Hill - Position

Post: # 2003272Post B.M »

A bit was made about Hill being moved back to his Wing position this season where he plays his best footy.

However, Hill has hardly spent anytime on the Wing and has started as a HHF in every game - last week inexplicably alongside Nick Daicos - closest they would have got was shaking hands before the siren!

Byrnes has been preferred in the wing role alongside Wood

Windhager also lost his position as a mid to Hunter and has found himself across HF with a few mid minutes.

I think Windhager needs to go back to tagging - whether that be a defensive HF or defensive Mid (inside or out)

I know we play a system - but after the Daicos debacle - I believe there is still times where a run with player is necessary

I would’ve thought Windhager would’ve been perfect for Daicos?!

I thought Hill has been very good this year, though against Collingwood he was back to his Ratten form.

Though Collingwood didn't give us nearly as much room as previous opponents.

Agree totally, I was suprised that Nick Daicos was given so much freedom to roam far and wide, he arguably was the difference between the 2 teams on the day. In his post match press conference Ross Lyon conceded that maybe the coaches made a mistake to not tag Daicos, relying too much on their system to get the points.

If Brad Hill had kicked two of his three shots on goal the strategy would be viewed as a master stroke. Sadly he missed. I bet he (and the coaches) are still hurting (as am I).

What I liked about the end of the game is Ross looked very happy and upbeat . He's seen the way our depleted side weren't that far off one of the best and has realised that we're capable of going deep into September.
We played Our game , we were sloppy but with a growing confidence we have tons of upside .
The game was like an old fashioned shoot-out , only with two defensive minded coaches you don't get too many goals .
We as the up and comers know what we need to improve so that next time (hopefully a final) the result will be different.

Totally agree BM. Not tagging Daicos was a major blunder by our coaches, he basically won them the game. For he to get 42 possessions and over 800m gained is absolutely ridiculous for our coaches to sit and watch it, then do nothing.

Some have suggested that we didnt want to show our hand, but I dont think that is rational. RTB and Banger made an major error starting Hill on him amd not tagging him.

Not only did Hill have misses on goal, but Wood also.

Deep in defence we were forced to kick to their numbers on occasion, also costing us vital goals.

No doubt the lessons will be learned.

We will see if there are any "casualties" at selection.

And on Daicos and Lyon's references to him bringing his own ball, why not Butler who was largely not sighted?

We had a few who did not contribute enough.

I would have a role for Windhager every game!!! Where necessary

Whether that be a mid/or a defensive HF

If he has no role - start as sub and come on in the third to use his running power

One day Windhager will be a great mid in his own right but until then - learn from the best - like Steele did

Why didn’t we change strategies during the game? Windy was marginalized and Daicos N was going nuts!
Too late at the press conference to say sorry to Saints fans
Please do it during the game.

You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!

100% Daicos won it for them. Check out the last 10 seconds. He dives on the ball, holds it in and kills the game. Then gets up pretending he copped one on on the scone.

Too bad diving on the ball and locking it up isn't a free kick....

Daicos averaged 20 metres per possession and got 300 more metres than anyone else, 31 of them were uncontested, he didn't enter the forward 50 and didn't hit the scoreboard and was credited with 1 goal assist from 8 inside 50's.
He is also credited with 6 turnovers but only 4 score involvements. He had 6 contested possessions.

No clearances and not much evidence of anything other than good disposal and easy possessions. If he wants to actually be involved in the play, then it might be an idea to tag him. But the spare player down field, sending the ball back in his direction without a score 38/42 times, will do me.

Looks like a real debacle too me.
