Interesting stat on SEN
Daniel Hoyne from Champion data :-
In the past 4 weeks the Saints were top 4 in defence and are now 13th. From memory Wilkie went from 4th to the 20's, Battle moved from about 23rd to 29th but Howard went from 13th to the 80's. When asked if that was due to less team defence the guy said no, he was continually losing one on one contests.
The other was Gresham's performance in the midfield, he went from one of the top ranked to last. We need more from this guy.
I still think we're a good side but there's a few that continually go missing when the heat is on. I don't mind losing when the whole team has left everything out on the field but I'm not sure some can look their team mates in the eye.

Re: Interesting stat on SEN
Thanks for sharing that
Fox said similar re our defence slide but did t know individual numbers so that’s interesting
I think it’s the inconsistency within players….maybe we just overrate them on a few good games ???
Need to get some more youth in imo

Someone may have mentioned Gresham was disappointed
Lyon does not know how to use him imo
Needs to take a look at Longmire’s use of Papley

Wilkie hasn't been the same since Steele came back in and relieved him of the captaincy.
Hard for Howard to defend when the FF gets bullet passes to the chest.

What bullet passes. He continually loses his footing and is turned inside out. He looks like he plays with his shoelaces tied. He's crap.Jacks Back wrote: ↑Wed 31 May 2023 7:34am Wilkie hasn't been the same since Steele came back in and relieved him of the captaincy.

Re: Interesting stat on SEN
The clear difference in our performances from Rounds 1-8 to Rounds 9-11 is all in the middle.
Our inability to win the ball cleanly from centre bounces and stoppages, combined with our lack of immediate spread is making it very easy for our opposition to control the play.
Rounds 1-8 we were moderate for clearances, sitting +0.4 per game, ranked 8th in the competition.
Rounds 9-11 we are poor, sitting -5.0 per game, ranked 16th in the competition.
Further to that, our ability to score from clearances and stoppages has been nullified.
Rounds 1-8 we were 8th for scores for, and 16th for scores against from clearances.
Round 9-11 we are ranked 13th for scores for, and 3rd for scores against.
Almost all of our key mids are down on their clearance output from the first 8 weeks – Steele (-31%), Ross (-23%), Crouch (-4%), Marshall (-2%), Clark (-17%), Byrnes (-38%), Wood (-50%), Hill (-29%).
Only Gresham (+67%) , Phillipou (+33%), Sinclair (+22%) & Owens (+5%) have shown improvement.
Once the opposition win the ball, we allow them to spread and retain possession too easily.
Round 1-8 we were good for uncontested possessions, sitting at +3.7 per game, ranked 7th.
Rounds 9-11 we are poor for uncontested possessions, sitting at -43.4 per game, ranked 18th.
We did allow the opposition to maintain possession earlier in the season, but mainly in our back half. Now it’s happening everywhere.
Since Round 9, the number of uncontested possessions conceded in our defensive half has more than doubled.
To summarize, the last three matches have seen our ability to take clean ball from stoppages completely diminish, but it seems we’re still set up to lock the ball in, thus when it’s cleared by our opposition, we’re unable to defend or even create a contest.

Is it a coincidence that these numbers have happened since Nick Walsh quit?

Any idea what’s happened to scoring from turnover?

I wish Gresham was half as good & half as invested as Papley is with his ability & intensity.

Because, there was a change of strategy. That's a change. Not a coincidence.

Re: Interesting stat on SEN
Jones, Billings, Bytel, Mackenzie, Coffield and others, have struggled to stay on the field for years. That never changed under Walsh.
It looks like Mason Wood has been doing his own program and a number of the new recruits have been mentored by him and are developing quickly.
Walsh got everyone who could stay fit, really fit but he didn't inherit the list. The injuries have been pretty bad to players we couldn't afford to start this year injured.

Same observation made in our household .
Hawks had no issue running over the top of us - we look to have lost our fitness edge and that ability to grind away at teams late in the game.

Howard is not definitely not an AFL level fullback. Atm, he’s barely an AFL level defender - period.Annoyedsaint wrote: ↑Wed 31 May 2023 3:33am Howard losing one on ones….
Well tickle me pink.
He’s a dud and a half.
Problem being, who is there to replace him? We’re stuck with him until we get a quality tall.

Re: Interesting stat on SEN
Our fitness edge was never going to be sustainable- sone sides start pre season slower (cats do it every year , Dogs notorious fir not prioritising running)
The difference is our senior midfield leaders have badly dropped away - stats tell you that we couldn’t win a clearance against Hawks
That’s not cause we weren’t fitter - that’s down to the ability of the individual to deliver when the heat goes up
Ours can’t
They did exactly the same thing last year - Nick Walsh was there then??????

Another misnomer in footy
Fitness staff control injuries
The fittest guys sometimes get injured, the most unfit sometimes don’t.
When you train any muscle group to it extremes- injury may happen.
Fitness staff prepare athletes for games.
Rehab guys manage injuries
