One of the worst games of footy I've ever been to.

This is the infamous draw yes?

Was at this too. I actually thought this was an incredible game considering how green we were. IIRC, we had some absurd number like 14 players under 20 games and possibly even had to list an injured player as an emergency as that’s how dire selection was.

Despite that we still held it together for a draw in a game we should have won with the infamous Daniel Wulf behind and a young Dal’s attempted long bomb after the siren that came up well short.

This was the birthing game.

A difficult birth.

St Kilda's new era began that day.

A bit overdramatic?

But consider we were getting a hammering on the field.
Dragged over the coals in the press.

This game!

I saw it last night for the first time.

1) Beaten by Geelong by 122 pts the previous week
2) Ravaged by injury
3) Forward line Swartch (sp) and a 'Oliver'..I had to look that one up

AND

MRE MIGHTY MILNE..HE was electric!
Check out the skills! And the run and burn. Several times slipping over,...after a long run and chase..2nd, 3rd effort and absolutely Ablett-like skills! Incredible

Riewoldt..glorious marks!

Soldiers like Brett Voss. Lawrence was there too.

Special mention to Robert Walls and the commentators...very good..

also notice gerard whately's hair and don't forget to take your finasteride pills today.

They kicked more goals in the last 5 minutes than they did in the first three quarters.

Oliver?
All I know (after my 19 seconds of research) was that he played like 10 games over three season, went SANFL? , then VFA or Vic Country.

He took a lovely mark in the first quarter and I thought - uh oh? Is this Cooper Sharman?
But he didn’t do much after.

We had no forward line but GT was being smart. He played Eade’s game and he ‘out-Eaded’ Eade!
One step ahead!! Ugly as a tin shed in a Japanese garden, but it worked!! Sydney’s coaching box must have been steaming!! The press were going bonkers. Brilliant by St Kilda. Pouring honey into clock gears and making it a slog. I don’t realize that this sort of thing was going on back then.

I think BM is referring to the result as we missed the second priority pick by half a game which would have been Daniel Wells in all likelihood… and pbly he was the missing ingredient over the 09-10 era.

I always thought this criticism was silly as frankly not winning any of the other 5 games we picked up that year would have had the same result but whatever.

Oliver I remember. I had a very strong dislike (in terms of rating the player, not on a personal level). He was meant to be a young ruckman but was mikes off it from the get go and really just wasn’t competitive.

Random memory but I formed the view that on the first few games, all a player needs to do is demonstrate that they have something worth persevering in order to earn they right to get games based on merits. A strong mark, a big tackle, great defensive efforts, a nice kick.
Oliver was never near it.

My recollection was that he had a few fans here at the time but I didn’t get it

Oh..I see. Thanks.

Was tanking a big deal in '02? Was that before Melbourne really, really took the piss?

Edit: And absolutely insane roller-coaster season. Lost to Freo and Melbourne by 3 pts (away) Lost to Geelong 122, Essendon 99, Collingwood 80? etc.,

...and North finished 7th! How'd they get Wells anyway?
