The blind turn by Mattaes Phillipou
I thought it was worth its own thread. You don't see it much these days, the only other I can recall in modern times was in the 2019 GF by Marlion Pickett - in his first game. It took Mattaes five games. It was common back in the 50s and 60s, generally from the best players. Steele Sidebottom looked a bit perplexed. It's a pity it didn't result in a goal.

Love his confidence and his want to be ‘the man’
I also thought the Collingwood pressure got to him a couple of times, but that’s to be expected from a 5 game player.

Re: The blind turn by Mattaes Phillipou
Fantastic to see him show signs of brilliance in a big game this early in his career. Crazy to think that during the pre-season most us thought he’d take a while to develop at Sandy, or whatever. Well, he seems to be taking to the big league like a duck to water!

Re: The blind turn by Mattaes Phillipou
Good call
I think last week he was being tackled and managed to reach over the tackler and handball direct to one of ours for a goal
I just thought ….kid doesn’t panic…
And when he lines up for goal….dead eye
Very impressive

Some of his moves are a bit too quick for some of our players as well.
The kid has some real talent and I suspect his ranking in a hindsight draft in a few years will be a lot higher than pick ten.

I remember watching Les Foote when he was, I think, Captain Coach of the saints in the 50s.
His skills were like the poos and far superior to the rest of the team, as was his brain.
I remember his lightning quick hand passes bouncing off the chests of unsuspecting saints players.

Re: The blind turn by Mattaes Phillipou
His awareness of what’s around him in congestion is elite. Always finds a player with a handball when tackled .
It’s not a knock on the kid - he is after all the youngest player on an AFL list, but I think he hesitates and pulls out of contested marking situations occasionally when he is actually in good position. That will change as he gets a harder body and confidence to take the body contact.
He is going to be a very close to being our best player by the end of the 2025 season.

I think a lot of you saw this...
A few weeks ago, Harves said about Mattaes that
'When I sit him down to go over his vision'
(I assume it's a video package of him during a game)
Harves says before he has a chance to say anything, Mattaes starts talking and giving his own critique.
Like he has the brains to evaluate himself.
Not arrogance, just a desire to be the best he can be.
Also Harves reckons he's like Pendlebury

Dal Santo versus Melbourne 2004. It's when I thought, "Wow, this kid might be special."

Re: The blind turn by Mattaes Phillipou
It’s interesting Owens/Caminiti probably getting more press and both are bulls and great
But Philippou in traffic (sign of a great player imo) just does things to set up a teammate that make you think his footy IQ is much much higher..
I can see why Harvs would say Pendles like

Re: The blind turn by Mattaes Phillipou
He's handballed to a teammate several times where they've scored a goal. Mason Wood, Higgins (I think) and Byrnes goal in the final 3 mins vs Filth? Each time he was being grabbed IIRCTeflon wrote: ↑Tue 18 Apr 2023 10:54pm It’s interesting Owens/Caminiti probably getting more press and both are bulls and great

Re: The blind turn by Mattaes Phillipou
Caminiti and Owens are both naturally, more physically developed, Matteas is a big kid. He is displaying knowledge and skill, the physical aspects are good but they will get much, much better.

Re: The blind turn by Mattaes Phillipou
I missed those comments by Robert Harvey - that he regards Phillipou as similar to Pendlebury is very high praise indeed, they're both about the same height (191cm) but Phillipou to me looks to play with a little more aggression than Pendles.WellardSaint wrote: ↑Tue 18 Apr 2023 10:22pm I think a lot of you saw this...

For the record, Pendlebury was pick #5 in 2005 and played just 9 games in his first season 2006, whereas I would be surprised if Phillipou doesn't play at least 18-20 in his first year.
I agree with the view by others that Phillipou will become St Kilda's best player in the next few years, a future captain no less....

That Spin n Ping was very nice - Pity the shot missed though.
