No doubt the performances over the last 2 weeks have rankled both inside the Club and among supporters.

This extends to the matches post the Bye, altho there were contributing factors to the loss in Brisbane.

The recent history at St Kilda is what it is.

In the first instance, there was comment as to the lack of player development resources upon someone arriving at the Club.

As a consequence, those resources were enhanced (in a difficult market due to "soft cap" cut backs) and the younger contingent were challenged to push aside and past the older contingent including to take on new responsibilities (aka Steele as but one example Then Coffield being told to use his legs to cross lines as another example)

In the second instance, there was the assessment that the Club had no "middle tier" of players, with experience and with mature bodies.

As a consequence, and as an interim move, the State Leagues were gone to and players recruited.

The need to Draft and trade was a conclusion, to address the deficiencies across the List.

It is a view that what has been achieved heading into 2022 is the first step to being consistently competitive (which is the prerequisite to the ultimate success) - and further enhancements to the List and the development of the List will see the Club as a premiership contender in 2 years time.

The deficiencies remain obvious.

The Club has one (1) key defender over 193cm.

The Club has one (1) key forward over 193cm.

The Club has an ageing Ruckman, assisting Marshall and ahead of the development of Heath (or recruiting).

And, in terms of putting 100 games into Drafted players, the injuries to the likes of Marshall, Coffield, Clark, Paton et al are noted.

Luck plays its part (look at McCartin).

There is not much you can do about an absence of luck.

But what you can do is adhere to the program and continue to put the building blocks in place.

Quite frankly, the only mature, class player of size St Kilda has who has the aggression which comes with that physical presence is Ryder.

And that comment considers Battle, who plays above his size in this side.

We need to be selective with identifying out of Contract players, always seeking to bring in class players and particularly class KPP players and a Ruckman given the obvious deficiencies on the List.

And we need to continue to go to the Draft, which in recent years has given Clark, Coffield and Paton - and then Wanganeen-Milera, Owen and Windhagen and those players gaining the experience which comes across 100 games of AFL football.

Mind you the AFL is a competition - so all Clubs have their agendas to take them to a Premiership (plus some).

That said, you can not go backwards.

You can only go forward.

And it is my view that the Club is in good hands to go forward.

So you back them in.

And you look for the green shoots.

So our younger contingent showing something and putting pressure on the older contingent, no matter the possession numbers of the older contingent (because it is about ball movement to advantage and scoring, not just possession statistics).

Someone like Stephen coming into the Sydney side with the experience around him is just that little bit different to Wanganeen- Milera and Windhagen coming into the St Kilda side we had on the park at the SCG)

Key positions ... Forward, Back, Ruck are absolute priorities but problem is young big guys take time and if you go the mature age route then either it's gunna cost a lot of cap space and picks or if you go the moneyball route then the quality that is so desperately required invariably falls short

We also need at least 2 more quality Mids and again to get immediate quality it's likely gunna cost you cap space and picks ..... of course there is FA pathway but the cupboard can be quite bare ..... and lastly the freak 2nd rounder trade for a Steele gem which happens once in an indigo moon
