a flag .

Probably lucky that other ruckmen around him got traded to other clubs or were not as good. Geelong have carried him for a long time. He's a great athlete but an average footballer.

Had his best 2-3 years probably now at the end of his career but... seriously...

I think it's a waste of time and energy thinking about a trade from close to 10 years ago

What's he done tonight. The Swans have dominated for 75-80% of this game and they are only 1 point up. 3 quarter time. The Cats give me the shitttts!!!

What did we get? Hugh Goddard?

An epic fail from our illustrious recruitment team that chose McCartin over “you know who” in that same period.

Just a sh*tty football club.

Hickey & Longer, two of the most mediocre rucks of that era.

I wish I couldn’t. But I’m stuck with this club. Doesn’t mean I have to justify their crappy decisions, or defend their crappy management.

Yes, it’s 2023, we haven’t made the finals since 2011 (unless you want to include the COVID hub year) and we’ve lost four of the last five. Remember we were 8-3 at some point last year. How did we go in the finals?

That’s that theory of getting rid of players for Draft Picks

Assuming Draft Picks all turn out great players

Brendon Goddard
Ben McEvoy
Rhys Stanley
Nick Dal Santo

We got
Tom Hickey
Hugh Goddard
Luke Dunstan
Billy Longer

Not a win there at all

Those are questions that will be better saved for a qualified therapist.
He/she will talk about 'living in the moment' and 'prioritising your concerns' in line with things you can control and letting the things you cant control, go.

Enjoy the win this week. You can whine about Petracca and McCartin next week.

No offence to Stanley but he is an ordinary player (nothing wrong with that) that benefits from the star studded line up around him. If he had stayed with us during those low years he would have been exposed and no longer playing AFL. The winner from this trade was Stanley.

Handy Ruckman

Great athlete

188 games

Would have made a vey good ruck pairing with McEvoy

Common denominator is that the players and specifically the player leadership at St Kilda drove both Stanley and McEvoy out.

If they were more positive and less negative towards these guys they may have stayed.

I'm not saying Roo as captain was more responsible for the trading out of these guys than the coaches and the list managers, but he didn't help.

I think one of the strengths of great captains is the ability to embrace youth and their inexperience and that's something we had with Geary and I think Steele is also very supportive of our younger players

The players were asked to rated their team mates. Stanley came stone motherless last.

He was also the only Saints player Roo canned in his book. A wasted talent
