Jack Hayes
Injury - has really hurts us this year!
Not because he’s a great player, far from it, but what he’d do structurally for the team.
Allow Owens to play forward/mid, allow Caminiti to develop at Sandy, chop out Marshall in ruck.
He’s an experienced footballer, he’s a big body, he is a contest in front of the ball.
Basically, Hayes and Membrey have not played!
It has given opportunities to some kids, but the experience forward of the ball has been missed!
We are the second lowest ranked team for i50 efficiency

Re: Jack Hayes
Agreed. His role is the one Owens has been playing all year.
Also he is a natural leader and commands huge respect from his peers. Works his arse off.
Unfortunately, too late for him to hit fitness and form to play (edit: any more than) the last 4 rounds.
Also will be 28 next year. Hopefully can impact the club with a 50+ game career.

Re: Jack Hayes
Agree BM I think we all forget how well he was going before doing his ACL. He and a fit Membrey would make a big difference to our forward line entries. I do wonder if we will ever see Membrey back again given his knee issue? Just allowing Owens to play solely forward/midfield may have helped our struggling midifield. But again Owens is more a bash and crash style and doesnt have the inside outside speed we desparately need.
I have been on this horse for some weeks, but I wonder why RTB wont try Stocker through the midfield? To me he is exactly the player we have been craving, he plays with an edge and has a burst when required.

Our forward line for majority of the year has had three Under 19 footballers in it.
Hayes is a massive out for us.

Re: Jack Hayes
Hayes performed quite creditably in the 4 and a bit games he played for us.
But, since he got injured, he’s clearly developed into a superstar.
If he ever regains full fitness, people should prepare to be a little disappointed. He’s not another Paddy Ryder.

How well was he doing?
He had one sensational game (which we lost)
Then was reasonable.
That is all I remember.
The hype was bigger than Sharman’s (and Sharman kicked more goals)
I think it was a knee jerk , sensationalist reaction.
He looks a goer. That’s for sure, but beyond that, I have no idea.

Re: Jack Hayes
Whilst far from proving he is AFL standard, Hayes is competitive and versatile.
Agree he would provide more flexibility at this point than Camaniti.
He also lead at the ball carrier when playing forward which is something our talks seem reluctant to do consistently.
His worth with supporters grows, however I agree another big strong willing combatant wouldn’t go astray right now.

Re: Jack Hayes
In the 4 games he played he averaged 16 disposals 4.5 marks & 1.5 goals per game and chopped out in the ruck. Plus he is a big body who makes room for team mates around him. He will prove to be a worthy pick up if he ever gets a run at it again, the only thing against him is his age 27yo he will have smaller window to make an impact.shanegrambeau wrote: ↑Wed 28 Jun 2023 2:02pmUh?Impatient Sainter wrote: ↑Tue 27 Jun 2023 4:21pm ….I think we all forget how well he was going before doing his ACL….

Re: Jack Hayes
I am going out on a limb here but I reckon if we get TDK, Hayes could easily become a centre square clearance specialist as a pure mid.
He has that happy knack of getting the right bounce and knowing where the right spots are.
I'm drawing on his SANFL experience but he was very effective and played as ruck and as a pure mid at times and he is a clean dispatcher of the ball by hand.

10 disposals
0.75 goals
3 marks
Not marking him hard, just trying to be real
He's definitely a goer by the looks.

One of the remaining games he went off quickly so we shouldn’t count that.

Re: Jack Hayes
I have no idea, but its clear an offer has been put to his management. So, we would be aware of the asking price. Can you put a first round price on a guy you've dropped and not allow a trade for reasonable value.
Then perhaps we give up Marshall's contract to the Blues and take DeKoning and their first round pick? Haha.
With their first round pick and DeKoning, we might just win more taps to advantage, have a ruckman who can leap, play forward and is that little bit taller and the thing that will interest Lyon the most, he is 4 years younger.
Then with their first round pick and ours, we might even have a chance of trading a Membrey or someone similar for Wet Toasts first pick and then draft the best kid in the country.
Not a likely scenario but what about Hayes, throwing his weight around at centre clearances, with a straight run at the fall of the ball. Even with Marshall at least foiling centre bounces and making the fall of the ball predictable. Yet, we digress.
Getting Dekoning isn't impossible until he signs with someone else, but having grown up with his father Terry and knowing the family well, it's not likely he will leave Melbourne unless it's for Geelong, who seem to have backed off since Sydney got serious with talks of $5m and 7 years. I reckon its St.Kilda or stay at Carlton for 2 years and then off to Geelong. Marshall for DeKoning and their first would seal the deal I reckon (Voss would be salivating) and Carlton would like that deal for sure.
Re: Jack Hayes
Was a versatile and most valuable player with Woodville West Torrens
And did not enter the AFL system until a mature SANFL player
I seem to recall he was dropped for a game ahead of his knee injury
His reputation seems enhanced by his absence

He wasn’t dropped
His skill set is what we need - not his level of ability - he is a GOP
A fwd who can pinch hit in the ruck

Re: Jack Hayes
He was omitted in favour of Paddy Ryder, who took on and beat 210cm Reeves. Marshall took on Nash and did ok. Ryder was the man who gave Hayes the opportunity in the first place by going home I think. At 196cm, Paddy came back in style and not only beat Reeves but he kicked a couple of goals.
If there is a skillset that we are missing, it's the 'overated' skill set of 197cm ruckman, who can beat 210cm ruckman, provide lollies for the midfield and go forward and goal. His ability to get up in big games was handy too. When Paddy went down, he took Ratten with him.

Re: Jack Hayes
Jack is a very versatile player who moves all over the ground. He reads the play well, is strong in contested plays, can mark and is an ok kick. He is not a flashy player but brings experience and adds to our structure.

Re: Jack Hayes
I really liked what I saw, even though it was only a small sample size. But for some reason I dont feel he's a natural forward, he needs time up the ground. In the SANFL he excelled as a mid/Forward and even spent time on a HBF.
He's currently listed as 2-3 weeks away, I'd love to trial him at sandy as a mid resting forward and off half back..... I'd say swap him for Howard but he's only 194???

Re: Jack Hayes
Yes, we needed a CHF/Ruck backup last time he played. Our needs are different now.
He is better off suited sneaking forward, creating mismatches in the air. At the moment we go to Higgins and Butler as a marking target far too much for my liking.
Re: Jack Hayes
That's why I reckon Sharman should be playing more time in the forward 50 more than any other part of the ground.
