Paton for Geary
Paton need a spell in the VFL. Needs time to work on cleaning up his disposal. Making too many errors. Against North he dropped marks he should have taken and missed targets by foot.
Time to bring Geary back as the lockdown defender. Tough, experienced, leader.
Paton will be around for a long time no doubt, but we are chasing top 4 and a premiership and need to think about the here and now. He will have a spell and come back stronger through the adversity.
Right now, Geary is a better option.

Re: Paton for Geary
Thought Paton's spot may come under pressure at 3/4 time of the Adelaide game, but he had an excellent last quarter and was very good against North.
Our back six is solid as a rock currently, no need to change it.

Not sure what game you were watching but I thought Paton was good against the Roos. 9 marks, 15 touches @ 80 percent dis eff is pretty solid. With 46 games under his belt, Paton is the future and will keep improving. As good as he has been throughout his career, Geary is only getting a game if injuries strike.

Re: Paton for Geary
Agreed…we’re going very well in the back half having had the same group of defenders every week.
There’s a nice balance & synergy amongst our back 7 that doesn’t need tinkering with.

Agree. Not broken, don’t fix.
Clark, when he returns, should come back in an on-ball role.

No.
Geary is yesterdays news, and there are many ahead of him if we're selecting on form also.

Not sure how the 80% DE was arrived at

Re: Paton for Geary
Yeah that could be tidied up and perhaps left to the blokes who's role it is to send inside 50 however it is good to see that Pato is getting himself into positions where he is sending it i50 on numerous occasions. FWIW, I don't recall any of our forwards ever being hit on the tit by Geary and I don't see that changing anytime soon.terry smith rules wrote: ↑Thu 02 Jun 2022 1:51pmYou left out the 4 inside 50s that were sprayed every which wayoutside66 wrote: ↑Thu 02 Jun 2022 12:56pm Not sure what game you were watching but I thought Paton was good against the Roos. 9 marks, 15 touches @ 80 percent dis eff is pretty solid. So you want to replace a ball butcher with a different ball butcher?

Re: Paton for Geary
Yeh pretty much
But with Geary you get courage, leadership, experience, a strong voice down back.
Plus it also gives Paton a kick in the backside like Billings got.

Re: Paton for Geary
If you are hell bent on replacing Paton then surely Connolly deserves his chance .... great kick, shown promise and 13 years younger than Geary.
Doesn't seem like we have a problem with leadership and experience down back or strong voices currently

Re: Paton for Geary
Watching Geary at Sandy, and really, I don't see him playing seniors again unless we have massive injury outs. Paton is quite good and I think some of those decision-making issues moving up the ground will be ironed out by Ratts.

Re: Paton for Geary
Our back 6 are enjoying the cohension and stability of playing with the same players each week. Paton has had his shaky moments but he is our future lock down small defender and I think the bye week came at the right time. He will come back refreshed and should continue on IMO.

Re: Paton for Geary
Several of you appear to be suggesting that Geary’s form and Sandringham isn’t great.
That clearly isn’t the club’s view of how he’s going: check the official website.
I’m not proposing he should be brought back to the AFL team, but I wouldn’t bet against it either.
He could replace either of Paton or Sharman. He’s usually good for a goal, sometimes more, so he’d be useful up forward.
I’d prefer Butler, but Jarryn could be guaranteed to give it 100%.

I think he could well go out, but for Clark rather than Geary.

Sense
Geary finished - had a good run
And whoever said Connolly needs to be in the discussion ahead of Geary is bang on
This side is not winning flag this year
It’s about next 2-3
I hope Connolly pushes out a Webster permanently by then

Re: Paton for Geary
Coffield will push Webster out, if and when he comes back he finds form? Connolly has a way to go IMO, he has trimmed down noticeably and as a result has lost some physicality.Teflon wrote: ↑Thu 02 Jun 2022 7:06pmHallelujah!meher baba wrote: ↑Thu 02 Jun 2022 6:50pmI think he could well go out, but for Clark rather than Geary.

Re: Paton for Geary
The backline is structured around Sinclair and Howard slipping off their man and providing stability to a zone.
Paton is one of the few who transition quickly and effectively from defensive work, to straightening up zone structures to assist and rebounding from the outside in assistance. This why he is valuable.and one of the first picked. Geary was a gun at it. Connolly has a way to go.
Patonnhas found himself up the ground a fair bit too in Steele's absence.
He takes solid marks, has a quick 20m, is a good contested player and provides clean outs under pressure. He isn't Sinclair, Hill or NWM by foot, but he ain't alone there.
11 games in from a serious 12 months injury. I'd let him.know he can still improve but I'd keep playing him. He has been very good more often than not over the last 30 of his first 47 games. Missed in 2 drafts and then rookied, you can't knock his work rate or effort.

Re: Paton for Geary
So we are 8-3 with the statistically 3rd best ranked defence in the competition, and you want to replace a 22 YO defender with a 34 YO at the end of his career. Thank the all mighty you are not on the clubs selection committee.bakes wrote: ↑Thu 02 Jun 2022 12:26pm Paton need a spell in the VFL. Needs time to work on cleaning up his disposal. Re: Paton for Geary
Not sure
1) he was a rookie? Wasn’t he pick 46 in the National Draft??
2) He was overlooked in 2 Drafts - he missed a draft, got permission to play as a 19yo at Murray, the next season - made the TAC team of the year and was Drafted by StK
Also
Don’t think Dougal Howard is in the side to play off his man, he takes the opposition #1 key forward every week?

Re: Paton for Geary
You are correct. Marshall was the one missed in 2 drafts. Long missed one or 2. But at the time we were looking at guys who needed a second and third chance. Wilkie was missed in 3 I think. My main point was, you can't knock Paton's work rate or effort and he came from the VFL after being over looked.B.M wrote: ↑Thu 02 Jun 2022 9:30pm Not sure

Depending on the opponent, Dougal is always leaving his man and squaring up numbers or double teaming.
You are one who complains about it but it happens too often not to be planned.
Wilkie Battle and Paton are often swapping opponents and backing out of trouble and linking. I've got no doubt, that its this sort of strategy and synergy which has seen our defence rate highly recently and helped us stop the floggings and having key forwards dominate us. We take risks, like Howard attacking as often as he defends.

Re: Paton for Geary
I don’t care about where they come from, where they were drafted, why they aren’t playing as well as they can
I only give a stuff about current performance
His last game was poor, his disposal was putrid and it stuck out like dogs balls
