Re: Side v Hawthorn
Interesting, yes I agree I would have liked to have seen some change but I doubt any of those changes would have changed the result. We were exposed in our midfield, exposed down back & struggled in the F50....hello Sicily!

Are we seeing the decline of Membrey?
I don't remember any games last year where he stamped his authority. He might've taken some saving marks in defence a few times.
Average 1.5 goals per game, accuracy of 51.5%
A real Sainter will pledge allegiance to the ❤ and despise the Pies, the Blues, and the Injectors.

Sadly it seems to be the case. It's worrying that he can't stamp himself even on a VFL game. Might be that he's really struggling to recover from the surgery he had in the offseason.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Wed 31 May 2023 8:06pmAre we seeing the decline of Membrey?

Seriously.
There were a few.
Start with the game against Carlton last season.
Brilliant performance.

Re: Side v Hawthorn
Didn’t Membrey do absolutely nothing in the first game he played at VFL level - came into the AFL team and made immediate impact, ordinary second game (playing as the No1 forward, a role he’s not suited to!) and got knocked out taking a gutsy mark
Rarely Will Membrey dominate VFL - he’s not a 195cm power forward that can have the ball kicked on his head and mark
He’s a 188cm leading mid size forward who relies a bit on delivery, quick ball movement and space - which is often not the case in the VFL
Especially on a cold windy night at Moorabbin
He had the number 1 key defender and was actually outsized- except for the contested mark - goal that he kicked

Re: Side v Hawthorn
Membrey wasn't starved of opportunity, he dropped marks, couldn't kick straight and wasn't getting the delivery he requires. The only difference he may have made would be if Ratten was coaching and he was sent back to intercept. Membrey has a bit of work to do.B.M wrote: ↑Wed 31 May 2023 9:02pm Didn’t Membrey do absolutely nothing in the first game he played at VFL level - came into the AFL team and made immediate impact, ordinary second game (playing as the No1 forward, a role he’s not suited to!) and got knocked out taking a gutsy mark

Re: Side v Hawthorn
It was the likes of Steele and Ross, our senior centre square players, who did just not perform
And their lack of performance was exacerbated by the loss of Clark in the early minutes of the game
We lost at the coal face - only Crouch standing up
This put pressure on everywhere because Hawthorn were initiating and we were labouring in the chase (as Lyon said, if we had won we would have dead set pinched it)
In regards the Hawthorn defender, he fed off the inexperience of our forward line, where we had Caminiti, Phillipou and then Sharman (in place of Clark), all with only a handful of games
We badly missed Clark and Owens(who only a handful of games into his career has become a monitor of team performance)
It is how we improve our centre square presence and, by extension the overall contest so we have the ball in hand and are the initiators
Not chasing

Re: Side v Hawthorn
Yes, the double teaming of Marshall hurt granted
But games are won “roving” to a losing ruck
The value of Marshall is as a utility player who contests the ruck hit outs - he is an unique footballer
And he carries our Ruck division, the support available from Campbell who is an insurance player and the developing Heath
In a game last year we rucked Battle - and won

Re: Side v Hawthorn
There’s losing the ruck - that’s one thing
And oppo getting silver service
That’s hard to combat
GC and Hawthorn (and for many years Melbourne) get the benefit of a dominant ruckman. Means CS Mids can be proactive and move through the stoppages
We had to set up defensively - therefore be reactive

Re: Side v Hawthorn
That game?
AF points 76
Disposals 8 kicks, 2 HB, 5 marks, 4 goals
TOG 84%
I would say this is the exception rather than the rule.
His games of 3-4 goals happen once or twice a year. Not enough for someone in the leadership group

I’ll grant you this. He needs to improve and he’s probably not going to get any better because of age etc.

Geezus we struggle to let go
IF he and Ross are pushed out of this side this year it means we’ve got kids in who offer more
Sure Membrey will bob up and play odd good game but is that really our future?
Is he really in our next premiership side?
Keep playing kids
Forget wins now who cares we are making up numbers

Re: Side v Hawthorn
It would be a shame if we've seen the last of his quality. He's only 29, by comparison Mihocek is 30 and still playing sensational footy. At his best Membrey was a really dangerous player for us and would add a lot to our current side. I think he's a dimension that our forward line is lacking, but it's really beyond me how a bloke with his quality is getting only one goal in the VFL. It must be injuries.Teflon wrote: ↑Thu 01 Jun 2023 6:38pmNot futurelewdogs wrote: ↑Wed 31 May 2023 8:11pmSadly it seems to be the case. It's worrying that he can't stamp himself even on a VFL game. All sides need their experienced players - the next generation being the cream on the cake as they develop and push past the experienced brigade
Such is life
You are only ever as good as your last performance
So the question is who of our experienced brigade (so nearing 30 years of age and over) are competition leading performers, leading our younger brigade?
I would put that the reason we have the recent past we have is because of a lack of competition leading performers among our experienced players - and why the loss of Hannebery, Carlisle and Ryder (all recruited from other Clubs to fill the hole) has hurt us as it has
Yes, we added Hill - but he was on his Pat Malone
From there injuries to Clark, Coffield, Billings, Gresham, Paton who have all missed large chunks of football (as high Draft Picks) have hurt
Then you get to McCartin
The responsibility is falling to King, Wanganeen-Milera, Owens, Phillipou, Windhager et al
They should be the cream on the cake
The demographics of our List, hey?
But we are now better positioned than we have been in the recent past (since we were last competitive)

No internal system to develop leaders ?
(If players reach 30 and are not on field leaders, cut?)
So no hope, as when it gets tough too many become the chook graphic Aeon uses.
Depressing, but explains some things.
