Mercenaries at St.Kilda (a history)
With all this noise around the prospect of DeGoey coming to St.Kilda, I thought it might be an idea to cast our minds back on some of the better mercenaries to have played for the Saints over the decades?
The only two I can think of during my time who turned out to be invaluable players are Gehrig and Hamill.
Silvio Foschini was a favourite when I was a lad.
But golly, we rarely seem to get any luck with mercenaries, unlike clubs like Sydney and Geelong seem to

Steele, Membrey, Dylan Roberton, Ryder, Carlisle, Schneider, Dempster, Penny (till he did his knee), Gardiner, Powell, Matthew Young, Gram, Voss, Vidovic, Savage, Dean Anderson, Russel Morris, Rod Keogh, Callery, Rex Hunt, Peter McConville, Heath Black, Ken Sheldon, Max Crow and Tim Pekin was a ripper.
We have definitely lost more than we have gained though.

Paul Callery deserves a spot on that list as does Josh Bruce
I was also a fan of Robert Mace
And how could we forget Jason Heatley?

Jack Steele is the first B&F winner to start their career at another club since Paul Moorwood in '85.

Yeah, we only had him for a couple of years before he joined his brother Shane at the Filth.

Re: Mercenaries at St.Kilda (a history)
By mercenaries, I was referring to players who came over for big money. Carlisle is about the only player in the ones you’ve mentioned who got offered some filthy lucre! The rest of those are mainly fringe players from other clubs who ended up being a better fit with us.saintsRrising wrote: ↑Wed 24 Aug 2022 11:32amOur better players from other clubs probably have also included:Sainternist wrote: ↑Wed 24 Aug 2022 1:23am With all this noise around the prospect of DeGoey coming to St.Kilda, I thought it might be an idea to cast our minds back on some of the better mercenaries to have played for the Saints over the decades?

Certainly do. I remember him signalling a goal next the goal umpire at Moorabbin.

Yes.
Very hard to miss, as Rex was the flamboyant type in his 57 games at the Saints.

Rex Hunt would have been a lot more tolerable when he was seen on the footy field and not heard from the media lol

I f memory serves, I remember er home standing like an immobile whale , and bending back to snatch several marks in a Sandy jumper at the beach oval late 70s.saynta wrote: ↑Thu 25 Aug 2022 12:21pmYeah, me too. He certainly is a different beast.Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Thu 25 Aug 2022 12:19pmS

Those Sandy games were a trip, and had a great atmosphere.
