The AFL finally listens to the fans

Post: # 1980415Post Sainternist »

That’s right, folks - no muzak to be piped from the PA speakers after each goal during this Saturday’s grand final.

But will they continue to play muzak next year? I bloody hope not. This is an American sports scourge which has somehow, insidiously crept into all pro sports worldwide.

I Hate the Music (a JPY special) but, the only thing is they wait 45 seconds (or more?) now so the TV can run their ads and then they can replay the last goal when they come back on, instead of just getting the ball back to the centre and bouncing it straight away.

I'd be happy if they dumped all those gimmicks.
The stupid half time competitions where some bogan is constantly yelling at you and trying to stimulate the crowd (for some reason), while you'd prefer a bit of quiet so you could chat with your mates.
Seems to be a constant competition for attention.

I would like it if they would go up and post the scores from the other game or games being played on the scoreboard. As for the music between goals and flashing lights, well those flashing lights could trigger an epileptic seizure and if that happens, AFl may face a bit of a pay-out.

Think of me long enough to make a memory.

It may sound cynical but I am wondering if dropping the blaring music after goals for the grand final is actually motivated by the AFL listening to fans or if the prospect of the royalty fees for broadcasting these songs to a massive audience is part of the decision making? Truly becoming very cynical.

I also HATE the gimmicks and noise and flashing advertisements etc. Nothing is sacred, ball, centre square, gurnseys, atmosphere. Anything to scrape in a buck.

The atmosphere at a footy game with crowd and ball thumping is a rich experience. Nothing quite like the build up and the crescendo of the crowd just before the first bounce and murmurs in the break as discussions break out about on field incidents etc. Noise, ads, announcements kills all of that. (Announcements about a car in the car park that has left their lights on accepted)

Oh, I don’t blame you for feeling cynical. It’s definitely warranted. You could well be onto something. They seem to be motivated purely by the bottom line.

I did actually think Waverly when I wrote that.

Not in the era of Gill, anyway.
