Former plaýers as coaches
Leigh Matthews- Hawks, Brissie coach
Clarko- Norf player, Hawks coach
Chris Scott- Lions man, Cats coach
Craig McRae- Lions player, Pies coach
You don't need to be a favourite son to succeed.
(McRae not yet though)
You just need to believe in yourself and have the brains and skills, and leadership qualities.
Why would Lenny +Harves be brilliant just cos they used to bleed for the FQF?
Will they have some magic beans or something?
It's romantic to think of a former player bringing success.
But it's no guarantee.
Sorry to bring it down a bit, but just remember our players who aren't really A Grade-
Jones
Billings
Howard
Paton
Webster
Coffield
Ross (can be incredibly valuable, but he's no Pemdlebury or Dal Santo)
Butler
Higgins
Cordy
Hill (only because he's disinterested)
Those guys have reached their ceilings and we know what they bring. No surprises (apart from Ross, who came of age in our 8-3)
We're not flush with talent.
We have young ones who will make their mark, but the guys above will hold us back like anchors.

Re: Former plaýers as coaches
Ah, yes. "Things". Other than the ability to play football at the highest level of skill. To run, chase, tackle and fight until your heart feels like until it will burst out of your chest. And then keep going harder. To be selfless at all times for your team mates. To be able to play on through pain and injury. To be admired for your personal qualities on and off the field.
Sure, some things have changed but the ones I have listed pre-date 1966 and have not changed. If a player thinks he can lessen their effort in any one of these Ross will have his guts for garters.

Re: Former plaýers as coaches
What about skill and execution?
Without these 2 things, a player can run themselves ragged but will just be chasing their own tails.

Trying to think of favourite sons that actually have coached flags in the AFL era...
Matthews (Coll, Bris)...No
Joyce (Haw)...No
Malthouse (WCE, Coll)...No
Sheedy (Ess)...No
Parkin (Car)...No
Blight (Adel)...No
Pagan (Nth)...No
Williams (Port)...Sort of
Roos (Syd)...Yes
Worsfold (WCE)...Yes
Thompson (Geel)...No
Clarkson (Haw)...No
Longmire (Syd)...No
Simpson (WCE)...No
Bevo (WB)...Sort of
Hardwick (Rich)...No
Goodwin (Melb)...No
Scott (Geel)...No
Not many in that list are favourite sons of the club they coached.

Re: Former plaýers as coaches
The Essendon coach to lead them to their last 4 premierships didn’t play a single game for that club.

Re: Former plaýers as coaches
I guess Luke Beveridge is the last coach who played with the club he led to a premiership. But he only played 31 games with them.

I think Carlton fans also try to forget that he coached them, too.
