David King say…
Jagshemash! Man who look like Flattop in Dick Tracy movie film say we need to make tough call for chance of great success. He suggest Rowan Marshall trade at end of season in return for more strapping young lad prospect to be champion footyball player of future.

Re: David King say…
David King is shorter and far plumper than Nick Daicos. See on ground interview. David loves Nick. Many commentators do.
David has an unhealthy pallor, worse than normal Melbournian.
Why is anything he says given credibility. Because he knows Adam Simpson well?
It would be a joke if the guy had a sense of humour.

Re: David King say…
Don’t trade good players to get better
It’s a model that doesn’t work - we’ve tried it before!
How’s this for a plan
Get rid of players not up to it, add first and second round draft picks - like Phillipou and NWM

Re: David King say…
Absolute rubbish.
Marshall is amongst our top 3 players and arguably our most important.
I would like to see Campbell tried in the team and Marshall given more time up forward.
Campbell may not be in the Ryder class but he is a better tap ruckman than Marshall.

Re: David King say…
Why would you move Marshall from a position where he excels
To a position he is basically hopeless
That 3 year stint with Ryder was like the Gawn/Grundy situation now and was bad list management
Ryder was a good ruckman, and a good player - that we didn’t need

Re: David King say…
That sounds wonderful
Keep all your good players
Trade our rubbish
In return other AFL clubs will gift you 1st and 2nd round DPs???
Why has NO ONE thought of this before????

Re: David King say…
Why do we need other clubs draft picks?
Just need to nail your own
We will have 5 picks inside 50
Make room by getting rid of duds

Re: David King say…
It’s all predicated on:
1. When you think you’ll challenge and if that’s not for another 2 years …
2. Trading quality you think you can replace/cover from a certain position in that timeframe..
The idea of stockpiling additional top picks on our current ones has appeal ….question is….IF we did this and loaded up on A+ midfield talent plus maybe another gun tall defender?? Could we get by with a solid ruckman only after trading Marshall??…OR do you get the gun kid mids/tall defender in then go FA for a mature ruck from elsewhere to give you 2-3 years while your kids peak hoping Heath still comes on???
I’m not sure but it certainly feels like it’s sliding doors time for our club - get this wrong and we stay mid range side for a lot longer…be bold …get it right …in 2 years we are a legitimate, sustainable option for top 4 (sustainable because our top draft talent will be on the up with years left..)

Re: David King say…
As he states the aim isn’t to just draft in line with other clubs who will also draft but to ramp up how much talent you can bring in now to give you an advantage
You won’t do that 1 first round each year
We got lucky with Owens etc
I’m not sure we will every year

Re: David King say…
If we were offered Pick 9 & Pick 25 for Marshall.
Would you take it?
I would.
Marshall has 3-4 years left in him. You'd get 1 if not 2 200 gamers out of it.

Re: David King say…
And THAT is the exact point
Plus could we cover what we get from Marshall with a mature ruck from elsewhere?
I’m not sure paying TDK top $ and draft pick gives the side enough of a boost
A top 10 pick in the quality of Pou plus another at 25…has appeal
Fascinating time …risky …but right now we know incremental improvement is probably not gonna get it done
You also need to ensure you give the 23-26yr bracket a decent chance to challenge so you the longer you wait..

You are spot on with this one.Teflon wrote: ↑Mon 26 Jun 2023 9:21pm I’m not sure but it certainly feels like it’s sliding doors time for our club - get this wrong and we stay mid range side for a lot longer…be bold …get it right …in 2 years we are a legitimate, sustainable option for top 4 (sustainable because our top draft talent will be on the up with years left..)
Need to back our current side in, or go hard and trade out some talent for a short term rebuild.
There's no inbetween, unless we want to finish 6th to 12th for the next 10 years.
Unfortunately I don't have the read on the crystal ball for this one.
What I can tell you all is that you don't want to lose the winning culture. So tanking for the sake of picks aint on. You do what you need to do with the list, but try to win every game.

Re: David King say…
He's 28 this year, as much as id hate to lose him, if a club offered three 1st rd picks then you'd have to take it.
Its not the same as trading 21yo McEvoy.. and it would give us good draft picks before the Tassy team starts hoarding them all.
Allowing Gresh to leave is a given, but really, id happily hold on to Ro unless its an offer to good to refuse.

Re: David King say…
Is he a very good player, yep. A lot of teams would love him as icing on the cake.
Is he a good number 1 ruckman?
He’s not great at ruck contested, not great resting forward, not dominant in the air around the ground.
He needs to be 10cm taller or shorter, he’s stuck in no man’s land for me. He’s like an oversized mid.
We need a dominant ruckman to take the next step.

Re: David King say…
This would be very tempting. Would probably want some late round pick upgrades as well.
Particularly as this draft is meant to be a very good one.
The idea has a lot of merit- Particularly if we did pick up TDK.
Heath will be raw but capable next year.

But ruck?
Some on BF think his tap work would improve drastically if he had better mids reading him…
I don’t agree
I watched the same set of mids look superb while Ryder was feeding them…even tap out backwards to a roving Gresham made him look superb…
Marshall doesn’t do that
I would still not give top pick for TDK - has proven very little ruck wise imo
Some also suggesting this is why we are crazy not offering Parish a huge deal
He’s no 1 clearance mid in the comp gets his own ball but can spread as well and only costs $$ ….5x$1m ?? Gotta go big to offset Cats etc
Then take picks to draft …. top up more talent …
We had money for DeGoey
Next year Hill Howard’s etc out if contract so further savings available

Re: David King say…
I would have thought Marshall was the last player we could afford to lose especially for a late first round draft pick which is what he’s worth.
