Channel 31 LOcal Footy Show this morning

Post: # 1969705Post samuraisaint »

Great show btw, but they focused on Boort FC this morning. Doing a great job by all accounts, town of less than a thousand yet has a full footy team across year levels and also netball and field hockey teams as well.

One of the officials at the club spoke about Big Carl coaching the club in 2002 and he said it was very interesting.

Interested in details. Trev from the Bush - are you from up central Goldfields way?

I grew up in country Victoria not that far from Boort (around 80 kms ) & been through it many times but have never stayed there . I wouldn't call it central Goldfields but happy to answer a few questions . Cheers

I have been known to frequent the Central Goldfields with my detector, my great-grandparents settled in the area in the 1850's but failed to find their fortune. The latter is a tradition I maintain to this day.

A mate grew lucerne at Boort and it is home to Victoria's oldest trotting club. The footy club wears black and white jumpers. Why on earth would you go near the place?

The Shadow did coach the club in 2002 as stated. Country footy legends Tony Southcombe and Ron Best both played stints with the club, the North Central League was always a good standard considering the size of the population. Where I live the local club really struggles with a population of around 250 so Boort certainly punches above its weight to remain viable and successful.

It's 40 years next month since Barry Breen became the first St Kilda player to play 300 senior games, a much rarer achievement than today's professional game.

The day before the game the Sun News Pictorial featured an interview between Breen and Lou Richards. A question was posed along the lines of "300 games is a remarkable achievement, especially when you have played most of them as a centre-half forward. It's one of the toughest positions to play, how do you explain your longevity in the game?"

Breen answered "Probably because every time when I was in a vulnerable position with my head over the ball I could see the giant shadow of Carl Ditterich behind me taking care of our opponents."

I doubt I'll ever see the second coming but I live in hope after 60 seasons the Saints will see a second coming of Carl Ditterich. We need a big athletic, skilled enforcer if we are to get our second flag. Rowan Marshall with a sneer, not a smile perhaps.
