What a brilliant draft - well done Saints!
In one draft we have added -
1. Mattaes Phillipou an outstanding midfield/medium forward prospect, who will be the best in his draft year.
2. James Van Es a 197cm huge athletic key defender who is almost ready to play.
3. Olli Hotton a super quick highly rated goal kicking midfielder/forward.
4. Isaac Keeler a 198cm Ryder clone (ruckman/forward), who is capable of special things.
We might even get to take a rookie tomorrow and add Angus McLennan as a Cat B rookie.
Brilliant stuff by Toce, Gallagher and co!

Re: What a brilliant draft - well done Saints!
So easy to get excited but definitely a good group of kids selected !
All four should get game time next year, some even early in the season
Coffield, Hayes, Clark all back
Windy, Owens, NWM - year two
Big year for Heath
Can Alison make it ... remember McKenzie getting a new contract, now a regular
Adams ?
Bytel ?
And of course RTB, Hayes, Harvey, Goddard
Can't wait for the preseason games, Round 1 and the years ahead !

Re: What a brilliant draft - well done Saints!
These selections give balance to the list.
It's been a long time since we picked a tall player with the mobility and moves of a mid like Keeler. I can understand the comparison to Ryder
The speed, height, vertical leap, and strength of Van Es gives us a lot to work with and with an AFL-ready body, could slot in early if we lose talls to injury.
Hotton looks like a Jack Sinclair type to me. Leg speed, quick lateral movement and neat skills. Could easily have gone within the top 25, so we did as well as we could with the Ben Long trade
Then there's Phillipou . Highly ranked all year in that pick 2 to pick 7 range. Let's hope the hype is justified . Not your bog standard midfield type, but someone who can play inside, outside, and forward with equal effect.

Yep, change the coach, get in a bunch of new recruits and this place is now humming. Unbelievable forum mood swing in such a short space of time.Saintmike65 wrote: ↑Wed 30 Nov 2022 8:34am What an incredible 6 weeks to be a saints person.. who would of thought we’d have such positive vibes after the shocking second half of this season.

Re: What a brilliant draft - well done Saints!
Just watched Keelers highlights....bloody hell....this kid could be anything ...I wonder what the knock on him is because those highlights look as impressive as anyone's in the top 10.
Great draft....pretty exciting u 23 side now.

Start of U18 season coach had a very strong discussion re this
If application stayed same was a chance to be gone
I suspect application//concentration to work ethic will need to be closely watched

It is important to benchmark this thread . It may turn out that these blokes can’t play. In years to come people - with the benefit of hindsight - might say “ Look, we picked some dud at pick 10 and we missed a Brownlow medallist at 11. The recruiters are idiots”. That is an invalid argument. The recruiters don’t have a crystal ball. Judge them now , or not at all.
I reckon they have done a great job. If you disagree, speak now, or forever hold your peace . Now it is up to the lads and the coaching staff- the recruiters have done their job.

Re: What a brilliant draft - well done Saints!
It's a box of chocolates, the draft. You know the rest. But we did as good or better than most. We could also be saying in years to come, and equally could be true, this crop of draftees were instrumental in winning us a premiership.Sainter_Dad wrote: ↑Wed 30 Nov 2022 9:11amStop making senseGeorge27 wrote: ↑Wed 30 Nov 2022 9:05am It is important to benchmark this thread . Re: What a brilliant draft - well done Saints!
Now wait for the video summary to come out.
Drinking game not specific to any players though:
- We are wrapped....
- We had him much higher on our draft charts
- Couldn't believe he was available at that pick
- He has enormous upside
Really mean:
- its the last pick in the top 10 with a clear top 10 , surely we can't be wrong
- The kid we really wanted went 2 picks earlier
- Athletic but really enjoys life

Re: What a brilliant draft - well done Saints!
I am VERY happy with the past couple of drafts.
In a couple of years (maybe next year) a midfield of Crouch, Steele (remember he is only mid 20s), Clark, Windhager, Owens, Wanganeen-Milera, RoMa, Keeler, Phillipou, Van Es and Hotton

Re: What a brilliant draft - well done Saints!
If RTB is up to his old form we are unlikely to see any of these picks for a long while and probably last years crop will be relegated to Sandy who should be more competitive next season,

Re: What a brilliant draft - well done Saints!
I am hoping that RTB has had a change of heart - he has certainly copped it in the media for his lack of ultimate success - but I also think that the team he inherited first time round did not need much Youth Development - it was ticking along nicely
The same cannot be said for this team - and if Owens/Windhager/Wanganeen Milera get relegated - there WILL be questions asked

ESPN actually wrote an article praising us for once!
Us & Bulldogs only teams to be rated A+ for selections made in draft!

Re: What a brilliant draft - well done Saints!
That argument was easier to justify when the core group of players was Hayes, Goddard, Riewoldt, Dal, Monty, Ball, Milne, Fisher etc and the whole range of good players that were a class below
Point is that opportunities are far more available as the mantra is develop/turnover as opposed to challenge right away

Re: What a brilliant draft - well done Saints!
Ha
I remember that was when Internet was now affordable and fast enough for me re-connect with Australian radio from Japan.
So I tried a Breakfast Show, MMM with Mcquire, The Footsray Ruckman dude and the porky comedian.
Damn Luke Darcy and Mick someone.
The Mick guy was funny. He laughed his arse off at that even though it was risqué and the world was rapidly changing. I thought he was fighting a tear-guard action (like many comedians at the time, to defend laughter in the severe new age of cancel culture)
But anyway, I remember driving in the country with Dad. We stopped and picked up some fresh hot pies and soft drink. They looked so good. Dad said wait for a while and drink some water first, then the you’ll eat more slowly and feel more satisfied for longer. I though f that! Let’s eat em now - while they are hot and while the flavor is sharp.
So my ditty to temper the euphoria is in service of a lasting and satisfying draft.
A good cold draft, for a hard earned thirst ..
Matter of fact
Oh dear..
You're quite brilliant Shane, yeah..terrific!
