Just incredible to realize that ten years ago, we finished 9th, 12 wins with fantastic % of 123.

The ripening champs getting towards 30, mixed with a bunch of mediocre youth.

What a disaster waiting to happen when you factor in the shedding of talent Godard, Dal, Big Boy etc.

So it’s ten years. And where are we? What a decade as we struggled against the odds to resist the tide.

Any period can be arbitrary..but this ten year period seems to be particularly bookended.

It marked our official ‘rebuild’. evidently, based on the ladder, after ten years, we are slightly worse for it...

Potentially, about to get better??

Because unlike 2012 we are not about to say goodbye to a class of champions.

I wonder what we have learnt.

2002-2012 was remarkably successful for us.

Thank goodness we are not Essendon. 2012-2022 would be the nadir of their history.

2022 marks the rise of three young champs...perhaps a mini-renaissance is on the cards.

I think we have learnt plenty and perhaps forgotten plenty.

But even if we didn’t learn, that is especially relevant. It should be.


2002-2012 two very successful coaches in GT and Lyon. With 2012, we began a period of three coaches. Two clear failures and one yet to be determined.
Few seem to think that Watters was harshly judged, which given the following years is strange.

Yet we reached a mini summit with Richo mid 2016ish, but you get the feeling we could go no more.

Have a look at Geelong. For the last 15 years they've finished close to the top of the ladder. Why can't St Kilda plagerise their system. Just copy and paste!

We are emerging from the wasteland they led us to.

We fell away so badly in 2013, ya think Watters had lost the players? The oldies were already pros. The youngens like Newnes and Ross and Jack Stephen, I dunno.

But we have to lean into the Yorkers vibe and remember, despite recent disappointments, we are on the up compared too ‘13, ‘14, ‘15, ‘18 and ‘19. etc.

Geelong and Sydney unbelievable where as Collingwood? I suspect a major second year fall out as the honeymoon ends, the fixture gets harder, and the old legs of the old troops get a little tireder. Daicos bros are a worry tho.

The club hierarchy put a premium on stability but got bogged, and held on to Richo too long, and didn't put enough time or risk into younger player's development. All history now, but I will be interested to see what Bassat's review comes up with.

Why was Richo was reinstated? What process was used and what checks are in place to stop inertia just rolling forward.. as people need to justify their existence by ‘actioning’ things

So, when they give games to younger aged players, they have this experience to lean on.

Geelong are still playing players who played against us in the 2010 Grand Final.

Further, as a Country town, their sponsors and donors offer post football employment opportunities which arrangements are outside the Salary Cap (and always have - Ottens, anyone?)

Geelong (and certain other Clubs) operate outside the Rules and Regulations applied to the likes of St Kilda.

Across society, there are some who promote that they are too big to fail.

St Kilda just has to hang fat, and invest in maturing its List (with some help if this can be offered without damaging the integrity of the List we are cultivating).

St Kilda can not put on the park a side consisting of 16 players well past 200 games of experience.

Drafting is cream on the cake of those we are investing experience into.

So Coffield, Gresham, Steele, Clark, King, Billings, Marshall, Howard, Higgins, Battle, Paton, Sinclair, Crouch, Membrey, Wilkie and then Wanganeen-Milera, Windhager, Owens along with Heath, Adams and Peris.

And some luck with injuries, injuries which cut down Coffield, Gresham, Steele, Clark, Billings, Marshall, Howard and Higgins during the course of the 2022 Season.

I tend to agree, Jordy's abilities have got lost amongst his desire for the End of Season and whether he wants big $$$ with clauses or not.

Collingwood need another key forward (like us) and another key back (like us). They have McStay but they actually need Grundy more than they realise.

Salary cap space v Quality...their conundrum.
