Saints TV with Leigh Montagna
It's a very long podcast but I found it well worth watching Jake and his mates at Saints TV commemorate their 100th episode by inviting Leigh Montagna to come along and talk about both his career, and his views on the Saints in 2023.
Joey is an accomplished media personality and I like the way he analyses the teams when he appears on Fox Footy, he is straight down the line and substantiates his opinions with hard facts and stats.
Of most interest to me was hearing what he had to say about St Kilda recent and current history.
You can hear for yourself what he thinks went wrong post 2012, he mentioned things I had not heard before.
But his opinion about the return of the old guard: Lyon, Hayes, Harvey and Goddard were really important, because he believes that both at St Kilda 2007-2011 and with many of the toip teams today, a really important ingredient in the success of the teams is having a strong core of good high qualityplayers there to "induct" the new recruits. For example, in 2003 St Kilda had blokes like Aaron Hamill, Fraser Gehrig, Nathan Burke, Justin Peckett, Max Hugdhton, Austin Jones and others to mentor the young fellows Riewoldt, Koschitske, Ball, Clarke, Montagna, Dal Santo, Fisher, Goddard, all of whom went on to achieve elite status. They helped to pass on the traditions and culture of Moorabbin over the many decades.
All of this broke down after Goddard went to the Bombers (2013), Dal left for North (2014), Riewoldt and Montagna were tapped on the shoulder (2018).
So in essence none of the teams since have had any dyed in the wool St Kilda senior Saints players to pass on the baton, and I'm quite sure that has been a very big factor in the lack of success in the past decade.
No wonder then that Andrew Bassat and the Board went back to the drawing board, because it is very likely that new director Jason Blake would have expressed his view, and that of his former team mates from the successful era, that the club no longer possessed even a single individual on the playing list that had any connection to St Kilda's past, nor in the coaching ranks.
I am absolutely convinced now that bringing back Lyon, Hayes, Harvey and Goddard was a really important and wise decision. They will get the current players fired up to achieve success, and with Windhager, Wanganeen-Milera, Owens and Phillipou, plus Caminiti, Van Es, Adams and Keeler, the club is at last developing a strong core of young players to build a successful team!
Congratulations and many thanks Saints TV!!!

When one door closes and another door opens, you are probably in prison..
Sometimes, someone unexpected comes into your life out of nowhere, makes your heart race, and changes you forever. We call those people cops.
My luck is like a bald guy who just won a comb.

Re: Saints TV with Leigh Montagna
Yes agree agree agree with all posters, terrific stuff. All power to the Saints TV guys.
An aside: it makes me surprisingly upset to reflect of the possibility/probability that Rob Harvey was rejected as coach of our/his beloved Saints by Jonny come latelys with no roots in the club. No wonder he was more than normally upset about the rejection. Also no wonder we have been going nowhere for over a decade. Always thought running sporting teams has significant differences to running a business. Similar principles of course in general, but that emotional tie/commitment with what is being done is so important. And thanks again Mr Finnis and all concerned for bring us home.
