Why are we looking to trade our quality player and keeping duds

Post: # 1977746Post Saints58 »

I am really worried that we will trade away some real quality if the talk is correct.
Players Like Clark, Gresham, long, bytel have been mentioned yet we keep billings, jones and highmore who is one of many 193 players on our list ross who I rate but at 29 we could get something for now we have some young guys coming through and what about butler and Higgins are they up for trade as well.

likely no one is interested in billings or jones.

That's the conundrum you have to give to get . We have to offer these sort of players because they have some trade value . Seb & probably Billings are worth more to us than we we would get as a trade IMO . Hard to say about Clak, Gresh, Long & Bytel all depends on what the perspective clubs are prepared give up to make it worth our while . Interesting times ahead

I like the thinking, I'm unsure about the players. Keeping or trading for players has us in this position. The key, correctly, is identifying profit or loss on a player. It appears we have been poor in our evaluation of players, particularly our own and specifically with the costly imports.

Well we aren't.

Fair call & I doubt the reward is worth the risk but there lays the problem . We have already delisted/retired Ryder,Hanners,Geary,Joyce & Kent but Ryder was the only one to have some impact the others only played a handful of games between them in 2022 & that will free up some cap room but nothing dramatic . So how do we improve our list if we don't change it ? Sure Clark, Gresh, Coffield , Jones ,Hill ,Long, Bytel ,Highmore & Billings etc might stay on the park & actually deliver why we drafted/recruited them for but maybe they won't & it will be ground hog day again in 2023.

Who is saying this? I don't think us forum people have much clout. The amount of trash talked here is huge.

What reward do you get for trading good players out?

Draft picks?

Are 2nd and 3rd round picks guaranteed to turn out to be good players?

Sounds like the Pelchen blueprint again

F*** that was successful

So you're hapoy with everyone on our list. Good to know, I'm sure we'll improve without identifying any weak links that aren't 20 or under?

There's about a 30% chance of landing a very good player with a second round pick and it's lower than that for a third rounder. It's probably 50/50 whether the player you choose will be as good as the player you just dumped

What I don't like about the players who are supposedly up for trade is they are all players we drafted and built up over the years they are the fabric of the club.
Brining in players from other clubs is essential but trading out your 22-26 year olds leaves a void and bringing in newer players are generally older and take a bit longer to gell.
Why are we so desperate for draft picks when we have said we are looking at free agents who do not cost us any picks.
With the flexibility of using next years picks and trading a older player like hill we would get something for maybe a 3 or 4 rounder and if we do that with jones or billings we get late picks that is better then loosing our quality players and have to start again in the draft.
In a few years do we do the same with Milera, windhager, Owens we will never get successful trading out players.

It's only been one week since our last game however, to me it feels like it's been ages.

I think we need to decide on a core group of players that we can build a successful team around. That doesn't mean just young players - but players who excel in their positions. Once that is decided, then we can see if the remaining players have any trade value to get players in that we need to build around the core (and that doesn't just mean old players looking for a pension).

As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”

Bottom line is we need to get better so we either have to improve from what we have or trade/recruit to try & find a better solution or stay in limbo which we have done for the last 2 years. No easy fix & it can come from within but a lot would have to change on & off the field for that to happen IMO

What about Byrnes, webster, Highmore would it be better to trade them I think we would get something for them and keep Clarke, bytel, Long, Gresham might not get as much for the 3 but GC could use experience players like them and have plenty of picks

Maybe but IMO don't think they would attract too much attention.

Saints TV reporting Saints are offering Bytel one year, Essendon offering longer.
Means what? We have a midfield recruit in mind; trying to set the scene for good compensation (don't say Hind), Jack has been difficult?
Anyway seems he will be going.

I thought we were interested a young ruck at Essendon he is 20 and 202 no games.
If we have to loose bytel through the kid in with the deal make them pay.

Dealing with Dodoro is like dealing with a spoilt child. He wants everything for nothing and expects a first round pick for an Essendon player who's ranked 38th on their playing list

If we rate Bytel then up the offer to him. The question is, do our coaches actually rate him?

Interesting they are seeking to trade players that have injury interrupted seasons. Eg gresh and clark

The trade value would be down at the moment.

Both have serious upside if they get them right.

Billings has zero currency.
Jones a dud on a monster contract

Maybe they should coffield name out there as well. Had no kicks for the season and all.....

Interesting take on the situation probably ad Bytel into the injury interrupted season.
We don't have enough really good players and if Clark and Gresham get fit they are dangerous they showed that this season when fit so strange they would look to trade them when we really need class players plus there age demographic is good.
Byrnes/webster could be 2 they could look to draft both played quiet a few games this year and I would rather trade them then the above players

What happened to every player agent under the sun is calling the club because everyone loves Ratts?

The club is irrelevant.
