Why was Owens moved off Stewart

Post: # 1973280Post terry smith rules »

Up to half time Stewart had 4 Fantasy points (this included a negative second quarter)

Owens had been sensational putting pressure on him

Then after half time Owens was not on him and suddenly Stewart was back to what he does best

Seemed a very strange move to me

At some point … we had to actually kick a score to win. It looked like Owens was told to be more offensive than defensive.

Bit weird that an 18yo was charged with that responsibility but, the other forward were fairly pox and maybe that was Ratten’s ‘Paul Weston’ move. Who knows?

Why not an 18yo, windy has been brilliant the last few weeks shutting down players

Owens though was been offensive, kicked a goal and had 4 score involvements

I thought he was in our best 3 players to half time

Was it a case of Tom Stewart not playing well or was our game plan not to kick it in the General area of Tom Stewart, AFL fantasy points tell a very limited story and you can create any narrative you like. As is the case in most games, some players like Stewart have great endurance and can outplay the opposition in the back half of games as fatigue sets in and the game opens up.

Ratten explained it in the presser

He moved Owens into the middle in the last q to try and see how a different mix would work!

Apparently he did ok

Windhager had a job on Guthrie

He also said in his presser that our skill level and decsion making was poor .we were getting slaughtered on turn overs but hey lets keep sinclair our best ball user and decsion maker off hb instead of putting him on the ball.lol the guy cant coach .if everyone else watching the game can see that geelong were just sweating on us giving the ball back.then why not try and change things from the coaches box instead of sitting on your hands and hoping things will change brett????

Not that you expect to turn the ball over but when we do our general round the ground set up is atrocious .... free opposition players everywhere ..... the opposition far too easily are able to transition the ball to their forwardline then our poor backs are under a hard pump

When you turn the ball over, the opposition will have at least one loose man to use. There are only two ways to get it back - rely on a skill error from your opponent or have enough pace to close the gaps. Geelong didn't often do the first, and we can't do the second.

Turn overs were 45-48

They scored 7 goals from turn over

We scored 2

Come on! Ratts also swung the swingmen around - Battle to the forward line and Sharman to the back line.

They just showed footage of Swans going man on man something that it seems we are extremely adverse to

Everything we do is haphazard and relies on a bit of luck which is fine but only if you have a solid gameplan in place to negate the opposition on a turnover or at least slow them down .... that could placement of players / structure of players around the ground .... holding players in the centre or forwards defence side of their opponent and prepared to chase to stop overlap run

Not sure what sort of gameplan is leaving no one in the forward 50 either to kick to (but that's for another discussion)

It's no use blaming players skill levels or turnovers .... turnovers happen every game ..... fkn coach for them to happen ..... there needs to be balance between attacking intent with a defensive mindset ...... aggressively defensive & defensively aggressive

Too often too many of our players get sucked into the contest and if it doesn't fall our way we are left chasing tail or just scratching our arses hoping the backline will hold up

It is seriously like we don't have a brain or at least there is no synergy and understanding between the playing group ..... the coaches need to set that right ... if they can't then we need others who can

100% a coaching thing too many players sucked into the contest. Watch melb play always have one at the contest 2 sitting on the outside to receive.all the good sides set up that way.and hold their structure in their own f50 ,so they dont have to stop go sideways and wait for their team mates to get fwd to provide an option and give the opposition time to get back and set up their defence.we just play a dumb style of footy.
