Saints heart and soul players
from the age.com.au
"AFL: The rapid transformation of Jack Steele into not only one of the AFL’s elite midfielders, but the Saints’ spiritual leader has been one of the more noteworthy storylines of the past couple of years. Steele sets the standards and lives up to those standards every time he sets foot on a footy ground. With two All-Australians and two best-and-fairests in his back pocket, he commands respect in everything that he does.
AFLW: Sharpshooter Kate Shierlaw and captain Hannah Priest are perhaps the more notable faces of the team but it’s Bianca Jakobsson who embodies so much of the Saints’ fighting spirit. The 29-year-old took a break from the game in 2020 and wasn’t sure if she would return, but then slotted straight into the team in 2021. She plays her heart out for the team each week, which earned her the club’s best and fairest last season. And you’d be hard-pressed to find a game in the last year where she wasn’t one of the best.

Spiritual leader, best player and sets the standard
But should be replaced as Captain according to some experts on here?!
I rate Steele in the top 3 captains in the AFL
Two way runner - courageous as fk

Yes the notion of replacing Jack Steele as Captain, as touted by some on here, is possibly the stupidest suggestion I have witnessed on this site.
Rugby League would have to be the stupidest, most moronic and over rated game of all time.

Well would come close, after the continuous bagging of players like Hunter Clark. No E FFShappy feet wrote: ↑Sun 08 Jan 2023 3:31pmYes the notion of replacing Jack Steele as Captain, as touted by some on here, is possibly the stupidest suggestion I have witnessed on this site.

Re: Saints heart and soul players
I don't know what the remit of a Captain is these days.
Sets a great example?
Steele 9/10
Extremely good.
Set by example?
Steele ???/10
As I say, I don't know what the remit is,
But I will say this,
Our players did not follow that example.
On-field leadership was woeful as a whole.
Not unlike this forum, where we all try to set a good example, but somehow, it all falls apart.

Re: Saints heart and soul players
How many wins vs losses did Steele play in last season?
He played the front half which we won 8 from 11
Missed 5 with injury
Have to look at the numbers
But Steele seemed to be doing his job as Captain

Re: Saints heart and soul players
Jack didn’t play rounds 10 and 11 when we won against Adelaide and then North Melbourne, just before the bye
He missed the losses against Brisbane and Essendon and returned (underdone and too early imo) against the Swans which we also lost
He played a total of 18 games for the year and it was an even split. We won 9 and lost 9 with him playing. Doesn’t tell you much and probably more indicative of the team’s fortunes overall for 2022
He usually has an influence in games and his numbers are elite. Rarely out of the votes.
I think he’d have gone close to another TBM if he didn’t get injured. Absolute role model
What we need from Steeley as a captain is a little more on field talking when things aren’t going our way.
That doesn’t mean he wins games all by himself. Make an effort to get in the ear of a team mate. He just needs to learn how to inspire others and learn to show leadership when required
Make an effort to change momentum and take control instead of letting others (including coaches do it for you).

Agree, is his area of needed improvement. Has probably taken a season to understand as Captain he can't just look after his own game.

Captains who lead by example inspired me
Not ones who made speeches or tried to tell people what to do… they just s*** me!
Steele is the obvious captain
Look elsewhere for issues imo

Vortex would find fault with JC if he was wearing red white and black.

Re: Saints heart and soul players
Yes, he has to lead by example and perform and do all the physical stuff, but when you have a young group and some guys like Higgins, Butler, Hill, or Wood from other clubs who have had poor form at times, then he has to do more than just look after his own game.
It doesn’t have to be lectures and sermons
Sometimes it’s just a look in the eyes and a nod….or sometimes it’s your captain walking up to you and saying ‘I trust you’ when you’re lining up for goal. I want to see him walk up to Max when Max has kicked 4 behinds in a row and tell Max ‘you got this’.
I’ve seen him stand back at times and let things unfold. He needs to get around his team mates and they will respond

Captains at times need to be visible in leading from front
Steele has sulked it up at times this year (I can understand when you don’t believe in the game plan your cuddly coach is employing) but no doubt there are times when he needed to step up for the team
It’s not about whispering in the showers …sometimes you have to demonstrate leadership overtly

Re: Saints heart and soul players
Steele sulked
Yeah right, that is absurd and the most ridiculous thing ever written on SS in 20 years!
I’d like you to come up with one example?
He is actually the last player you can bag, you do realise that
Or do his 2 B&Fs and Dual AA jackets mean FA too??
He actually earned the most Brownlow votes in the AFL in 2021/2022
Led the league in tackles and is rated the best 2 way midfielder in the game
And he’s sulking - when does he get time between his 28 disposals, 8 clearances, and 7 tackles a game???
FFS
What a joke

Re: Saints heart and soul players
Haven’t got a problem with Steel as captain but wouldn’t mind seeing Wilkie as a co captain, as he’s far more vocal but also leads by example.
We need to change the leadership group a bit to try & get more impact & accountability on game day.

Teffers
You need to take a look at the stats, because just watching the game isn’t giving you a clue
Steele is a gun who works his guts out both offensively and defensively
Love an example of sulking that you suggest?!

Sorry Marty but you only see stats
Steele is a gun - again not the topic so knock yourself out convincing all of that moot point
I’ll get back k to you when I track down “sulky stats” cause I know you’ll understand those.
