1997 GF

Post: # 1980307Post D.B.Cooper »

Watched this on Kayo the other night, I was there live but don’t recall watching a replay before.

A few observations and comparisons to current footy.

Style of footy
Fast free flowing one on one style game.
Little umpiring interference compared to current footy.
No or very little hold it up go slow.
Players given an eternity to get rid of the ball when tackled.
Very lenient with 50’s only the very blatant paid.
Good skills, not like the 60’s/70’s matches when you watch them now the skills are low.

Coaching
Blight appeared to have it all over Stan.
Half backs running down the ground kicking goals and we had no answer to Jarman starting at the center bounce then running forward or to McLoed at half back/wing.
Adelaide lost Sampson & Jamieson injured before half time but in those days there was little rotations so we did not take advantage.

Players
Shanna’s was a good player who could play tall and small but the poor guy had somewhere between 7 or 8 kicked on him that day with Allen 3 of his five and Jarman 4 or more of his bag.

Harvey and Burke played as you’d expect.
Young Barry Hall tore the game open in the 2nd.
Very disappointing games from Saints hall of famers Loewe & Winmar who had issues leading into the match.

All in all a good match up for 3/4 but the best team won on the day. We missed Everitt & Vidovic, but no more than Adelaide missing 2x All Australians Ricutto & Modra IMO.

Harvey, Burke, Jones among our best.

Fair question, unfortunately I don’t have a sane response.

Yeah I’m kind of the same

I’ve been to 4 grand finals with the draw…
The closest thing to a replay I’ve seen of any of them is the highlights of the Aussie goal and the Goddard mark.

Cannot stand to be even see the thumbnails of replays on YouTube

Admire ppl that can get over it.

To me all of it is as raw as the day it happened

I've been to 5.
1 X draw, 4 X losses.

I have watched 2009 & 2010 draw a few times.
Haven't bothered with 2010 replay more than once as it was such a s*** game.

Can't say I know where to find a replay of 71 and just watched 97 for the first time I can remember.

I was directly behind the goals in 1997, in the last quarter watching Darren Jarman slot them right through the centre every time.

I can't watch that replay.

Stewie Loewe getting out marked from behind....no one ever did it before or since....just that game.

I was at 71, 97, 09, 10 the replay not the draw. I heard 65 and 66 on the radio. I cried when we lost 65. As a strange adjunct to 97 I happened to be at the gates at the MCG when the Adelaide team arrived. I don't think I have ever heard such jubilation and adulation in such loud volume before or after. Piercing.
