Gresham is NOT a midfielder
I think most of us can agree on this:
By trying to shoehorn him into the midfield, St.Kilda has effectively turned Jade Gresham into an injury prone player. It just seems abundantly clear that his body isn’t durable enough to be in the engine room full-time.
FFS, he is - and always was - a small forward!! We all knew this from the time he played his first game for the club!!
So, where to now for his career?

At this point his career is heading towards mediocrity.

Re: Gresham is NOT a midfielder
Not easy coming back from an achilles injury and I think he displayed some very good form in patches this year.
He put in a good preseason last year and was one of the reasons we were travelling so well early in 2022
He has the ability and I believe also the drive and ambition to get better as a footballer and he just needs some luck and another big preseason.

Re: Gresham is NOT a midfielder
Started the year very well. The fact that he's having a PCL reconstruction tells me he's been struggling physically for a while. From training reports, he's been on light duties for a while now..
In my view he is a midfielder.
He's been unfortunate to have had so many serious injuries in the past three seasons. When fit, he's a very creative and dynamic footballer.

Re: Gresham is NOT a midfielder
Patches of form isn’t good enough. He has incredible natural ability, which has been displayed for the most part in the forward line. Before he did an Achilles, he did a back injury. I can only assume that his body isn’t cut out for the midfield.

Stop assuming. Every one gets injured at some stage…even the Man o SteeleSainternist wrote: ↑Thu 28 Jul 2022 7:52pm Before he did an Achilles, he did a back injury. I can only assume that his body isn’t cut out for the midfield.
I think he’s got the goods to play midfield and obviously he’s been hampered by injury in the last few weeks…plus….oh yeah…. you have very bad timing!! Not sure if you were aware of the news of his impending surgery before you started this thread
Gresh kicked 4 goals and starred against Hawthorn earlier this year in our biggest win in 2022. Let’s see if the boys can get a win against the Hawks without him
He was just building his game in the last few years and his numbers were serviceable versus our regular established mids. I wont’t compare his 2021 averages because he only managed 3 games (but if he continued at that same level he would’ve finished top 3 in the best and fairest). The below is a comparison with one of our established regular mids for the current year

Re: Gresham is NOT a midfielder
Why ? He has been plagued with injury in the last few years & after a promising start to 2022 he has been ordinary when we really needed him to deliver . It may be the case that he was carrying an injury but why would you think supporters would not question his performance ?

Re: Gresham is NOT a midfielder
He's been unlucky with injury and fallen victim to what I see as our biggest problem - we just can't seem to develop our players. They come in pretty good, interesting, exciting, whatevs, showing a bit of something... But they don't get better. I can only point to Sinclair and DMac as genuine improvers and, forgive me, but they probably received less attention from the club because they arrived unheralded and perhaps with less natural ability than many others who have only gone backwards.

Re: Gresham is NOT a midfielder
Where does he play in a team with a strong midfield?
Small forward with an occasional run in the middle - a little bit like Cyril did , and similar to Rankine at the GC now.

Re: Gresham is NOT a midfielder
Sure, everyone gets injured at some point in their career, but Gresham has now become injury prone in the space of three years. During that time, he has become a full-time midfielder. Come on! This is no coincidence. He simply doesn’t have the durability to play as a full-time midfielder. Sure, we can persist and run the guy’s career into ground. And the Hawthorn game you speak of was early in the season. About a dozen games later, his body is cooked. Gee, I wonder why?Scollop wrote: ↑Thu 28 Jul 2022 8:34pmStop assuming.
