Expectations vs realities

Post: # 2015318Post older saint »

Want to do an anonymous exercise here . We all have favourites and we all have whipping boys ( i say high to Ben Long at this point in time :D ).

I do wonder though whether our expectations are real and also how many times the focus on a couple things by certain players are blinded by our bias'.

Here is a list of season stats for some of our players YTD. Be interested to see what peoples thought are on this( granted stats aren't everything) without knowing which players it applies to ( Very good, good, average, poor ). Within it i will put the AFL average also . Sure people can look these up if they like but without identities what are your thoughts?

per game (rounded up to .5):
21Disposals, 2.5Marks, 66.4% Disposal Eff, 4 tackles, 4 clearances, 4.5 inside 50s, 4 clangers
20.5D, 6.5M, 72.9%DE 2.5T, 1.5C, 4 I50s , 3 CL
18.5D, 3.5M, 70.3 DE, 2.5T, 1.5C, 2.5 I50s, 1.5CL,
14D, 3.5M, 65.29DE, 2.5T, 1.5C, 2 I50S, 2.5Cl
13.6D, 4M, 66.1 DE, 2T, .5C, 1.5 I50s , 2.5CL
11 D, 2M, 64.6% DE, 4T, 0C, 2.5 I50s, 2.5CL

Now i know these vary based on position and the league average is distorted as includes subs etc however point is these players above include some who cop it from fans a lot, some who are lauded.

Came up with this based on the discussions re Billings, Jones, McKenzie and Gresham - all have played enough footy now that the expectations should be set on performance and not potential, where they were drafted or what they are paid.

Our biggest opportunity is clearances and ground ball contested possession - those are the stats I'd be looking at.

<2 clearances from any stoppage attending midfielder is poor. The top 50 players in the competition are sitting above 3.5 clearances per game. Spread evenly that's about 3 players per team.

Our highest Contested Possession player is #14 in the comp, our second highest is a Ruckman, our third highest is a forward, and our fourth highest is #65 in the league.

Clearances are a similar story, #15, #32, #44, and #65 in the league.

Our opponents this week are:
Contested Possessions: #5, #8
Clearances: #3, #17

Fkn absolutely ridiculous that a competitive clearance beast is not getting his fair share of opportunities at senior level

Ross Lyon said that he'd rest Jack Bytel for the game against Sydney to help him recover from the concussion from 3 weeks ago. What was the bs excuse again for not playing him against Richmond on a night that would have suited his inside game?

Bytel's VFL stats:

7.4 clearances per game
3 tackles
29.8 disposals

What more can he do? Put him in the side (not the sub) and play him to his strengths.

He's played 1 game and been sub for 4 games. Average time on ground of 30%.

Jack Higgins
Dan Butler

Interesting many here smash Brynes for ball use - 70.3% efficiency, only 1.5 clangers, disposals above average

Byrnes is young and doing the work. Dan Butler works hard.

There are big gaps between consistent best efforts and output with Higgins and Ross but they can also deliver in spades in a tight spot.

Just depends how you look at it.
